Last week I filled out the paperwork at my local GM store to have an AR-15 transferred in. Yesterday I got a phone call from the gun department saying the transfer request had been denied because the AR is an "assault rifle".

I called the corporate customer service office to complain and maybe reason with them. The response from Lena was what I expected-AR's are considered to be in the category of assault rifles and GM does not sell or allow transfers of such weapons. I tried to explain to her that an AR is not an AW but she just kept repeating the corporate mantra and refused to discuss it with me. I asked for her supervisor but she wouldn't allow me to talk to anyone else, but she did give me the CEO's name, Mark Baker.

I will be writing him tomorrow and I am enclosing some material I printed off the Internet in an attempt to educate him and hopefully have this ridiculous policy eliminated.

I hope some of you will join me. The address is: Gander Mountain Corporate Office, 180 East Fifth St., Suite 1300, St. Paul, MN 55101.

Bummer about that.

I'll bet that there is an independent gun store in your area that will do the transfer for you.:)

Gander Mountain also does not carry SKSs. I asked them if they ever carry any SKSs and the guy said "Why would you want any assault rifle" I said don't really want an "assault rifle" just something to plink with and such. He then tried to sell me a Mini 14. I went to Dunhams and bought my SKS. :)

Screw Gander Mountain. Atleast Sportsmans Wharehouse and Cabellas sell unPC black rifles...even if often they are way overpriced. The rumor floating around here is that the GM that opened last year is going under. It doesn't bother me. Who charges $600 for a used Beretta 92F that looked like it was dragged behind a truck for a couple days.

Wait, if a fixed magazine SKS is an 'assault rifle', what is a Mini 14?

:barf:

Gander Mountain caters to the hunting crowd and their firearms selections reflect this. They will not carry, buy, or transfer military style firearms. It's corporate policy, not the policy of any one individual store. The Ruger Mini-14 somehow gets buy, possibly because with the wood stock it doesn't look as "Scary" or possibly because Ruger only sells it with a 10 round mag.

Gander Mountain is what it is. Don't expect them to change their stance on this. Shop somewhere else if that bothers you enough to change your purchasing decisions.

The only caveat is that, personally, I feel they should have followed through on the transfer if they had already agreed to do so and just said that normally they wouldn't transfer a military style rifle.

So a Mini 14 isn't an AW, huh thats funny because I have had hours of fun with a Mini 14 a few thousand rounds, 3rnd burst, full-auto, and some semi-auto thrown in for good measure. Guess their incompetence isn't deserving of my business anymore.

I was told at my local Gander Mountain that they don't sell any handguns with a barrel of less than 4 inches in length.Seems that they are considered a VBT ( very baad thing ),and Gander doesn't want to be connected to " Saturday Night Specials". You can't even buy a book about the AR series of rifles.

Gander Mtn is a funny thing. I was at their grand opening when they first came to my town, and they had a nice selection of pistols. I was looking for a Sig p232 at the time. I got the some crap-tastic answer about them not selling small concealable weapons due to the image they portray, etc etc. Fine, whatever, I bough a bunch of ammo that was way-cheap and didn't frequent the store for several years. Fast forward to last year, I get a flyer in the mail from our local Gander Mtn. displaying all kinds of sales on firearms and ammo. In the flyer, guess what! A Beretta Tomcat! Now that is smaller than a P232 no? I figured I'd go look around. They had 3 P232's and 3 different Tomcat's, and a few SW J-frames as well along with all the usual servce-sized pistols. I guess they changed their policy somewhere along the way on pistols. I did ask about an AR for the heck of it and got the same "oh we don't deal in military assualt weapons" line.

All in all, I like Gander Mountain, at least the store in St Cloud, MN. I find it odd that they would sell me an H&K USP TACTICAL, because that is a military style handgun. I've gotten a couple of good deals from that store. In addition, they also sell many ex-LEO handguns. I guess that their handgun stuff won't fall into the EBR category. I asked about the EBRs once and the counter guy said it was their policy not to sell them. I retorted, well, you're losing business. I think they rely more on their clothing sales than their gun sales. Sportsman's Warehouse & Cabela's both sell the EBRs. Dunhams always seems to have some sort of import on sale, too.

^^^ Beat me to it.

Even a few months ago, I saw several S&W snubbies, a 2.5" M66 K frame, etc. Probably better than a 1/2 dozen wheel guns with short barrels. There were at least two Kimber Ultra carries in there too. They didn't seem to have much problem with short handguns.

I've yet to see a high capacity, 18" 12 guage there though.

The GM in Lansing, MI had 3 or 4 Garands this past fall. I wasn't in the market for one, so I didn't see what they were asking.

FWIW, I like GM. They don't have everything that I want, but there isn't a gun store in my area that does.

The only thing I buy from GM is ammo, and of that only .308 ammo as they carry bulk and its as cheap from them as it is from the internet.
All the rest of my busness goes across the hiway to the local boys and Academy.

Gander Mountain and Scheels Sports both seem to have differing ideas about assault weapons. They will sell M1A's, M1 Carbines, M1 Garands, and Ruger Mini 14's and 30's! But, not a AR.

Oh well! At least Cabelas does and so does Sportsmans Warehouse!

Not sure about them doing transfers!

GMTN stock price looks like hell 6.66 compared to CAB 16.64 maybe the front office should stop being so PC and give the customer what he wants.

Yet somehow, they have a good selection of shotguns with 7-8 round tubes, folding, collapsible stocks, etc:rolleyes:

I hate big box stores more and more, across the board, Gander, Dicks, Home Depot, Best Buy, etc etc...
