DHS announced today that they are going to purchase 62 million rounds of AR15 ammo. I'm sure it will spark panic buying, but I'm more interested to know why DHS NEEDS 62 million rounds of anything?

Just think, it's our tax dollars being spent on ammo that could be potentially used on the same people that payed for it.

I wonder where they keep all that ammo… dang.

you need to use more exclamation points in the title of your thread

Because in all likelihood DHS placed an order for 62 million rounds over a set amount of time. You think the Marines order 500,000 M-16s and gets them all in one bulk shipment? No, they contract to receive that number over many years. Same idea behind taking multiple years to fulfill orders for the F-22. And naval vessels. And housing subdivisions.

Nope, sorry guys --that was just my back-order finally getting fulfilled :D. I love how the article (Infowars, again, still ) references "AR15 ammo." What are the odds it's an order for 'all' the 300 Blackout in production? ;)

Well, they do tend to go through a lot of ammo for training, duty, quals, new-hires, etc.

I thought I read a couple years ago that they had something like 29 different contracts for ammo at any given time.

They also list some public info (but no specific numbers). https://www.dhs.gov/ammunition

Their contracts, like many other fed contracts for ammo, are really to fix prices over the term of the contract (usually 5 years), and the upper limits listed doesn't mean they're going to be buying that much, but reserves them the ability to do so for the contract's duration.

If they have upwards of 225-250K shooters, and a significant number of them are qualified to employ a rifle (and train/qual with one), 62 millions rounds of rifle ammo isn't going to go as far as some folks might think, especially if its split among training & duty.

I'd imagine they're taking into consideration any existing stocks that may have, and ordering to keep up an anticipated inventory level for continuing training, quals, duty and any exigent demands.

Getting either .223Rem or 5.56 has been continually difficult, or sporadic, to locate at the state and local levels for the last several years. Trying to get it for good prices to fit tight training budgets hasn't easy, either.

Then, there's the whole "quality/choice v. what's available" thing.

No it isn't that much. 62 million rounds / 250 thousand employees = 248 rounds each.

However, people like to freak out about big numbers so let the panic begin.

You guys need to relax on this subject. The police departments for average cities of decent size (ex: Denver, Cleveland, Atlanta, your pick) typically place orders in the millions of rounds. I know of one of these cities that goes through probably 2 million+ rounds annually.

So, are you really surprised to hear that DHS (with all of the agencies that fall under that banner) just ordered 69 million rounds of the most commonly used rifle cartridge in the country? Especially when you consider that this ammo is going to be used over time...

I'm not.

Hammer 059, did you really just say that? On The High Road?

I find your comment deeply, deeply disturbing.

It's the New Gun Control. It doesn't say anything in the 2nd Amendment about ammunition. Just think about how much a truck loaded with ammunition is worth today. And most of the drivers of those trucks are not allowed to carry a sidearm. The way our economy is going ammunition will probably be the new currency. Where are we going and why are we in this handbasket?

i forgot why it was i try to avoid internet forums....then i remembered.....its because of threads like this.....:banghead:

Don't be shocked. That sort of thinking is all too common on this forum.

I'm not worried in any case. I'm all stocked up for the Apocalypse. I think I must have at least 3, maybe 4, 20 round boxes of .223 stashed away;-)

Just because not everyone buys your misguided vision of what gun control should mean doesn't mean we're all eagerly awaiting armed insurrection either. Most of us, however, are open to the possibility that our government doesn't always necessarily have our besst interest at heart. That is hardly dangerous or unpatriotic, and IMO, isabout 100% the opposite of that.

I've been in "panic" buying mode for over forty-five years. I just call it maintaining my stock and scrounging for brass.
