They did a great job of hiding their gun control agenda on the New Imporved Obama website its under urban policy, but here it is:

Address Gun Violence in Cities: As president, Barack Obama would repeal the Tiahrt Amendment, which restricts the ability of local law enforcement to access important gun trace information, and give police officers across the nation the tools they need to solve gun crimes and fight the illegal arms trade. Obama and Biden also favor commonsense measures that respect the Second Amendment rights of gun owners, while keeping guns away from children and from criminals who shouldn't have them. They support closing the gun show loophole and making guns in this country childproof. They also support making the expired federal Assault Weapons Ban permanent, as such weapons belong on foreign battlefields and not on our streets.

I just want to post this so my fellow gun owners can see that Obama and Biden have not CHANGED one bit. I know a number of folks have posted here about how they will not be pushing gun control.

I hope the moderators will leave this up so folks can see and read in their own words ehat BHO and JB have in store for us.

Thanks

Just words...Just speeches...

As well all know the major Democrat players have long displayed an anti-gun stance in hopes for the popular vote (in most cases, I am not saying all individual Democrat gun owners fit this bill just the main heads of the Democrat party). Each party will promise the world to the voters in the election times and most of those promises are never kept. It’s just words and speeches to hype the voter up into believing their respective candidate will look out for their votes in the long run.

But, even if B.O. & J.B. gets into office I hardly believe that our 2nd amendment gun rights will be taken away over night.....but, it may happen in the long term....who knows.

Just my 2 cents.

Funny, on History Channel here in CO, I keep seeing ads "I'm an NRA member, I hunt, I target shoot, and I support Obama."

...as it pans back to show his double barrel O/U shotgun, pristine clothes, clean shaved face, nice luxury SUV in an open field as if he had driven to the middle of nowhere to hunt doves. In a nice SUV. With pristine clothes. Just after shaving.

PTK:

It ain't easy portraying a redneck. Fail at that, and you fail at the "message".

Ever seen a redneck trying to portray a liberal socialite? Can't be done either.

There ought to be a law that if you are going to say you are for the free exercise of a right, you ought to freely exercise that right yourself and not hire a surrogate to lie about it for you.

At least Kerry put himself on film to lie about it. (It didn't help him, though.)

Now, Dick Chaney on the other hand...

Please explain, what is the Tiahrt amendment? What is it an amendment too? Maybe I missed something in civics, but that's been 50 years ago, but I thought amendments were to to the constitution, and had to be passed by congress and approved by a high percentage of the States. So my question is, how can a president "repeal" an amendment?

The Tiarht amendment prohibits the BATFE from releasing data on gun traces to anyone BUT Law enforcement and prosecutors. Som mayors and Lawyers and anti gun organizations are upset, because they want to use this data to sue gun manufacturers and dealers out of business.

The above link is the FOP (Fraternal Order of Police) letter opposing release of the data, becuase it jeopardizes undercover operations and officers safety.

16 April 2007

The Honorable Alan B. Mollohan and Rodney Frelinghuysen
Chairman and Ranking Member
Subcommittee on Commerce, Justice, Science and Related Agencies
Committee on Appropriations
U.S. House of Representatives
Washington, D.C. 20515

Dear Mr. Chairman and Representative Frelinghuysen,

I am writing on behalf of the membership of the Fraternal Order of Police to express our strong support for the inclusion of language in the FY 2008 Commerce, Justice, Science and Related Agencies appropriations bill to prohibit disclosure of firearms trace data by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) firearms to non-law enforcement entities.

The FOP has supported this language since the original version was first enacted several years ago because of our concern for the safety of law enforcement officers and the integrity of law enforcement investigations. For example, the disclosure of trace requests can inadvertently reveal the names of undercover officers or informants, endangering their safety. It may also tip off the target of an investigation, as appears to be the case in New York City. According to media reports last year, law enforcement sources cited that as many as "four cases were compromised and an additional 14 were put at risk" by private investigators employed by the city who acted on the basis of trace data. In this case, the investigators conducted "sting" operations for the city's civil suit against several gun stores that had been identified through firearms trace data. As a result, several gun trafficking suspects under investigation by law enforcement changed their behavior to avoid scrutiny. This is exactly the type of interference that caused the FOP to originally support language restricting the use of the data to law enforcement.

