I really enjoy this forum. I came here looking for information, and found some, and more. I had expected to be flamed, but found a lot of support. Truly High Road.
One thing that bothers me as I read around the threads, are generalities. Felons are all this or all LEOs are that. It"s the LAW. etc..
I hope I can convey my thoughts, as I am not a professional writer.
I have known good and bad Cops. As I see it there are Peace Officers and Law Enforcement officers. Peace Officers maintain the peace, are "Officer Friendly",They often don't want to arrest unless they have to. They will calm a situation, avoid violent confrontation if possible and protect the rights of those they encounter.
Law Enforcement Officers on the other hand are about the LAW with emphasis on Enforcement. They have no time to be concerned with your rights, you are a civilian at best and probably a criminal. They have the authority to control you. They are an Officer of the "LAW".
Many laws are WRONG. They are not just, they are not Constitutional. Some make no sense at all, but we all have to deal with them till they can be changed.
I try to obey the laws, and consider myself a law abiding citizen. But..
I am an Outlaw, an Honest Outlaw, but there you go. I am an ex Felon.I am not a gun owner. I still hope that can be worked out through the law, or that laws will change. It may be that I will never have that right again. I cling to hope.
Felon is a nebulous term. It can mean many things in different parts of the country, or in different peoples minds. I saw a thread where someone was convicted of a misdemeanor, and folks were calling for the death penalty. Other times there is a minor infraction, and the "Law" takes away someones rights for life.
My crime was serious, and I don't sugar coat it. In my youth I got very stupid. Armed Stupidity, and I don't make light of it. I have tried to get past it. I have done my time, Paid back more than I stole, and have completed my sentence. I am one of the rare ones. Most people who get locked up don't even try. I was told that when I got out there was an 80% chance that I would be back. I did not like it there and tried to live honestly ever since. I worked hard and own my own home. I would like to have my rights back. Maybe someday. I thank those on this board who have been kind to me. I hope that I may have some input that will be helpful to others.
When I hear someone say ALL felons are scum, or All Cops are corrupt, I cringe, and know its not so. I'll chose the High Road.
