This is my first garand.

new garand stock, everything has dropped together pretty well so far, but the trigger guard won't lock down. The picture shows where it freely goes to, and I can get it closer if I put it upside down on the carpet and press down with both hands, but I can't get it to close. I could beat it, but I migth need to do a bit of fitting first. any suggestions? I found this page. http://www.trfindley.com/pgtgfix.html

That stock looks like it was made a lot oversize so it can be fitted. The area marked 6 is the place you want to work on, but the advice given is good, and I suggest you follow it. The "ink trick" involves using a magic marker or Dykem blue on the floorplate to see where it is touching and then removing wood a little at a time until the trigger guard fits and closes properly. It should close to under 1/2 inch with just easy finger pressure, then spring enough to close the rest of the way.

Suggestion: put the trigger guard in the receiver and latch it so you can see how the parts go together and what you want to do. If, by chance, they won't go together without the stock, then there is some other problem.

a little bit of area 6 sanding and it went together. I still have to lean on it pretty hard to get it to close, but from what I gather you want it tight. Thanks for the advice guys.

I have worked on a number of these commercial stocks and in my opinion yopu should never sand there to get gaurd to close.
All of mine were tight as yours and they will close, you just gotta man up:):)
Problem with sanding is the wood will compress in time and then your lockup will be loose
Grease the trigger gaurd lug lugs, run the aperture all the way dowm, flip rifle over on carpet and "push hard" It will close
The "Only" area I would check to sand is under the receiver itself.
Install action and hold rifle up at the light, there should be a very small gap between the receiver and stock starting approx 1 1/8 inch from the back of the receiver heel up to the receiver legs. If you dont have this lightly sand under you have just enough gap that you can see daylight under it.
This is a accuracy mod as well will let guard close easier
