I own a Beretta Model 92FS, a Taurus PT92, a Browning commercial FN built High Power, an original CZ75 (bought in W. Germany in the late 1970's), a S&W Model 39-2, and a BUNCH of 1911A1 pistols, all in .45 ACP. I have shot the RIA 1911A1 in 9x19, as well.

I don't care for the safety positioning on the Beretta or the S&W.

My Browning still has the magazine disconnect (collectible), and the trigger is a bit stiff as a result.

The CZ75 is a nice gun. I am put off by the shape and appearance of the controls, though. It is also not quite as accurate as it's fans would have you believe.

The Model 39-2 is a fine feeling handgun. Some models, especially in the early runs, wouldn't feed JHPs of all types, though. It's attracted an almost cult following, driving prices of nice examples up.

I like my Taurus PT92. It's an ancient version, without a decocker, that has had well over 30,000 rounds put through it. The only replacements have been recoil springs, and magazines. Safety location and operation are 1911 like. It has also proven more reliable than my Beretta 92FS (second locking block in under 3000 rounds), and more accurate. The comment about the PT92 using different magazines and holsters than a Beretta 92 struck me as useless. You can't use magazines or holsters for the S&W 39-2 on any other gun in that group, either.

ALL of my military years were with the 1911A1 platform. They simply fit more people, and are usually more accurate because of that. The single action trigger is the easiest to master, as well.

The advice to shoot them, then decide, is the best thing out of this thread. :)

100% of its fans agree with your statement?

Since you are game for a single-stack mag, consider the Smith and Wesson Model 39-2.

Talk about a gun that people rave about how it feels in their hand.

I'm a big fan of the Smith & Wesson Model 39-2. Best fitting handgun I've ever handled I believe. I don't have one right now, but have owned several of them over the years. I might have to look for another one soon.

Right now the only 9mm I own is a FEG "Hungarian Hi-Power". I have shot it a lot, but in that limited shooting it's been flawless. Probably too heavy for me for an EDC, but it's a range toy for me anyway.

I've long admired the Browning HP, but never wanted to pay the price for one. I found this one a few weeks ago for $350.00 and figured it would scratch the itch. A Browning has a nicer finish, but I couldn't tell you if it's a "better" gun.

The safety is too small and stiff for my taste, but as I said, it's not a carry gun. For the range, it's not a big deal. Also for me, it's hard to rack the slide unless the hammer is back, but I've got some arthritus in my hands. It's probably not the gun...:D The trigger is a littel gritty and has a short takeup, but breaks clean after that.

We live in an awesome time to be gun owners. Think of all the choices we have! A Korean military 9mm based on an improved S&W design which copied the HP? Sure, why not!

Nice pistol. And thanks for your post.

I've been looking into an FEG for a long time now, which is why it's on the list. And of the pistols I'm considering it is usually the cheaper of the three, which is a big plus. Though the RIA isn't a whole lot more expensive, unlike the Beretta.

RIA 1911 - I tried a Tactical? version with the
beavertail/cmdr style hammer Novak llike sights
etc. and it had a nice trigger pull, course
there's nothing like a 1911 trigger.

My full size 9x19 is the base model
CZ 75B 9mm = 14+1 capacity. uber reliable and
accurate. The grip shape and profile is similar to the
BHP but, the slide is reverse rails from the inside out, lilke a Sig 210
and it is in your budget range.

I've always wanted a 1911 in Commmander size in 9mm
heck a Commander is about the size of most full size service pistols
cept the 92FS is a tank imho of course.

This STI Spartan is @$700.00 & you can get it in 9mm. This is a nice gun for the money.

I've owned both a taurus pt99 and a beretta. I preferred the taurus due to the frame safety.

If you liked the 1911, then ria makes a quite functional 1911 in 9mm quite inexpensively.
I'm a fanboi of CZ and BHP, I dont like 1911's (except the ria in 9mm I had lol). The CZ75/85 based stuff may be worth a look, as would a SW59 series handgun. You an snatch up a milsurp BHP MKIII for about 500 after shipping in excellent condition from cdisales on gunbroker. They have some that aren't quite as well maintained for under 400.

