Friend detained at Canadian border

My friends had trouble bringing in a shotgun last this month and finally left it in the states. When we cross our equipment we get more trouble from US customs than the Canuks. YMMV.

Oops, I fly to Canada tomorrow really I love you guys and syrup and the metric system.

Is it harder to bring a gun (let's say a Remington 700) from Canada into the US or is it harder to bring a Remington 700 rifle from the US into Canada?

What about something like an AR-15 rifle?

You could be searched for illegal guns when you enter into Canada (especially in Ontario or Quebec) because their is a HUGE handgun smuggling problem into those provinces. Something like 90% of all the handguns used in crimes in Canada are traced back to the US.

Could that 90% figure be right, of course it could,

Smith & Wesson = made in the USA
Colt= Made in the USA
Ruger = Made in the USA
Kimber
Springfield

etc

So what handguns are made in Canada ??????:banghead:

And here is another statistic

99% of the Crimes comitted in Canada ARE comitted by CANADIANS

This is why I DO NOT have any pro-gun stickers on my vehicle.

The ONLY stickers on my vehicle are the pro-police stickers I have.

I do not want to attract attention of some anti-gun cop/border patrol.

I agree 100% America is turning into a police state under the Republicans. I might move to Canada if the current trend keeps up in this country.

Hell, you're from Massachusetts, don't you already live in a police state under Democrats? :neener:

Sure, no argument there. Alot of It is political, there is probably more pressure put on searching for illegal guns at border crossings in Provinces like Ontario because in the eyes of very Liberal Toronto all the "Big Bad Guns" are "flooding" across the border from the "Bad Americans". Just like I would imagine in Washington State the border guards are putting special emphasis on searching for the "EVIL" BC marijuana that is "flooding" across the border from the "Bad, Pot Smoking, Hippy Loving" British Columbians.

Para Ordnance
Despite the fact that they are made in Canada I doubt they are a real common crime gun there or anywhere. S&W revolvers are real popular in the crime statistics due to their being so many of them made.

As far as my source for 99% percent of crimes in Canada being committed by Canadians goes.......... I could be wrong maybe its only 98%

Please read up on current politics. We have had Republican governors for the last 14 years. They are more pro big goverment in this state than many of the Dems in the state legislature. If anything it is the Republicans and the moderate Dems that are a threat to our freedoms in this state.

My mistake. Perhaps "liberal" would have been more accurate? Don't know much about Mass. state politics, but have always gotten the impression that the NE part of the US is much more liberal than much of the rest of the country, Republicans included. Your state gun laws sure aren't much for protecting a citizens freedom. Were they passed by mostly Republicans, Democrats, or what?

On a national level, I don't see how the Dems are any better protecting our freedoms. They just like to screw with us in different areas.

I do wish you all would stop re-electing that antique gasbag Ted Kennedy.

One more thing I'm getting way too old for that nonsence.

All the gun control laws since the early 1990s where passed by the Republican governors. Of course they where passed by the Democrats in the senate and house. The large cities in Mass control the politics in the state. Many of the Dem legislators from rural areas in the state are very pro gun. Yes, most of New England is politicaly and socialy liberal, but that does not mean strict gun laws. Look at Vermont, Maine and NH which are Democrat controlled states with little to no gun laws. Vermont is a very progressive state, with many die hard socialist. It with Alaska is ranked as the state with the best (least) guns laws. Though NH is more polticaly mixed, it also ranks with the best. I believe strict gun laws has more to do with the population base. More rural more pro gun. A state with more population that live in urban areas more anti-gun.

Smuggled Guns?

Check out the US-Canadian border around Plattsburg and Cornwall. There, the Akwasasne Reserve is like Lebanon waiting to happen.

The border is wide open, because the tribe straddles the international border. Drugs, guns, cigarettes, everything else cross back and forth with no interference. The area is an armed camp. So far, no government, US or Canadian, federal, state, provincial, local, has the stomach to take the place apart. It would be too politically incorrect--and the UN might not like it.

Akwasasne run like a separate country--its own law "enforcement", for example.

If I remember correctly, several years ago, when the RCMP ran patrol boats at night on the St. Lawrence, they were fired upon regularly.

Apparently, the inhabitants of Akwasasne have quite an assortment of military light weapons.

Probably, this is the place from which the homies in Toronto get their blasters.

Maybe Mayor Bloomberg should get his ass up to Akwasasne and see what happens to it.

Actually, excellent basic police work, not a handgun ban, has really cut the black-on-black shootings in Toronto this summer. But don't expect the Liberal provincial gov or the socialist Toronto gov or the liberal press to say anything about this.

Actually, guys, there are some things in Canada that are good. Vancouver metro's like LA/SF North, but once you get out into rural BC, Alberta and Saskatchewan it's some very nice places and people--last time I was up there, quite a few years ago, I was having a midnight snack in the hotel restaurant in Edmonton. Since the restaurant was dead, only me, her [EDIT: the waitress] and the kitchen crew, we had a little chat which drifted to global politics, and it sounded from what she said that Alberta was basically Montana moved north and that they were getting seriously cheesed at Ottawa not getting it on common-sense issues (guns was one example she cited); it sounds like they're the same as us where mostly the rural folks "get it" and the urbanites don't on practical matters.

And I did have to deal with some issues as a college student, even though I was traveling with a minivan full of relatives. "Are you all GAINFULLY employed?" Lucky I was working for the college newspaper at that time...

Well, I've lived most of my life relatively near the Canadian border, and I've probably crossed over and back 250 times or more. and I've never been stopped for a search, even in my "hippie" days when I had shoulder length hair, etc. I go up to Niagara Falls (CN side) or Toronto for vacations, and I've had various business related trips as well. I've never felt any anti-American sentiment, and as a whole, all the people I've ever dealt with there were good people.

Oh Canada!!

Two years ago my wife and I entered Canada from the State of Washington. We were driving a rental car (no stickers). The Canadian border folks conficated from my wife (5 ft 2 in) a small pepper spray our dauighter gave her AFTER a dog attacked our small dog and my wife fell down hard during the attack. The spray was on her key chain. Interestingly, they did NOT even ask about the 4 inch folding Buck knife she keeps in the door compartment in order to cut fruit. They did ask about my hypos since I am a diabetic. The search lasted about 10-12 minutes and we waited on a nearby bench when my wife says she has to go to the bathroom "bad." I say quietly to hold it since I think if she asks to go to a bathroom we BOTH are going to be strip searched. I said the friendly border guys will suspect she was trying to disgard some "illegal substance" since they had not searched our persons. She held it! Upon completion of the search I said to the female agent that I noticed she did not seach the car's motor area and her offhand reply was well "maybe we will do that tomorrow." Oh the subtle ways of terror!
