Sunny Tampa Bay, Florida!
I looked around and didn't see another thread on this. If I missed it, sorry! That being said...

Georgia has a new law that goes into effect on July 1. The law reformed the concealed carry law, and now CCW permit holders can carry a firearm onto/into public transit (among other locations). Atlanta and Hartsfield-Jackson Airport claim they do not have to follow this law, and have declared the airport a 'gun free zone.'

Rep. Tim Beardon, who helped pass the law, states Federal law prevents the possession of firearms in the controlled or "secure" areas (which it does), and the unsecure areas are regulated by state law (they are). Beardon rightly claims that the city cannot usurp state law and deny citizens ability to carry a concealed firearm that is clearly allowed by state law.

The General Manager of Hartsfield said he will have Beardon arrested. Beardon said (paraphrasing) 'just try.'

Finally! A politician with guts!

More info here.

“I can identify him, and I’ll have him arrested,” DeCosta said Monday. “We’re not fooling around. This is a post-terrorism environment.”

The new law, which Bearden sponsored, permits licensed gun owners to carry concealed firearms in parks, on public transportation and in restaurants that serve liquor. The law takes effect Tuesday.

Firearms proponents hailed the law as a victory for the Second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. They say law-abiding citizens with the appropriate permits should be allowed to carry firearms in formerly forbidden areas for self-protection.

Before the new law was passed, Georgia law banned guns from venues like public transportation and restaurants serving alcohol. More than 40 other states permit guns on public transportation, Bearden said, and 37 allow permit holders to carry weapons into restaurants.

“I was in law enforcement for 15 years,” Bearden said as the bill awaited the governor’s signature two months ago. “I never rode up on a shooting in progress. I don’t like the idea of the police telling you, ‘Get mugged, get raped, get murdered. We’ll come by, take the report, or send flowers.’ That’s the wrong message.”

Opponents, however, blasted the proposal, saying it has the potential to spark more violence than it stops. DeCosta wrote to Gov. Sonny Perdue asking him to veto the bill, and Mayor Shirley Franklin and MARTA officials publicly lambasted the idea. MARTA bus drivers gathered more than 1,000 signatures on petitions demanding bulletproof shields.

Federal law already bans guns past the security checkpoints at U.S. airports. The new state law, however, apparently would permit guns to be carried on the non-secure side of Hartsfield-Jackson by people who have gone through a background check and have been certified to carry a weapon. Licensed gun owners would be permitted to carry weapons on public transportation coming into the airport, its lobby and in restaurants outside the security checkpoints.

DeCosta said he will use the first day the new law takes effect to declare Hartsfield-Jackson a “gun-free” zone.

“We’re going to make it clear that the law does not make any allowance for guns at the airport,” DeCosta said. “Guns are not appropriate for any airport in Georgia.”

Mr. DeCosta could make life much easier on everyone if he simply declared the airport an independent nation and himself its ruler.

Or perhaps it's time to declare Hartsfield-Jackson airport a "DeCosta-Free Zone."

At any rate, it looks as if the issue of whether the law does or does not make any allowance for guns at the airport might be decided in court. It does seem that the legislator who sponsored the law might better know what it allows than an airport manager.

This is the same airport a couple years ago a misfit security officer dragged a soccer mom out of her car and put her in a choke hold because she did not move fast enough to suit him. All on video.

It will be a rude shock to Atlanta to find out they are part of Georgia after all. Who would of thought?

the airport is a freaking disaster zone. they are horribly slow, anti gun, anti getting you to your flight quickly, anti about everything you could be pro x for.

we need someone to open carry into the airport and volunteer to sue them. i cant do it, id probably lose my job over it.

I'll be watching this closely today. I think the press conference is at 10 a.m. at the airport...

I absolutely *DARE* them to arrest Tim...talk about a SHTF situation for them.

If you're not already a member of GCO you should be! http://www.georgiacarry.org

I know Bearden and he's going to do it. DeCosta and the mayor are asking for trouble; all of their anti-gun ordinances are falling in and around Atlanta. They're upset because a medium profile legislator has said that he's gonna defy their illegal pronouncements.

Why are so many people intent on creating these obstacles for law abiding gun owners? Don't they have anything better to do?

A pity he hasn't thought of bringing a state police officer, to arrest any local officer who attempts to violate the state law.

I hope this goes through and the idiot has him illegally detained.

one could make a case that he was trespassing as he was given plenty of warning. I actually hope that is what happends. The guy just wants the attention.

i also dont think they get the fact that people are LEGALLY allowed to ship a handgun/rifle/firearm on an airplane... all the have to do is get it secured at check in, and inform the airline. this nutjob is way off base. i hope someone teaches this punk a lesson. if any other right was being violated, everyone would be up in arms(not guns heh) about it.

gosh i hate atlanta. i cant wait to move. we might as well be just as bad as illinois. atlanta police already hate anyone carrying.

today, i will also be open carrying everywhere with my shoulder holster in honor of hb89 becoming law.

No, he doesn't "just want the attention". Georgia's new CCW laws, permitting carry in public transport venues (among other things), go into effect TODAY. The city of Atlanta is furious at the state legislature, and assorted petty dictator wannabees are unilaterally declaring that the law does not apply as they see fit. This is a state legislator, who fought hard to get this expanded CCW law passed, making it clear to these twits that they must obey the law. Better that he, being a legislator duly involved in the issue, nip this in the bud right now before a lot of common folk get their lives royally screwed up because someone decided he was king of the airport.

if he didn't want the attention, then why did he talk to a reporter?

but there is a diffrence he has a choice, he does not have to go there armed, she did not have a choice, she could only be black.

why did he talk to a reporter?
He invoked the attention so that the airport tinpot tyrant could not ignore the challenge. This is an issue that must be resolved immediately, else a whole lotta people are gonna end up jailed contrary to the law.
He is NOT doing this for his own ego.

he does not have to go there armed
What part of "protected rights" do you not understand?
GA just passed a law pointedly saying "you can CCW in the airport lobby", and the airport manager said "no, you can't, I'll have you arrested". Do you not understand what is going on here?
Do you believe cops can just arrest people not just for no legal reason, but in stark defiance of the law?

he is doing it for his own ego... if he wasn't, he would have just filed papers, instead he made a public threat. I hope they throw the book at him.

but there is a diffrence he has a choice, he does not have to go there armed, she did not have a choice, she could only be black.

No different. She didn't HAVE to ride the bus - she could have walked. :neener:

I love it when a representative actually stands up for the rights of the people he/she represents.....
