So after lots of reading and research I bought a new gem pro off amazon. It didn't Come with instructions, but I read online that it needed to be plugged in for 24 hrs. I did that and when I weigh something I have to tare it each time because it doesn't go back to zero. Also the 20 g weight will weigh between 20.058 and 20.021 and a little different each time I put it on. There are no electronic devices near it or any wind. Anyone heard of this?

Mine was spot on out of the box, after warmup, and still is after a year or so. Yours sounds defective. You may want to contact Amazon about returning it.

Before you do that though, you might check to make sure dirt or packing material didn't get under the platform. And make sure it's level. There's a leveling bubble built in. HTH.

Sounds like a candidate for a return. However, have you tried a calibration?
3.2 Pre-Calibration
To calibrate the scale please follow these instructions:
First remove all objects from the platform, then press
to set the display to zero. Press the display will show
“SCALE” or “LINE”. “SCALE” means to calibrate the scale
sensitivity (normal calibration);
“LINE” means to calibrate the
scale linearity. Press to confirm (If you press ,
the two kinds of calibration
can be interchanged. Please
proceed to the next step below)
3.2.1 Sensitivity (regular) calibration
When calibrating the scale sensitivity, two different weight
values can be used. According
to the shown calibration weight
value (ie 20.000) on the display, press , to select which
calibration weight value you want to use, then press
to confirm. The display will now show “
0
”. In a few seconds,
the display will change back to
the calibration weight value (ie
20.000). Place the correct calibration weight on the center of
the platform.
In a few seconds, the display will stop, and then show the
calibration weight value again (ie 20.000). This means
calibration is complete.
3.2.2 Linear calibration
When the display is showing “LINE”, press ,the scale will
display “
0
”. In a few seconds the scale will show 1/3 (or1/2) of
!*+,!
weight value of it’s full capacity (ie 10.000); put the corresponding
weight on the center of the platform.
In a few seconds, the full capacity
weight value will be shown(ie 30.000). place
the corresponding
weight(30g) on the center of the platform.
In a few seconds the display
will stop flashing and it will show the original calibration weight value (ie 30.000). Calibration is complete.
NOTE: The scale linearity has been calibrated at the factory,
this type of recalibration is
not necessary unless you need to
change or alter the loadcell or adjust for certain types of
environments,
damage or errors.

I doubt you have the weights to do a linear cal but you should be able to do a Sensitivity (regular) calibration. Nothing to lose by trying that anyway.

Yeah...I have the GemPro 250 and bought it from a scale place...it came with the calibration weight and manual and all that. It doe not need to be plugged in all night. I warm mine up for 10 minutes and it's accurate to .02 grains with check weights.

I'd suggest a calibration or send it back to Amazon.

These scales are sensitive and accurate and they are also delicate to some degree. If dropped during shipping or improperly packed it's not improbable that it might be compromised or damaged in shipping. Without a manual? I'd send it back for a refund and spend a little more to get the package with vibration pad, calibration weight and instructions from here:

Also note that there is a manual .pdf in the link above which you might find handy.

Good luck!

These things seem to be hit or miss. Mine's been trouble free and the best scale I've ever used. A friend has one, has tried all the fixes (pads, anti-static, isolated power, send back to manufacturer for calibration) and his has never worked very well. I've used both of ours so I know his has been constant problem. I don't know if I got lucky or he is cursed. After two returns to "Oldwillnotscales" without improvement he gave up.

I have also have a GemPro 250. After a couple of months my power supply stopped working, I contacted GemPro thru the email provided. They sent me a brand new scale within a week, no questions asked, remember a 30 year warranty is hard to beat.

You need to make sure you do the calibration, have it leveled, make sure you are climate controlled, It will take longer to warm up, out in a garage, if its cooler than normal. ;)

It works great, remember it is digital, temperature, vibrations, EMI, strong drafts can all have an effect. regardless of the Nay-Sayers, it is still a great scale.:)

I tried holding my cell phone next to my Gempro with a weight on the scale as a call was coming in and it didn't budge the weight it was measuring. I also set it and moved a fluorescent light right next to it and it didn't change a thing.

Vibration definitely has an effect and it doesn't take much...leveling has a huge effect and it doesn't take much. A small breeze or moving air will wreak havoc on it. Calibration "by the book" is not optional and I *always* check mine with check weights every time I set up to charge cases and weigh weights in the range of the charge I'll be throwing above and below to verify accuracy. If I'm charging 50 cases I'll stop at 25 and recheck that my 2 gr check weight reads 2 gr. and my 5 gr. reads 5 and my .5 reads .5gr, etc.

They aren't magic and getting the most of them can be apparently hit or miss and I have read reviews from folks who trashed them saying they have had 3 and none of them were correct or they crashed 2 weeks after buying etc. I do think they might be hit or miss to some degree which I have come to accept in the 21st Century/Digital Age. I'm in the electronics profession and deal with high end/expensive precision electronics all day/every day.

The days of hand craftsmanship and "quality controlled satisfaction guaranteed one size fits all" are, regrettably, largely unfound by me. YMMV. I can say that my Gempro 250 from OldwWillKnott scales was everything I expected and works accurately and flawless these past 6 months and if it crashes tomorrow I'll try and get another one under the 30 year warranty.

My GemPro 250 ate batteries at an alarming rate (even when turned off). Gave it away to my son who uses the wall wart. I won't be buying another one.

If yours came sans a manual, that could indicate that it was previously returned by someone else.....I'd send it back.

Thanks guys, I just tried to calibrate it but it didn't help. I sent a message to the seller on amazon. I bought it through them because I had$115 in amazon gift cards. Hopefully this will get fixed I have never returned anything to amazon

Update. I received a new scale and it works great so far. Have to send the broken one back in the morning free of charge.

Most excellent! Glad you got it sorted out. Can I ask who was the seller? I might want to deal with them in the future if they provide that kind of customer service.

Excellent...too bad about the hassle but I guess we all deal with the "I bought it via the 'Net and now it dun't work" phenomenon now and again. Sounds like the seller is all about customer service so good on them and spread the word.

We all like doing business with folks that take care of us when the bad stuff happens....enjoy your scale. I love mine!
