I need a good safe load for AP black tip for an M1 Garand using either 4895 or 3031. I don't want to burn bullets trying loads, I've only got 50 to work with. I'm looking for something close to original spec. Suggestions?

46.0 grains of IMR-4895 should give you a safe load with 168 grain M2 AP bullets.

IMR-3031 is too fast for that heavy a bullet and should not be used.

Like previously said 46 grains of IMR 4895 is a good mild load and safe. I've shot them at 46.5 and 47 grains with no pressure signs. I'd start at 46 and load a couple then work up to 48 grains maximum. I use RP 9 1/2 primers and seat the 163AP's to 3.325-3.330". I wouldn't seat them any deeper than 3.320" for the Garand. Velocity of Talon Remanufactured 30-06 M2-AP was 2660fps in one test and 46.5 grains of IMR 4895 got 2550fps. Haven't chrono'd any loads higher than 46.5 with "new" cannister factory IMR 4895. Surplus pulldown 4895 showed 2662fps at 47 grains which was close to the Talon loads but the pulldown powder was slightly faster than new IMR powder.
For a BOLT ACTION ONLY load for the 163 M2-AP in 30-06 I use IMR 4350 powder. 55 grains of IMR 4350 gives 2635fps and 56 grains gives approx. 2680fps in a 22" barreled M700. Again using RP cases and RP 9 1/2 primers seated to OAL of 3.320".
