I saw on MSNBC and the story fails to mention it was local citizen's shooting back. That gave the police the time to move in, and finally killing Whitman. Or that a citizen accompanied the police to the top of the tower. I was young, but I remember the police were grateful for the help.

AUSTIN, Texas (KXAN) -- Charles Joseph Whitman was a student at the University of Texas at Austin who killed 14 people and wounded 31 others when he went on a shooting rampage from the observation deck 42 years ago.

Whitman opened fire from the university's 32-story administrative building's observation deck August 1, 1966. He did this shortly after murdering his wife and mother.

He was eventually shot and killed by Austin police.

An autopsy requested in Whitman's suicide note revealed that he had a Glioblastoma brain tumor and has led to speculation that the tumor was responsible for his rampage.
