Took both of my kids ages 11 and 13, out to the range yesterday. With all that they do (football, track, volleyball, band and basketball) it is hard to find time sometimes to get them out there.
Brought along two Ruger 10/22's, one the compact model I got for them with an older model Weaver .22 scope, and one that I use in local rifle competition in open sight category, and a Ruger MkII Bull Barrel with Millet Red Dot that I also use in local competition. Neither one had shot the pistol before.
For a target, I set up a spinner at 25 yards, and then we had some cherry tomatoes that fell off the plant in a storm the other night. (major crop loss, how do I get a goverment check for that? ) The tomatoes were about the size of a quarter.
Both my kids did great at the spinner, but the 11 year old daughter was particularly good with the MkII.
She got the mark on her tomato in 4 shots. The boy took more shots to get it, but for some reason, the first hit only made a small hole in the tomato and DID NOT GO THROUGH IT, but appeared to spin it and leave it. He finally did scalp the tomato, leaving a nice semi-circle cut at the top of it.
The main thing was that they were both smiling like crazy during the session!
Both were being taught trigger control, safety at the range and breathing control. Both were picking it up like mad.
Man, I was one proud and happy Dad. This is the first time that they have actually asked when we are heading back to the range! I think I got both of them at just the right time!
Now, if I could only get the wife to like guns.
The Doc is out now, and very, very happy.