While we recognize that court decisions have reduced the effectiveness of this provision by allowing disclosure of trace data in civil suits, we continue to believe that its inclusion is extremely important and, on behalf of our more than 325,000 members, we urge that it be included in the bill when it is introduced. Thank you in advance for considering our view on this issue. Please do not hesitate to contact me or Executive Director Jim Pasco if I can be of any further assistance.

Sincerely,

Chuck Canterbury
National President

The Tiarht amendment has been an annual amendment to the ATF's budget bill for the last 10 or so years.

y'know, there's part of me that could almost stand seeing Obama elected and have him pass these gun control measures. it would likely mean, at the next election, the swing back towards republicans for both congress and the presidency. we may need to take a step backwards before we can take two more steps forward.

Every morning the local country station plays this ad...

"Barack Obama and John McCain will both make sure we keep our guns," says the narrator, Roy Schoenke, who heads a Democratic-leaning gun-owners group - American Hunters and Shooters Association. "But what about keeping our jobs." Schoenke, a former [Redskins] professional football player, then employs a variety of football metaphors to back Obama's record on jobs, and decry McCain's.

I hope nobody is buying what they're selling.

here's and excerpt from this article: http://www.truthout.org/article/gun-groups-buoyed-court-ruling-are-working-more

A relatively new gun owners group, the American Hunters and Shooters Association, is focused on conservation and has criticized the NRA and other groups for promoting political candidates who are strong on gun rights but not on protecting hunting areas from developers.

"What good is your gun if there's nowhere to hunt?" said John Robinson, the association's chief of staff.

This group, which is less than three years old, has endorsed the Democratic nominee, Sen. Barack Obama of Illinois, whom it sees as more supportive of conservation.

Obamadinejad's got people working the various gun fora. I almost feel sorry for them. It must get old being constantly called a liar, and knowing that you ARE a liar.

here's a little more on AHSA

http://www.politicaldebris.com/2008/09/anti-gun-group-american-hunters.html

Robert Ricker (Executive Director, AHSA)

• Paid witness against the firearms industry for cases where plaintiffs attempted to hold gun manufacturers liable for the criminal misuse of their products by third parties.

• Monthly salary of $3000; AHSA claims no more than 150 members who pay $25 dues. The rest of the money comes from "individual contributions" with the largest contributors on the AHSA board of directors.

• Paid an hourly fee of $225 to $250 dollars for testimony, depositions, and meetings with the Brady Campaign.

• Consults for the Educational Fund to End Handgun Violence (the "educational" arm of the Coalition to Stop Gun Violence). (http://www.csgv.org/

• Consults with Virginians for Public Safety (http://www.vapublicsafety.com/) (lobbying for additional restrictions on law abiding gun owners).

Ray Schoenke (President, AHSA)

• Mr. Schoenke, his wife, his daughter and son have been generous donors of anti-gun candidates including: Al Gore, Barbara Boxer, Bill Clinton, Dianne Feinstein, Ted Kennedy, Carolyn McCarthy and John Kerry.

• Mr. Schoenke and his wife donated $10,000 to Handgun Control, Inc. (HCI) in 2000.

• Mr. Schoenke’s daughter and son each contributed $5000 to HCI in 2000.
John Rosenthal (President, AHSA Foundation)

• Rosenthal is the leader of Stop Handgun Violence, the principal anti-gun group in the state of Massachusetts (credited with being the "political force behind the strict gun control laws of Massachusetts")

• Rosenthal is a former member of the HCI board of directors, now known as the Brady Campaign.

• Rosenthal has most recently focused his energy on voicing opposition to firearms’ advertisements during sporting events.

Jody Powell (Co-Chairman, AHSA Advisory Board)

• Press Secretary for one of the most anti-gun U.S. administrations, President Jimmy Carter.

Joe Vince (Board Member, AHSA)

• Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) architect of the Clinton-Gore regulatory assault on the Second Amendment.

• His company Crime Gun Solutions (CGS) employs a number of other ex-ATF officials including Gerard Nunziato, who told the Houston Chronicle that "If it wasn’t for criminals, there wouldn’t be a gun industry in this country."

