Browning Hi Power vs Beretta M9

Texas Colt, that's comforting to know, I'll be unarmed in a "Green" zone that could turn red easily, or a more likely scenario is I could be singled out because of my access to military materials or simply for being an American.:banghead:

not very ambi...

No tac rail either...

The MK III Hi Power has been ambi for twenty years. You can add an ambi safety to older ones easily.

As for "tac rails".

I'd choose the BHP. It fits my hand and is well balanced (to me). The Beretta, while a superb gun in its own right, is simply too big and unwieldy for me.

Slide release? Mag release? Hello? Bueller???...

The Beretta M-9/M-9a1 models have more ambi features than standard high powers,. Do High Powers have mag releases that can be moved? Huh? Do they? How about the slide release? Ambi on factory models? Nyet! :fire:

Also the high power pistols DO NOT have tac rails either! ;)

All good reasons for the High Power. Here are some more: Magazine floorplates that don't fall apart, better magazines, single action trigger, better ergonomics... And I shoot mine left handed as well as I shoot the Beretta lefty, actually better because of the improved ergonomics...

I think I am about to be hired by a big time military contractor in the Middle East in a non combat position. Actually I don't know if I will even be allowed to carry.

I see TONS of contractors here carrying sidearms, and I can't believe they are all security.

Back to the OP question, I have owned a Beretta 92 and qualified with the Beretta M9. I have I have never shot the Browning HP.

With that in mind, I would choose the unknown but revered HP over the M9! The M9 is about 30% larger and heavier than it needs to be and I find them unreliable. It's a sexy looking pistol, but too cumbersome and unreliable.

Back to the OP question, I have owned a Beretta 92 and qualified with the Beretta M9. I have shot many different Berettas and none of them were reliable. I have never shot the Browning HP, but have held them and found them comfortable - and their designer was a genius!

I'd take the M9 for the extra capacity and extra muzzle energy afforded by the slight increase in barrel length. I've never found an M9 or my personal 92FS to be unreliable...but then again neither was my BHP. When I owned my BHP with my current 92FS, I simply liked shooting the 92FS more and found that the BHP was getting left home often, so I offloaded it with no regrets.

.

Being a 1911 guy I find the Beretta safety works the wrong way (down is “safe”) so I would not choose it. In my never-so-humble opinion that is an inexcusable flaw.

Even though both High Powers that I have owned were very finicky I would have to go with the work of the incomparable John Moses Browning.

I would forget both and carry a couple extra frags. Concerning handguns the BHP is my all time favorite but I'm not big on handguns in combat.

Whew. "f-R-ags".

I misread that the first time I was going through replies!!

If you are gonna be in the Green Zone or on any large FOB...you don't need a gun...seriously don't worry about it. If you will be going outside the wire...well make your own decision on that.

I've carried an AK, Sig P226, M9 and M4 in various combat zones. I'd take the HP given a choice between that and an M9. I'd take a Sig P226 and an AK w/ Ultimak rail and micro Aimpoint given free choice in both sidearm and primary.

Choice don't matter tho, in Iraq next year I'll have an M4 again and maybe M9.

+1 to what strambo said. On-base, a weapon is just something to have to carry 24/7. OTW, you should be able to get authorized if you really have a need.

Own both, would go with BHP if given choice. I envy the Aussies I see every day with BHPs...
