Places to shoot N. Illinois?

IN License required for drive to range?

I stand corrected. Effective July 1, 2011 - one can transport a handgun in the form you described w/o a conceal permit. Thank gawd for progress. Just goes to show that these laws are changing all the time.

I like Indiana more and more every day. If I ever I get fed up with all the Illinois hassles (taxes, gun laws, public schools, etc...) I'll probably jump the border to the east.

I wonder how long I would have to live in Indiana before I could call myself a Hoosier?

Can you shoot in Indiana on an Illinois FOID card?

Good question. In the past, one would have a hard time transporting handguns without a CCW permit, but with the new law it looks to be ok to transport w/o a CCW permit. No idea how it would apply to non-residents. I am not a lawyer so maybe someone else can interject.

hey everyone i live in lansing IL under a mile from IN. when i go shooting i go to willow slough(sp?) last year they wouldnt let anyone from IL shoot pistol there, just long guns because they said we couldnt legally transport pistols to the range but if what Onward says is true that should not be the case anymore.
@dkals i shoot in indiana everytime i go to the range and was never once asked to see my FOID the only time ive ever had to show my FOID in IN was to buy ammo or handle a firearm.

Worst comes to it, Missouri is IL shooter friendly, just don't forget your FOID card.
Granted, that does almost nothing for you Northern IL folks...but there are some less-expensive hotels near the good ranges here. :)

In Elmwood Park, Gun Works, 7229 Grand Ave
Nice place, just $10 unlimited time, and you don't have to pay for anything else if you have ammo and target, little hot on summer, but how many ranges has a AC? anyway.
Went already twice and like it.

Last I heard they didn't allow reloads though ... pretty sure no rilfe other than perhaps a 22.
/Bryan

I don't have a rifle, so cannot tell you, but I shoot .22LR, 9mm and 45, nobody checked what ammo I using, just asked if I needed at check in.

Yes, Bryan you were right, called them and asked about rifle shooting, no rifles allowed...
And I just got me a new M10x762 Romanian and have no idea were to take it for a test...

Where in Northern Illinois are you, its big.

Near Kankakee you have the Illinois State Rifle Association Range. Family membership is
~$300 a year, individual is a little cheaper.

If you want to meet up I would be willing to bring you in as a guest so you can see the
place. It is a very nice range.

BTW,

50 yd pistol range (rimfire rifles allowed)
100 yd rifle range
100 meter rifle range
200/300 yd rifle range (with pits)
Rifle and pistol ranges are outdoor and covered.
Shotgun range
Archery range
Bathrooms and grills for cooking if you wanna make a day of it.

Membership is annual, NRA and ISRA membership is required, no daily fees or access.

Fran's on 17 is a good Bar & Grill nearby, and is very shooter friendly.

Find out that Bass Shop Pro in Gurnee Mills allowed shooting 7.62x39 AK47 style rifles, but you need to buy only soft point American made ammo.
Will check that place out, but heard very strange rules there applied.

I have shot there. Lead tipped rifle rounds and no rapid fire. Not really that peculiar for commercial ranges.

They put trigger locks on my guns at the front door that the guy at the range unlocked and then went thru the same process in reverse to get out.

Only one point is rifle usable. Basically a long metal tube.

Place to shoot in IL

Well... at least some places allowed to shoot, just never been in that place before

I go to illinois gunworks frequently. It's $10 for the all-you-can-shoot buffet. (hot) range goes out to 20 yards and has about ten stalls. They have 15-20 rental guns depending on what's clean($8), and have a modest selection of FS service style handguns and a small used case. they will special order anything for you. Prices are average. Classes, including CFP are available. The people are really friendly. Range gets fairly crowded on weekends and is hot in the summer and freezing in the winter. Added bonus is that it is walking distance :neener:

Edit: The range rules state "no high powered rifles" which they defined to me as no bottleneck cartridges.