• Crime Gun Solutions provides consulting services for the lawyers at the Brady Campaign, frequently appearing as paid expert witnesses in lawsuits against the firearms industry.

Now you tell me that this is a Pro gun group. Looks Like Barack Obama has a ANTI GUN group endorsing him. I bring this up now because CBS news decided to run an article about the NRA bringing up Gun rights against Obama. In their article they use AHSA as the case that Obama is actually for gun rights. Now you know its a lie.

Hunters and Shooters Support Obama: He "Gets It"

Today, as president of the American Hunters and Shooters Association (AHSA), I announced our endorsement of Senator Barack Obama for the Democratic nomination for president of the United States. Because the gun issue has recently become a factor in the Democratic primary in Pennsylvania, I want to share the remarks I made today:

As a gun rights organization we have not come to this decision lightly. We were formed two years ago because our research shows that millions of gun owners wanted a change. They not only wanted an organization that would protect their gun rights but an organization that was also committed to the protection of their communities as well as the protection of our lands.

We reached out to the Obama campaign several weeks ago to offer our support and approval as was reported by Paul Bedard of US News and World Report.

We believe recent attacks on Senator Obama's stand on the 2nd Amendment and his commitment to our hunting and shooting heritage are unfair and American Hunters and Shooters Association is stepping up to set the record straight.

Senator Obama has clearly demonstrated his commitment to the 2nd Amendment by his vote in support of the Vitter amendment to HR 5441, the Department of Homeland Security Appropriations bill of 2007. This amendment prevents the Government from confiscating guns in a time of crisis or emergency.

Imagine how the citizens felt during Hurricane Katrina when government agents kicked in doors to confiscate law abiding citizens' guns at a time when they needed them the most. We know Senator Obama "gets it." To say that he is an elitist is patently ridiculous.

To hunters and shooters everywhere, Senator Obama's vote demonstrated a fundamental understanding of the meaning of the 2nd Amendment which means he recognizes the individual right of all citizens to keep and bear arms. Senator Clinton, on the hand, failed to grasp the importance of this critical issue to hunters and shooters and voted against this Amendment. She turned her back on America's gun owners.

In addition, Senator Obama's commitment to conservation and protection of our natural resources and access to public lands demonstrates to us his commitment to America's hunting and shooting heritage.

Senator Obama will be a strong and authentic voice for America's hunters and shooters and it is with great pleasure that we endorse his candidacy.

They also support making the expired federal Assault Weapons Ban permanent, as such weapons belong on foreign battlefields and not on our streets.

Really? I'm not aware of any military that uses semi-auto only rifles... just trying to confuse the public and make them think that it's totally legal to go buy a "machine gun"

*******s.

...riiiiight.

I saw that too and threw a grape at the TV.

In his speech the other day in VA he said "I don't want to take your shotgun away. I don't want to take you rifle away. I don't want to take your (pause) handgun away."

...mutter mutter... oh, even handguns.... mutter.... well he's not so bad... mutter...

WHY DO YOU THINK TAKING ANY OF THEM IS EVEN AN OPTION? It's not. The militia will shoot you.

He also never said that we would be able to buy another gun in our lives, just that he didn't want to take away the ones that we already own. Be very aware of what "they" are saying, but MORE aware of what they are NOT saying. It's pretty easy when you're giving an uncontested speech to not say what you are going to do, not say what you are not going to do, and then do whatever you want once you have the ability (check, balances, and the like aside).

Where in the 2A does it mention hunting? It drives me crazy every time hunters are dragged out to tell you about guns. The 2A is about millitary hardware used to keep our government in check. Hunting is something that can be acomplished with out projectile weapons of any sort.

One mans' foreign battlefield, is another mans' home to defend to the death... An O/U shotgun is not the best weapon in this scenerio...

And just for a little contrast...

Just for some contrast, the McCain-Palin site.

Protecting Second Amendment Rights

John McCain believes that the right of law abiding citizens to keep and bear arms is a fundamental, individual Constitutional right that we have a sacred duty to protect. We have a responsibility to ensure that criminals who violate the law are prosecuted to the fullest, rather than restricting the rights of law abiding citizens. Gun control is a proven failure in fighting crime. Law abiding citizens should not be asked to give up their rights because of criminals - criminals who ignore gun control laws anyway.

Gun Manufacturer Liability

John McCain opposes backdoor attempts to restrict Second Amendment rights by holding gun manufacturers liable for crimes committed by third parties using a firearm, and has voted to protect gun manufacturers from such inappropriate liability aimed at bankrupting the entire gun industry.

Assault Weapons

John McCain opposes restrictions on so-called "assault rifles" and voted consistently against such bans. Most recently he opposed an amendment to extend a ban on 19 specific firearms, and others with similar characteristics.

Importation of High Capacity Magazines

John McCain opposes bans on the importation of certain types of ammunition magazines and has voted against such limitations.

Gun Locks

John McCain believes that every firearms owner has a responsibility to learn how to safely use and store the firearm they have chosen, whether for target shooting, hunting, or personal protection. He has supported legislation requiring gun manufacturers to include gun safety devices such as trigger locks in product packaging.

Banning Ammunition

John McCain believes that banning ammunition is just another way to undermine Second Amendment rights. He voted against an amendment that would have banned many of the most commonly used hunting cartridges on the spurious grounds that they were "armor-piercing."

DC Personal Protection

As part of John McCain's defense of Second Amendment rights, he cosponsored legislation to lift a ban on the law abiding citizens of the District of Columbia from exercising their Constitutional right to bear arms.

Criminal Background Checks

John McCain supports instant criminal background checks to help prohibit criminals from buying firearms and has voted to ensure they are conducted thoroughly, efficiently, and without infringing on the rights of law abiding citizens.

Background Checks at Gun Shows

At a time when some were trying to shut down gun shows in the name of fighting crime, John McCain tried to preserve gun shows by standardizing sales procedures. Federal law requires licensed firearm sellers at gun shows to do an instant criminal background check on purchasers while private firearm sellers at gun shows do not have to conduct such a check. John McCain introduced legislation that would require an instant criminal background check for all sales at gun shows and believes that such checks must be conducted quickly to ensure that unnecessary delays do not effectively block transactions.

The Firearm Purchase Waiting Period

John McCain has opposed "waiting periods" for law abiding citizen's purchase of firearms.

The Confiscation of Firearms After an Emergency

John McCain opposes the confiscation of firearms from private citizens, particularly during times of crisis or emergency. He voted in favor of an amendment sponsored by Senator David Vitter prohibiting such confiscation.

Stiffer Penalties for Criminals Who Use a Firearm in the Commission of a Crime

John McCain believes in strict, mandatory penalties for criminals who use a firearm in the commission of a crime or illegally possess a firearm. Enforcing the current laws on the books is the best way to deter crime.

Unless it results in permanent anti gun laws that remain and then are viewed as normal or necessary to preserve safety in 10-20 years.
Much like the Brady Bill. Do you still have to complete a background check and get official permission from government to purchase a firearm from NICs?

The AWB was viewed the same way, and politicians were not about to remove it, and even many pro gun owners had started to believe it was all that was keeping those evil weapons out of the hands of ____.
Fortunately it had a sunset provision. It expired, crime had no real change either way, but people gained back more of thier freedoms. Freedoms very important to America.

In 1986 a tiny rider was attached to a pro gun bill (and passed with a voice vote after many went home that would have been against it, and the voice vote not even clear) banning new machineguns for regular peasants. It had no impact on crime, but is now viewed as necessary to keep us safe by many. Even though it had no real change on crime or safety, it is now 'necessary' and few politicians would vote against it or even propose it be removed.

So yes it may have the result you mention, but at what permanent costs? What crazy laws could end up in place that the next generation views as all that has been keeping them safe?

Yeah it's good to be reminded of candidate's gun positions, so thanks to the OP...

I think in essense, there are far more important things than gun control right now. And, probably for quite some time to come.

However...

Should the current economic situation worsen and lengthen, then all those people standing close to the line between law and lawlessness will straddle it or cross it.

The weapon of choice will probably be a pistol. Or one of those nice plastic stocked semi auto type rifles. People will get hurt and killed, and more people will cry out for control.

Never mind that there are laws on the books making it illegal for felons to possess weapons. That background checks are already required. That penalties are stiffer for weapon related crimes.

It will all boil down to the "evil" weapon. A gun. Not the evil in the man.
