I keep reading about Federal Government agencies buying large amounts I don't know if this is in addition to previous bid requests or a new one;

"DHS Contracted to Purchase 704 Million Rounds of Ammo Over Next 4 Years: 2,500 Rounds Per Officer.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is contracted to purchase 704,390,250 rounds of ammunition over the next four years, which is equal to a total of about 2,500 rounds per DHS agent per year, according to a January 2014 Government Accountability Office (GAO) report entitled Ammunition Purchases Have Declined Since 2009. “If DHS were to purchase all 704 million rounds over the next four years, and if they were used by 70,000 DHS agents and officers, it would be roughly 2,500 rounds per agent per year,” David Maurer, author of the GAO report, told CNSNews.com.

As of October 2013, the DHS had a total amount of 159 million ammunition rounds on hand in inventory...which when divided by the estimated number of DHS officers of 70,000, comes to about 2,271 rounds per agent."

I know in previous post the large contract bids have been explained on THR as needed for training but these numbers need another look especially if it is in addition to previously announced contracts.

Then you never had any extra issue ammo to sell to supplement your merger LEO salary?

Those DEA guys gotta have some extra income to just make ends meet. :D

Not really sure what your asking are you pointing out the 229 per unaccounted for? That's easy humans like their numbers nice and round and in factors of 5s so it got rounded and rounding up makes for a slightly better headline.

Are you an DHS Agent? If not, your post is irrelavent.
Nope...Just making a statement regarding my training or lack there off. Guess I should have been a DHS agent if I wanted to shoot more on the taxpayers dime....Thanks for the moderator work, though.

This has been covered pretty thoroughly in other threads. First of all, the buy is not a contract to purchase a fixed amount, but rather an option to buy an amount up to the stated amount over the stated time period.

Furthermore, in addition to providing training and issue ammo for DHS agents, DHS runs several large facilities that are available to any federal LEO--of which there are upwards of 150,000.

The DHS does not appear to be sharing its bounty with the DOJ.
The little LE league here has lost almost all its FBI participants because they do not have practice ammo allocated for a box or two a month in friendly competition with other LE, military, and concerned citizens.

Back during the Bush days (ah the nostalgia) during a military qualification we got 17,000 rounds to zero and qualify about 180 people. Now that was a great weekend.

I must be the lucky one here.

I work for a small department, and I probably shoot 2-2500 rounds per year in training.

My chief also rents a range and supplies guns and ammo for a family range day. Last year, my five kids ate almost a case of his ammo alone, along with the couple thousand rounds shot by everybody else's family.

2500 rounds per officer/per year sounds pretty reasonable.

The math:

2500 per year / 52 weeks = 48 rounds per week
2500 per year /12 months = 208 rounds per month.

they may not make it to the range once a week, but once a month might be realistic and I can see 200 rounds. That's only 4 boxes. I shoot at least that every time I go to the range.

2500 per person per year is not much at all. When you put all the 2500 numbers together it looks suspicious. I have two friends in the LE world and they tell me they shoot what they are allowed to each week which is 100 rounds. The Feds are not the problem. The problem is the people on Places like Armslist that are hoarder's. They are coming out like roaches in the dark on there trying to sell there 22lr, $50 a box. I flag them till the cows come home or they ban me, doesn't matter to me cause they are scum. Some of you will call it the American way....just business. Well the same to you too.....Get the guys standing in line to buy it all up to stay at home once in a while and it will get better. :banghead:
