Getting another H&K pistol...P2000 or P2000sk?

I am looking to buy another H&K pistol, but don't know which to get. I usually know what I want, but this time I'm having a tough time deciding.

I already have a USP .40 compact (V1). I love this gun more than anything, but I want to buy another H&K in the P2000 platform and with the LEM trigger. It will be used exclusively for IWB concealed carry, while the USP compact will remain a night stand gun since it has a manual safety. (I prefer no safety for a concealed carry gun, and a manual safety for a home defense gun) Also, I think the P2000 makes for a great IWB gun because it has a tapered slide, weighs a few ounces less than the USPc, and doesn't have the bulkier control levers like the USPc does.

The problem is I don't know whether to get a regular P2000 in .40s&w, or a P2000SK in 9mm (or maybe 40s&w). Both rounds are good man-stoppers these days, but the .40 has a slight edge. If I went with the P2000, I'd definitely go with .40s&w. However, if I go with the P2000SK, follow-up shots might be more difficult with the .40. In this case the 9mm would only offer 1 extra round over the .40 but it's the recoil of the .40 that has me concerned.

Then there is the issue of the 2-finger grip on the P2000SK. I would be using a flat, standard floorplate on the magazine which would leave a 2-finger grip. This leaves less to hold on to, but will reduce the chance of the grip printing during the summer months when I'm only wearing shorts and a T-shirt.

For those of you that have had experience with one of these guns (or both) in either caliber, what would you recommend and why? Has anyone actually shot the P2000SK chambered in .40s&w? I used to have a glock 27, but sold it for a glock 26 because I felt that the .40 was too much for such a small gun. Do you think I'll have the same problem with the P2000SK?

The P2000SK is a nice little pistol, but I think it's way over-priced compared to competitors.

I know people who buy H&Ks become fans for life, but I really don't think ergonomics, reliability, or accuracy are that much greater than other options. In fact, the trigger really gives it a disadvantage against other DA autos.

My biggest rant is that HK triggers are horrible. The P2000SK and USP compact DA trigger pull is horrendous. The redeeming feature of the USP is that it can be carried cocked-and-locked to get over the horrendous trigger. You cannot do this with the P2000 or P2000SK. I wouldn't be comfortable doing it anyway, but that's a personal preference.

I have heard the LEM trigger is great, but have no experience. If you can try it out with the LEM, it may help you make your decision. The P2000SK is much smaller than the USPc, and so if you are looking for a CCW the SK is a great choice.

The P2000SK that I have shot is 9mm. Recoil is perfectly manageable.

Are you set only on HK?

IMHO, the absolute top dog of CCWs today is the P2000SK. In either 9mm or .40, you'll have a very controllable platform for follow-on shots. The 9mm I carry gives me the ability to shoot faster, (and accurately), than any other gun I've used in my 33 years of carrying.

If you already have and use 9mm, then you may find it just a bit easier to shoot. If not, then IMO you should stay with the .40 because I believe you'll find the P2000sk easier to control than the USPc, however if the Glock was too much in .40 maybe that's an indicator to pay attention to.

I must disagree with SHusky57 concerning HK triggers. I find them very much to my liking. HK offers more trigger options than any other manufacturer. If you can't find one you like it, something's wrong. Different strokes ...

Besides a P7, I can't think of a better CCW than a P2000SK in LEM. I do agree with Shusky about the DA pull on the HKs, but the LEM is a different story altogether.

I have my P2000SK in 9mm and am very comfortable with that. The .40 would definitely put some more flip on the muzzle - to gain exactly how much in ballistics? (You also lose a bit of capacity with the 40SW.)

Remember you can also use P2000 mags with the SK and the X-Grip attachment. Works slick at the range!

I have a P2000SK LEM in .40. I find it to be one of the smoothest guns that I have shot. It is an extremely accurate gun. You know that you are shooting something, but I do not find it to be at all snappy, and muzzle climb has not prevented me from shooting some very tight "rapid fire" groups. I have not shot the 9mm, but below is my .40 with a P2000 Euro in 9mm.

BTW, as price and value invariably come up as an issue with HK, I will say that to me my P2000SK is worth every penny, and more.

