Is anyone here familiar with the Freemont Nebraska/Northern Omaha area?

I'm curious about local ranges, and nearby IDPA or 3 gun matches. Also, any suggestions on neighborhoods to avoid or look for while trying to find a rental property?

#1-Freemount is good ,I beleave thear are a couple nice ranges in the area
#2-STAY THE HELL OUT OF NORTH OMAHA HEAVY CRIME ZONE.
I know this because I was born and raised in Omaha, got smart in 1979 and moved to AZ
Also Omaha has some screwed up gun reges.
Good luck with your move.

you might check the Cylinder & Slide website as they are in Fremont and see if they mention any things about matches or give them a call.

STAY THE HELL OUT OF NORTH OMAHA HEAVY CRIME ZONE.

VERY true. Stay away from N.O. But north OF Omaha outside the city limits several miles is pretty.

The Bullet Hole is the only range I'm aware of in Omaha, the only one I've been to, anyway. Probably not the only one, though.

It's a well patronized place, and they now have staff that's helpful and courteous (didn't always). The only thing about ranges like this is that your targets "dance" around on the wire pulley system for awhile after you've sent them down range. Otherwise, I like the Bullet Hole. It's in SW Omaha, not far from Cabelas.

As I said, there may be other ranges in the area, I'm just not aware of them.

What kind of ranges are you looking for? Indoor? Outdoor? Check out the Eastern Nebraska Gun Club (ENGC) in Louisville, NE. (located south of Omaha). There are a couple in the Fremont, Elkhorn area (though Elkhorn is being swallowed by Omaha as it grows). The largest outdoor range in that vicinity has a 300yd range I believe, while the ENGC has up to a 600yd range.

You want to live in west omaha. West of I-680. Or in the dundee neighborhood if you're more partial to mid town. Avoid north omaha, really anything north of dodge near downtown or close to creighton.

^ I lived in Omaha for 5 years and the last place I would want to live is west Omaha. It is full of chain resturants, subdivisions, and is EXTREMELY homogenous. Midtown, Dundee, and Downtown are pretty good as far as Nebraska standards go. Benson is also quirky and pretty nice.

You will probably want to stay out of the smaller towns around Omaha, you will lenghten your commute, and find the amenities to be pretty spartan.

Actually, North O is ok to go through and to during the daytime. Night time is a different matter--but I still wouldn;t let it stop me if I had somewhere to go there.

98% of it black on black, gang related crime.

Move to Sarpy county to avoid some taxes and BS Omaha gun regs.

Running gun battle between two vehicles in the eastern portion of North Omaha, last night.

Fair info has been provided, so far. ENGC is your best bet. Until recently, I was a member of the Elkhorn Valley Rifle Club, which has a range in Arlington, twenty miles west of Omaha. A private club with a long list of prospective members. A beautiful facility, nevertheless.

I'd absolutely consider residence in any of the nearby communities, as well as west Omaha. Good places, with common sense Middle West standards. Flags flown on holidays, doors held for others, etc.

I have lived in Omaha since the fall of 1974. Most of the shootings are gang members targeting each other. Strangers just driving through are rarely bothered. The mantra about not doing stupid things with stupid people in stupid places at a stupid time of day holds true. A few years ago, a respected young business woman was murdered in her car late one evening. She had picked the wrong drug dealer.

The Bloods and Crips moved into North Omaha about 25 years ago. Instead of jumping on them immediately, the city's leaders spent the next few years denying that there was a gang problem. South Omaha has traditionally been the first home for immigrants. Fifty years ago, they came from central Europe. Now they come from Latin America. Their gangs have come, too. There are about 3,000 gang members and associates in Omaha.

North Omaha and South Omaha are not good places to live. It's too simlistic to define either area by a set of bordering streets. Another post mentioned Dundee and Benson both of which lie in North Omaha. Dundee contains older mansions I can't afford. It also has Brownell-Talbot, an exclusive private school for rich people's kids. Benson still has problems. Downtown, which used to be bad, has been refurbished. Little attention has been paid to South Omaha. A gross oversimplification, which excludes many good neighborhoods, would be to stay west of 72nd Street.

The various bedroom suburbs that are part of metropolitan Omaha are good places. If you are willing to drive farther, there are separate towns like Blair, Plattsmouth, Springfield and Ashland. You can also live on the east side of the Missouri River in Iowa. Just avoid the seedier parts of Council Bluffs.

As mentioned, the City of Omaha is fairly anti-gun. It helps to get a concealed carry permit since state law exempts permit holders from Omaha's silliness. One thing to remember is that, in Nebraska, it is illegal to carry inside a facility posted with a No Guns sign. There is no standard format for the sign. In Iowa, the worst they can do is order you to leave and cite you for trespassing if you refuse.

The Douglas County prosecutor's office has always been staunchly in favor of self defense. They do not prosecute victims who fight back. Neither have I heard of lawsuits by the bad guys or their surviving relatives.

Some knowledgeable info on Omaha in the posts above. I grew up there, but it was a different place then, as is the case with most other American cities it's size.

The farther west the safer, but like another poster said, the newer parts of town are missing some of the interesting aspects of Omaha life.

It's kinda sad, but I'm glad I don't live there anymore. If I had to live in the Omaha area, I'd opt for Ft. Calhoun or Blair or Bennington. Best wishes.

I'd have to agree to stay away from the north side. Last year while on the way home from a dirtbiking trip in Colorado I toasted my truck at about 1am in north Omaha and had to coast into a bad part of town. I had one of my pistols with me but I was still a bit worried as it was a lot "rougher" of an area than anywhere here in MN. Good luck though, the better part of town is pretty nice.
