Gander Mountain upset

I just want to chime in with one of the pro-Gander Mountain comments. The GM near me is very nice. All of the guys behind the counter seem to be at least fairly knowledgeable and friendly.

They've always seemed to carry ARs. The last time I was in there (a week or so ago) they even had an AK or two and a nice HD Mossberg. If any weapon was only designed to kill people its a PGO, 18'5" bbl, 12 gauge. It even came with the SHTF tube/case thing.

To me, GM seems to have fairly reasonable prices. But then, it seems like NE Ohio is somewhat pricey, judging by what I see on THR.

Good selection, high prices, and the worst service ever!

That's GM for you.

I've waited longer than 10 minutes just to get a simple question about prices answered... all the while I'm reassured they'll be "right with me".

I sometimes go there to window shop, but I haven't bought anything since the days of $2 a box Wolf 7.62X39 there.

I certainly would have asked to speak to the manager. I would have asked the employee to tell the manager exactly what he told you, and then asked the manager what he was going to do about it.

I have been to Gander Mountain a few times in Middletown, NY. Not a bad place, always had good experiences with the hired help there. The thing that gets me is their sky high prices for ammunition; sure they have a great selection but at about 125 to 150 percent of other places' prices.

Current GM add

Check out pages 16-17. 3 AR's, A M44 and a Mossberg pump in a can.

BTW-I'll never shop there either. They reserved a choice P1 for me. Went there the next day and they brought out a POS P38 that was falling apart. As I was looking at this thing, the counter guy's buddy came in and he brought out the last P1...the one exactly describe to be over the phone with my name on it and gave it to his friend.

I was so pissed I walked out and never went back. On a side note, their ammo is so expensive, it doesn't really bother me.

BTW, does anybody know where to buy those cans? Not the whole deal, just the can.

I only buy at GM when I get a gift certificate. Even then, it's mostly fishing stuff; the gun stuff is way to expensive. They do have a nice selection of flies.

There's always a good wait at the one in Scranton(Dickson City:eek:). That being said, the people there are pretty nice. Don't have very many complex questions, so I never got the BS run around. Prices are extremely high, although you can find great deals on used, every once in a while.

Babarsac,

Ocala's new GM had cars in the lot when I passed it taking the kid's school field trip down to Orlando last week. A few in the morning and a lot in the afternoon.

It is on the west side of I-75 and can be seen from the highway. Forget which two exits it is between, but it isn't like Ocala is all that big.

Check out Pickett's Weaponry in Newberry if you have not already right on 26 in the middle of greater down town Newberry.

Also check out the Ocala Armory on the road from Ocala to Williston.

Darn it I have forgotten the name of the old shop in the intown industrial center in Ocala, that's were I got to finger an FS2000 a couple of months back.

Heads up Central Florida guys I believe THIS weekend to be a big Fairgrounds show in Orlando.....unfortunately for me Saturday I have a CMP JC Garand match in Williston.....Done some more muzzle work, dropped the CMP/Dane/SA in a newer, better condition stock and hoping for better than one place below midline this year. Might "swing by" GA in Ocala if we finish befor lunch for recon.

One of the Houston gun counter guys has deer hunted on our ranch for several years. He's sure not opposed to selling anyone anything so long as it is legal. Wish I knew which Houston location he works at so I could steer a little business his way. It seems that all the big boxes think MSRP is the minimum selling price and you definitely get what they have in stock or get stabbed for a special order. Given the qualifications they ask for to work at the gun counter it is hard to see how often these wooden indians end up working there.

I stopped at our local GM today just to kill some time. They were having what they called a "Blow out" sale and were knocking about 10% off their firearm prices.

Blow out? More like a slow leak.

To place the high prices in another context, GM offers a low hourly wage for their store employees. But they get 20% off and some days have a 30% off employee day. But one has to realize that I can get the same prices as their discounts just by shopping at Cabela's where the prices are lower.

To the guys that think they're saving money by working there, think again. I don't work there and I pay the same. Now some gun manufacturers still have pro-forms I am aware (browning once/year) so that's a deal. But even though you get 20% off the used guns. They are over priced to begin with and I get the same if not better at a local shop or Cabelas.

Our Gander here is MD will not do transfers for AR or AK varrients and I got a simular response when I brough my Savage FTR in for some accessories.

Depending on where you live, that may be a violation of their FFL. Might want to bring that up with management, or maybe even ATF.

There is no violation, FFL wise, if Gander Mountain refuses work. Getting the ATF involved would merely be capricious.

The gun and ammo prices are very much based on how active the store and department managers are. I havnt had a GM not "deal" with me.

Thr GM near me has some good deals on tactical ammo for a retail store.

