Frustrating private sale experience, unintended consequences?

One of the things we pointed out during the proposed federal UBC was that dealers would charge $125 on a $30 gun (like they do in D.C.) then they came back with, "we'll make it a $25 maximum fee", which we said dealers will just refuse to do transfers and now you've just outlawed private sales (this was directed at the fence sitters in Congress, obviously the outlawing of private sales would be an anti's wet dream).

To comment about sales tax being on a transfer I've never heard of that, you aren't selling anything and what's to say you don't do free transfers? (I know shops that do).

To comment about sales tax being on a transfer I've never heard of that,
NJ charges sales on top of the State NICS fee
$15.00 plus 6% sales tax on top of that
Then there is the fee for the FFL which is separate from the State NICS fee.

Ouch. State fees, tax, licensing, all just to own a gun, which a criminal can just go to Home Depot and build for $30..

Here in Florida is not required for private sales, but all responsible gun owners do transfer them in private sales.

I don't live in Florida, but I wouldn't call that "responsible." I'd call it surrendering. You're buying into the idea that somehow it's your responsibility to keep a paper trail that government might like you to keep, but can't muster the political support for to pass a law and require.

Downright shameful if you ask me.

Dr Rob,did you try a local shop that you frequent and are a loyal customer of? I would think they would do the transfer for a regular customer.I would go to The Gun Room in Lakewood as they are my favorite local shop. The other option I have considered is driving to Cheyenne and completing the sale there. As far as I can tell,it is legal, even if inconvenient. Won't be an issue for me much longer,as I'm moving to South Carolina soon.

I assure you they do not all do it. I understand you're new here and I looked at your previous posts to see what they were about. You do not appear to be a troll based on your other posts, but this post certainly makes you seem like one.

FFL s are more than happy to do them here and take your money so I dont understand the reasoning behind not doing it.

I'll give you some reasoning behind not doing it.

1. You are not required to by law.
Our rights have been infringed enough. I'm not going one inch out of my way to go above and beyond laws that shouldn't exist in the first place.

2. It costs money. Why should people have to pay to exercise a constitutional right?

3. It does absolutely nothing to reduce crime.

Osprey: Dr Rob and I have both purchased guns from Jensen's. I live here and am in their store several times a month buying something or other and I have used them for transfers from out of state purchases. They simply do not do person to person as it involves logging the firearm in as if they purchased it and then logging it out to the purchaser as if they sold it. An FFL older may choose to do that in order to lure future business from the participants but I don't hold any animosity towards a business that chooses not to because that is their right. I hold my animosity for those in positions of power who seek to rule against the will of the people who cause these fiasco's.

Did any of the FFL gave you a specific reason to NOT do the transfer? Here in Florida is not required for private sales, but all responsible gun owners do transfer them in private sales. I would be willing to wager that <1% of the private transfers in FL are done at FFLs.

Here in MO, F2F transactions are legal.

Since you also live in Illinois have you tried to verify that a buyers Foid was valid in order to do a private sale? It is required now. Haven't had to do it yet. Supposed to call the Illinois State Police but I wonder if they know about it?

I do the verification that the buyer's FOID Card is currently valid through the State Police online site at http://www.isp.state.il.us/foid/foidp2p.cfm.

It takes less than a minute.

It is my understanding that a private seller is not actually forced to verify the FOID status, but doing so lessens his/her liability under state law if the firearm is later used to do something illegal. Of course, I could be wrong - according to my wife, I usually am.
