Hello, I am trying to help a friend in Cleveland, locate a free or inexpensive place to shoot his first pistol. I am a Ohio native, but have been away for 6 years now and really only shot occasionally at ranges before I left due to the high price of range fees.

Does anybody know of a gun club, public range or land where he could get some practice on a short budget? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

NE Ohio

Being from the region, I'm more familiar with the Akron area than Cleveland, but there are a few websites that list ranges in the area. A good one I frequent is Riverside Range in Cuyahoga Falls (about a 40 minute drive south from Cleveland).

DNR range fee

I wanted to add that the $24.00 a year gives you access to ALL DNR ranges in Ohio.

I get this each year just to have and to support the DNR ranges that do exist. I shoot at the Delaware Wild Life Range north of Columbus and the Deercreek Range south of Columbus. The range that you go to first after your purchase of the $24.00 permit gets the credit for the money you spent on the permit.

You have to bring your own targets, stands, hearing protection, eye protection, guns, and Ammo as all they usually provide is a backstop and a shooting area with either picnic type shooting tables or cement shooting tables.

It is also up to you to provide a safe shooting environment. There is usually a range officer or two but they are there mostly to intervene if something really bad happens. Target changes require good communications and coordination with the other shooters present.

Stay safe!

dunno about a DNR type thing but theres a shooting club in carrollton thats like 160 a year. I'm not a member yet but the monthly meeting is tomorrow so I plan on going. PM me if you'd like some more info.

Grand River is where I do most of my shooting nowadays. The facility is well kept. 25 yd : pistol and rimfire only, 50 yd, and 100 yd. 2-3 ODNR officers on site. Notorious for being a little windy most of the time. For low wind conditions, come in when they open at 9:00 am (low wind last for about 1-2 hours), wind dies down at about 3:30/4:00 pm also but the range closes at 5:00 (clean-up starts at ~4:40). I've never done this before but I've heard that the range is almost always nearly empty on weekdays (Tu-Fr). It gets packed just before and right after the start of deer hunting season.

Range is closed Jan and Feb.

Atwell's in Painsville has an indoor pistol/shotgun range. Hours vary by season mostly open in the evening, might want to call them for details. Fees aren't bad, you can use your own ammo, you can keep your brass and targets but they also have them available. It is open to the public and they are great guys and gals.

Atwell's Shooting Range

Another good place ask is Ohioans for concealed carry

Rrflyer,

If you are talking about the Dallas Pistol Club, I know where they are but their fees are bit steep for my budget.

By the way, the range at Bass Pro Shop is only $8/hr and they usually let you stay longer for the same price if there are no people waiting.

Thanks.

Grand River Hours and Dates.

I regularly shoot at the Grand River range, it's a steal for me. 15 min. from home and inexpensive.

They are CLOSED Jan and Feb. Too cold most of the time, not worth posting two rangers there for nobody shooting most of the time.

Also Closed Mon and Tues. They are a State asset and make this available to local police depts. these two days.

OPEN Wed through Sun, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.. Shooting stops at 4:45p.m. to police brass, trash, etc.

There are three ranges here, a 25yd, 50yd and 100yd. Aprox thirty stall on each range, aprox half covered. All have benches. Port-o-potty only, no vending machines, no plumbing, no nothing. Strictly BYO everything. Not bad, it keeps it cheap. Eating, drinking and smoking are allowed on the line.

They provide a target stand with cardboard. You provide your own target to affix to it.

For $24, I can't beat it.

I shoot at Grand River also.
I am always impressed with how well it is kept up.

We have a few indoor ranges in West Palm, but rather costly because you can only fire their ammo. My last trip with my daughter to the indoor range for one hour for two was just over a $200 bucks to shoot 9MM and 40 cal. I seldom buy anything from the local shops, its cheaper in the long run to buy from the on line dealers.

In the past, before the Castle Law and CC was approved here in Florida, the thugs from the hood use to visit the middle class neighborhoods to do their shooting. Now that we are armed you seldom see an outsider in the neighborhood. I guess the thugs found a better place to do their shooting.

Since my last post in 02/08, I did eventually get a chance to shoot on a Friday to practice up for the CMP Rimfire Sporter match last year at Grand River. Yes, it was barren. I think there was only two or three other shooters that day.

Haven't been around there for quite a while but there used to be a reasonable cost commercial range in Sheffield Township, past Avon....