7.62x39 Wolf BB HP $4.99 a box
7.62x39 Wolf BB FMY $4.49 a box
5.56 Fed XM193 $8.99 a box
.223 Black Hills Reman 55 gr FMJ 0r SP 19.00 a box of 50
.223 68gr Heavy match Black Hills reman 24.99 box of 50 or 29.99 new red box
.223 64 gr Win WB 10.99
5.56 55gr WIn WB 8.99
.223 55 gr win WB 9.99

As well as some other decent deals.

are you kidding me? file a formal written complaint to the home office, with this jerks full name, and store written in as well! i don't care what this person likes, or dislikes about any style of gun. as long as you didn't point it at him or threaten him, he has no reason to talk down to you in any way. it is a sporting goods store, that sells guns, accessories and ammunition. it is not up to him to decide what type of gun you should own. if they do not carry anything for your gun, he should have just politely said," i am sorry sir, we do not have accessories for your particular gun" and be done with it. write the home office and let him have it with both barrels!

If you recieved that sort of reception from Gander Mountian why not just take the gun into one of the other shops in the area or at least ask them if theyy could refer you to another gunsmith in the area. Talk to the guys over at Hampels (I always had okay luck with them), give the guys at Fieldsport a call (not exactly the type of gun they deal in but I'm sure they can refer you to a good smith), or if worst comes to worst take it over to Jay's in Gaylord or in Clare (a bit more of a drive than the other places). There is also a pretty good smith over in Mancelona as well (his name escapes me at the moment), at least I think he is still over that way.

I'm over in Shepherd, TX and last Saturday I visited the Spring, TX Gander. There were some black rifles, prices to gag a maggot and employes that left something to be desired.

I shoot mainly .22 and can get Federal 510 for a buck cheaper per 50 round box at Wallyworld! The help there isn't exactly superb, but if I point and mention color of box they'll USUALLY get it....

I have had really good experiences at the Gander Mountain around here( Huntsville, AL). Yea, some of there prices are STUPID expensive, but most of the guys know their stuff!!! They have always worked a deal for me. Just got to talk to them.

its good to see a local on here, small world huh? i ordered the weapon from jays in gaylord since i work out towards there, and they got it to me in 5 business days. only reason i went for GM on advice is because by the time i get home from work all the other shops are closed. i do love hampels but its such a small shop and its often crowded with guys who want to touch and not buy. cliffs was my second choice but he has short hours. fieldsport is WAYYYY expensive and unless i had a gold engraving on the side of my 12 gauge i dont think they would deal with me. MC sports is out of the question. i ended up receiving the part i needed in the mail today so my anger has subsided a bit. im not at all trying to incite a boycott of GM shops, in fact i often visit the one in Lansing off of exit 93B , its much better than the TC one. i can always expect a little bit of 'hating' while on the range, but not in a shop where i am paying for service. i pine for the day we get an outdoor world or a cabelas up here.

speaking of 'hating'. is it just me or are there 2 totally different social structures when it comes to the range community? i always noticed on the pistol side, everyone is more friendly and easier to approach/talk to and compare firearms, whereas when you go to the rifle side you get silence and odd glances. im terrible at explaining this phenomenon but maybe i am not alone. i just seem to always feel like i am more in a competition for show when i get to the longarm bench.

I honestly don't give a crud about GM customer service. I'm not paying full MSRP for a gun, period.

(I don't mean to come off as hostile, but $399 for a Stoeger Cougar? Come on!!!)

Avesguy, You have been to the one off of northlake, and I-95, Have you seen their prices for a S&W M&P 15? 950-1000! FFS. I can goto Palm beach trap and skeet club in wellington and order one and a brand new scope and still save 150$. GM prices far exceed any gun shop in palm beach county by over 100-200$. Their employees can't explain anything past what is printed on the tag that displays the price and a few specs of the weapon, and that is only after they read the tag when you hand them the rifle. If you even mention A and K in the same sentence you'll be basicly yelled at, forget even trying to get them to change a AK barrel for you.

I've bought two rifles from Sportsmans Warehouse and Gander Mountain within the last several weeks. St. Paul MN area

As I was shopping, the guy at the Sportsman's Warehouse counter was un-boxing a .45 cal Thompson submachine gun with a drum magazine. I assumed they had prepaid buyer for this $3000 ?deer gun? It is still in the rack 6 weeks later! They special ordered my .308 CZ and had it within a week and mounted my scope for free. No complaints--Good service.

Gander Mountain had a "sale" "hot buy" and I saw a .243 Win. Savage Package rifle with Simmons scope, for $339 (sans accutrigger). The next day I made the decision to buy. Sorry, sales over, now $400--I walked, Next day, I went back and the kid at the counter took my offer to buy at the sale price to the manager. It's a deal! It came with Gander's extra year guarantee, plastic gun case and gun sock. I'm happy. It shot within an inch with cheapest Federal ammo during break in.

It takes 10 happy customers to overcome one disgruntled customer.
