I have an opportunity to purchase several steel bulgarian AK47 magazines at my local gun shop. They are asking $40 for the 30 rounders and $50 for the 40 rounders. From what Obama has suggested all magazines will be grandfathered in so I understand they will still be available for purchase even if this legislation passes. However, having never lived through a high cap mag ban before I am unaware just how drastically prices will be affected. Would should I expect as far as prices go immediately after a hypothetical ban as well as a couple years into it?

Grandfathered in under what? What legislation are you referring to? I've been following POTUS and congress fairly closely and have yet to see any bills in the Senate or House banning magazines. The president requested that they act today. He did not introduce legislation, nor could he if he wanted to; he's not a legislator.

Another panic buying driven "predict the future" thread...

i don't think anything federally is going to pass.

people in new york will have to sell theirs or be criminals.

anyone who was a real shooter/collector already has all they need

the panic buyers and speculators will want to sell theirs

all the manufacturers will crank out all they can to refill distributors shops and dealers.

I think they are going to be selling dirt cheap in 3-6 months.

I picked up two for my 92. Still got a deal compared to pre SH Gander prices. Finally able to buy em without the boss getting mad... Hopefully

Psyopspec: I never said Obama introduced any legislation, I said he has suggested a course of action based on what Biden has told him and it is likely that suggestion that will turn into legislation in the house. And no, this isn't "panic buying". If it were I would not be asking for empirical evidence as what prices may be based on the last ban we had not 10 years ago, and if you truly believe such legislation has no chance of passing I question just how closely you've been following the situation.

You should see the Cheaper Than Dirt email I just got. 30 round Colt USGI mag for a bargain deal of $129.97. I regret even giving those (not High Road material) my one order (under $30) a few years ago that got me on their email list.

With all due respect, Colt magazines aren't typical of all magazine prices. Looks like everything is up a bit, but not as much as the Colt mags.

We have a winner! Not enough votes to pass means no bans folks. The panic will subside once everyone takes a deep breath and applies some logic.

My thought is that if you want those magazines, you better buy them. During the last AWB, Glock full capacity magazines sold for about $100 each.

There is absolutely no way to guess not only which legislation may or may not pass, but what mag prices might be.

Me? I am not going to pay more than normal price for mags, if I can find any, and will wait this thing out.

This. Nothing is going to get through Congress. I am super glad that I didn't purchase ANYTHING at inflated prices. I do have one standing order for 10 mags from Brownell's but that was at the standard $12ish price for PMags.

If I remember you could buy surplus AK47 magazines for $4 before the ban. Right before the ban they were running for about $40-50. During the lean years when none were being imported or made I think $25-30 a piece was pretty common. Anyone else remember it differently? IF a ban goes thru on magazines, I would venture to guess those ratios of 8x-10x as much during the panic and then a fall back to an average of about 5x whatever they are currently selling for would be close.

Quite closely. I'll admit I went to a public school, but my math says there isn't much chance of a ban passing the House. Which means that in my opinion as a day trader and hobbyist stats nerd that what you're facing is a low-probability, but high pay off event if it were to come to pass. Also as a day trader, I recommend that if anyone claims to have the answers you seek in either direction that you disregard their opinion, as such events cannot be accurately predicted.

I became a handgun owner during the original AWB. In 2003 I paid $60 each for Glock 19 magazines that I bought off gunbroker.

AZ: That is a fairly steep price. From my experience, local gun shops are not the place to look for good deals. The big online outlets will probably be all sold out for a good while. Those are the two sources most people resort to first. I bet you can find a better deal on Gunbroker. Probably the best idea is to check GB, over the next couple of weeks and look for a better deal. Sooner or later some will show up at a reasonable price. Always get combloc military steel mags and avoid the aftermarket junk.

but my math says there isn't much chance of a ban passing the House.

Math would also say that 33 Republicans in the New York Senate versus 25 Democrats means that a NY ban on guns should not have happened. If we equate math to politics. But 43-18 passed the measure. That means at least ten Republicans had to have voted for it. That means about 1/3 of Republicans in the New York Senate switched sides.

By that same token, using that formula, the House of Representatives has 233 Republicans to 200 Democrats. That means, assuming all Democrats voted along party lines, you'd just need 17 defections to pass a bill. If we use a far lesser percentage of Republican defections...1/13, or one out of every 13, a far lower percentage than were persuaded in New York to flip...That would be 18 defections and enough to pass in the House. If you go thru and start looking for news articles on Republicans Representatives who have said they might look at "some aspects" of "reasonable measures" those numbers begin to look verrry thin. Real thin.

Legislation that gets to congress is DOA.
What situation have you been following that makes you think something is going to pass?