The comment about the PT92 using different magazines and holsters than a Beretta 92 struck me as useless. You can't use magazines or holsters for the S&W 39-2 on any other gun in that group, either

you can convert beretta mags to work in the taurus with a small file.. basically the notch in the mag is a little too small to work in the taurus. If you do that, you cannot use it in a beretta, unless you swap the side of the mag release (so you have the mag release on the right for the beretta and the left for the taurus.. then it would work in both )

I'm a BHP fan, CZ's are great for ergonomics but the LOP is just too long for an EDC
I've been carrying a CZ-75D PCR for 13 years. It has been an excellent concealed carry gun, and very versatile as it is good for the range, or home defense as well.

Just to respond to the comment about HP mags being expensive.
Mec-Gar brand go for about $22-25 and are the same mags that Browning sells for $45+ except that they have a NICER finish. Mec-Gar makes the Browning mags.
In todays world, $25 mags are not expensive, except for Beretta & 1911 GI mags.

I would take the Beretta 92. They function well, look good, and are reliable. I personally would stay away from anything in the 1911 system, especially by RIA. The reason for this is simple reliability, I don't care what anybody says about their individual 1911, they are not reliable guns compared to modern weapons. Also, the mag capacity for a 9mm 1911 is not good. I don't shoot a Beretta 92 well, but that's not the guns fault. I would like to echo what I read from another poster, the Sig 2022 is a great gun for the price, and cheaper than the 92 as well. I personally use a 226 but had a 2022 that I sold strictly for the need for cash, but I loved that gun, i shot it very well and it's SOLID for the money.

I vote NO on the Taurus. Their guns are junk in my opinion. The High Power is renowned for quality and the Beretta is good enough for the military so...
Personally, if I only had one handgun it would be a K-frame S&W in .357.
It's small enough to carry, it's big enough to handle magnum loads and it's versatile enough to let you use light target loads up through full power magnums. I like a 3" bbl but they're more common in 4"
Rock solid quality and durability and one of the best triggers in the industry.

I looked at one the other day for the first time. I was impressed not only by the feel, but the trigger on it was very nice. Especially for a DA.

If you have not tried the HK p30s you should give it a shot. Personally I love the grip and I like having the option to carry cocked and locked or sa/da. Being a lefty I appreciate the fully ambi controls

I've all three of your contenders.

I hate DA/SA operation and stopped buying them after the Beretta 92 and SIG 226. Both are great after the first shot, but I never could get used to that DA first shot.
The Taurus allows cocked and locked operations so I actually prefer it to the Beretta 92. This would be my choice if round count was paramount.

The HiPower is a great pistol but its trigger will never match a decent 1911.

The RIA "Tactical" 9mm is the the 9mm pistol I shoot the most since getting it when they first came out. Over 10,000 rounds through it already. For reference the 9mm I shoot second most often is the S&W M&P9.

You only asked about three so I won't suggest others, there are far too many good 9mm pistols out there to bother arguing about them.

I'm sure the HK p30 is a great firearm but, a couple hundred dollars more than I want to spend. One could get a very nice, used Hi-Power for that kind of money.

I own all three of the pistols you are asking about as well as the CZ-75B. I would put the CZ at the top of my list followed by the Hi-Power (FN). I'm a 1911 guy and I like my RIA but I had issues with it when I first bought it (very minor and was repaired free of charge) and it shook my confidence in the gun a bit. I haven't had an issue since, but it's always in the back of my head. Next time you are at your LGS spend some time with a CZ, it may make it's way on to your list.

My local LGS has a Beretta 92 and a CZ Sp-01 for rent. I may try them both out before making any decisions. Had never even considered the CZ before this thread.

To me, the SP-01 is a step above the CZ75. It is on my short, short list as soon as I can save up enough pennies......

Another CZ fan here, but I like others. The thing about CZ is that they're pricing their guns in the 500 range while other makers of equally classic and quality guns are pricing theirs at 50% to 100% higher than that.

BEWARE THOUGH: Just saw at the Damascus Gun site that CZ's will be going up soon!

And to think that 4 or 5 years ago they were like under 300 bucks or something! :(