I have a P2000SK in 9mm and have been thoroughly pleased. Although mine is DA/SA and not LEM, I find the trigger to be manageable as I have long ago adapted myself to the USP series. Recoil is noticeable, but nothing out of the ordinary. Quick follow up shots are no problem. It also has an ambidextrous slide release, which is a plus for some shooters.

My only complaint: I have small-medium sized hands, but even then I can just barely get a three finger grip with the extended magazine. This is okay with me, though, because it conceals considerably better than the HK USPc.

I have medium-large hands and have the same issue, but it has been resolved. I find that wrapping my pinky under the mag really helps and is quite comfortable. It also seems to give me more vertical control/stability. This may also be helping me control what some folks find to be a good amount of muzzle jump with the .40, which hasn't been an issue with me. I was going to try and find some flat floorplates but I have found that the standard floorplate tends to keep my pinky in the right position with the angle of the plate.

I have owned pretty much every other brand of polymer pistol out there. My USP .40 Compact (V1) is the only one that shines above the rest and leaves a smile on my face when I'm done shooting it. I really believe H&Ks are worth the extra money, which is why I'm willing to spend $800 on another one. I even got rid of all my Glocks (19 and 26) because I just don't shoot them well and don't enjoy shooting them like I do my H&K. (I even have my NIB Ultra Carry II for sale because I decided I want to carry a P2000 instead)

Anyways, I appreciate all the comments. I really think I want the P2000sk in 9mm. I could probably handle the .40, but I have boxes of 9mm ammo and no gun to shoot them with after selling both of my 9mm Glocks. I also believe in the 9mm as a good man-stopper.

USP9- Thank you so much for that link to Clyde's! You seriously helped me out so much..I was looking everywhere and couldn't find one in stock for a fair price. They have both the P2000sk 9mm V2, AND the P2000 .40 V2 in stock! This will be a tough decision. I'm leaning towards the sk though...

I ended up going with the P2000sk 9mm LEM. I placed the order with Clyde's. (Thanks to USP9)

It was $780 - 5%, which left $741. Add $30 for shipping then another 3% on the total cost ($23) to use a credit card and my total payment to them was $794.

Of course, I also just ran over to my local FFL dealer down the street and paid him $30 for his transfer service.

In all, OTD I paid $824. Not too bad considering Sportsman's Warehouse was going to charge me $860 + $60 in sales tax + $40 for shipping! Now all I have to do is change my holster order w/ TTgunleather to a P2000sk instead of a 3" 1911

I'm sure I will feel the same way. I just hope I went with the right caliber. I see nothing wrong with the 9mm, and I can always carry my USP.40 Compact in the winter months!

Dont mean to hijack the thread, but...

I'm looking at the regular HK P2000 (not the SK), which comes with both .40 S&W and .357 Sig barrels. It comes with 1 mag marked for .40 S&W, and 2 mags marked for .357 Sig.

I was under the impression that magazines for .40 S&W and .357 Sig were interchangable... Why would HK send different mags for each caliber?

My guess is that the plastic follower in the magazines vary slightly in design between the two.

I have the 357 and the 40 barrel and the mags are the same but marked different. Bty, the mag for the 2000 fits the SK...slap on an x grip....and got more rounds.

My P2000sk should be here Friday! I'm super excited to fondle it over the weekend, and hopefully shoot it too! I never thought a 2-day wait would be so tough..LOL.

I just wish I didn't have at least 2 months to go on this holster! Maybe I'll try and hunt down a nice holster that will work in the mean time...anybody have a used Sparks VM2 (P2000sk 1.5" loops) they want to sell me for under $100, even if it's heavily used???

Haha. I started this thread a year ago! Just took both of them to the range yesterday and put 200 rounds through each. Still no failures of any kind in either of these guns. I love love love them! My $600 tax return just came in and I'm about to order a USPf.45. I think it will be a nice addition to my H&K family...

I dunno if this is too ugly for you to perform on your own pistol.. but I've heard some ppl w/ real tools were able to make it look better

It makes it an all-finger gun for me instead of 2-finger
