How is the height of a front sight measured? I have a Ruger 77/357 with the tiny little brass bead. The sight is set in a 3/8" dovetail that's 8.3 mm wide. Brownell's has a wide variety of red fiber optic front sights that would fit this dovetail which I assume is fairly standard. However they all come in a variety of heights and darned if I can quite figure out how they are measured. I Googled this and basically it looks like sources I found measured from the dead center of the bore.

How are these aftermarket sights measured for height? My rear sight is nominally adjustable for elevation so I do have a very little bit of wiggle room there but only about 1mm up or down at most.

From Brownell's sight height calculator page:

* For rifles, you measure the front sight height from the bottom of the dovetail to the top of the sight. For pistols you measure the height of the blade only. This is true unless stated otherwise in the sight specifications.
