Getting Ready For TS / Hurricane Fay

My prediction- very little damage. Mild. This is a responder to over 12 storms talking. At most some beach erosion and some localized flooding. The winds we are talking about here will be similar to one of the afternoon thunderstorms we get here all the time.

No reason for anyone here to freak out. There is a VERY big difference between a 70 mile per hour storm and a Katrina style 130 mile per hour storm.

Eh, I've got food for a couple weeks and plenty of water and other supplies, and don't think for a second I'll need any of it for this one. I'm a little concerned about my plants on the patio, but that's it. I'll probably fill up my truck on the way back from the range tonight, just out of general cautiousness (see, that was gun related!).

I'm in Pensacola. We're watching closely to see what it's gonna do. I'm getting my family prepared anyways. I'm a corrections officer and will probably be on the compound when the storm gets to our parts. This is almost as much fun as a root canal!
Just curious. What do they do with the prisoners during the storm? Lockdown?

I just got some ammo I ordered two weeks ago today. I had the AK out earlier to lube and get it ready just in case. The new neighbor (Mike) comes over with DD coffee and when he sees the AK the color left his face .LOL When he realized he was not going to be shot he relaxed and we start drinking the coffee. He asks "were you in the military or something"and I answer the "militia" and we discuss the 2nd Amendment. He thinks the Constitution is a "living document" that should be molded to the times, (Clinton). I tell him that I am an "originalist"and that our society should be shaped around the principles presented in the Constitution. He thinks that the police and military are the only ones "qualified" to handle and have weapons. I then tell him that the police do their best but are rarely right there when you need them. I told him of my long time friend who is a patrol deputy here and a big fan of CCW and the Castle doctrine. He has seen a lot of situations where had the victims been armed they would have fared much better than they did. I ask if he is aware of the recent Heller decision and he says not really. I fill him in on the Justice's decision and he seemed interested. I printed up some stuff from the NRA that I had re Heller and he took it. He and his wife are from Suffolk County NY. He is a retired accountant. He brought up the shooting on the LIRR (Colin Ferguson) and I commented it never would have gone as far as it did had a fellow passenger(s) been legally armed. He left with the material I gave him on Heller. They are coming over later for a pre hurricane BBQ. Will let you know how it goes.

I hope it moves more towards the East so that I can get more action. I’ve lived through 4 direct hits where I was in the eye of the storm and probably twice that many where I’ve experienced the outer fringes. One was a category 1 and 3 were cat 3s. The cat 3s were my favorites, but I’ve enjoyed every single one of them in one way or another.

This thing is a big nothing! But I guess that’s best for the vast majority of people out there.

Dan

Been through 4 of these already with Francis and Jean being the most memorable ones. Backend of Wilma held an unexpected surprize when the southbound cold front accellarated it.

This one is less likely to develop into anything of significance. The sooner it leaves the warm Gulf waters and come on land, the less powerful it is going to be.

If it tracks on more of a northern course and stays over the Gulf and the warm water longer, it might strengthen and any of the areas NW of Tampa might get a more powerful storm than currently forecast.

If it tracks N and then turn NE and comes on land in SW FL, it might come on land as a cat 1 and should then start slowing down back to TS very soon after.

Unload the Ak's and shotguns, Katrina or Andrew this ain't.

Sorry to spoil the fun but the end of the world isn't here yet, so mall ninjas put away your pajamas.

"The FEMA website has good information on storm prep, but they don't talk about firearms issues at all.

We've had members loose their whole collection to Mother Nature and we've had others preserve theirs. We've had members find out their insurance company wouldn't cover their guns and we've had others find they did, but under specific circumstances. While getting ready try to find out if your insurance company does cover your collection, video/image the whole collection for recovery/insurance reasons, work up some storage options to secure your guns against wind/water and figure out what you want to take if you have to evacuate."

+1 to all that. Thanks

Mall ninja? Please.

We have bottled water, canned food and a sturdy bed to hide under.
If there are looters about, my wife will protect me.
All is well.

You’ve obviously never been through a storm in a rural area. Here in the country even a minor trop storm can cause power outages for several hours, perhaps days. In fact, the power company turns off the juice before the storm arrives to lessen damage and prevent injury. A dark, isolated rural community with LE miles away is tempting to looters. I’ll be prepared all the same, thanks.

just moved to central Florida last week, this will be our first BIG storm, have a bunch of food and water, will be waiting to see what happens. LEN
Sorry, but this isn't a big storm. You are going to say, "that wasn't so bad", but don't get complacent. I'll never forget a co-worker describing Andrew; he said they were laying on the floor watching pieces of asphalt shingles fire through the exterior walls and lodge in the interior walls like bullets. I don't want to be there.

This isn't going to be a bad one. We are just making common sense preparation here at my place. I filled both cars with gas, and took stock of the water and food items. I'm not in "emergency mode" firearms wise. My .357 and j-frame .38 snub are loaded along with a couple of speedloaders for each, my Mossberg is loaded with extra rounds available in it's sidesaddle. Pretty much just a normal night firearms wise!

If they say it is going cat1 and heading into Tampa I may ramp things up a little, but I don't see that happening and neither, it seems, does anyone else.

For bad storms we always gather at my Mom's house which was built by my Grandfather in 1955. That house is built to take a pretty serious pounding. I usually keep my AK, Remington 870 and my .45's stored there along with the bulk of my ammo stash during the storm season. I just cleaned and lubed them all last weekend so, they are good to go if needed.

I just hope that my employer gets nervous enough to close shop tommorow or Wendsday so that I can spend the day drinking "hurricane beer" and watching the breeze blow. lol ;)

Mild?
We moved to Orlando Dec 2003, had no damage in the storms, but MILD! is OK as a wish, but not as an instruction.

Back on track, the pick up truck boys will be out and about, plywood on windows? No vehicles? the thieves will be active, if you are home, and dressed, good foot wear is a must while at home, go armed all the time, gun, extra mag, flashlight on belt. Lock blade on clip, we all carry them all the time anyway!

Copper is the big new precious metal, your A/C has a load of it! Keep an eye out.

We have a marked Security Vehicle (Jeep) when not working the odd drive around brings to light "Just looking for Auntie May" replies to "can I help you" comments. Only one way in or out helps as well.

Like I said- It was MILD. No need for the mall ninjas to break out the tactical golfcarts. The answer to every problem is NOT to break out the guns.

I had hoped this storm would at least be powerful enough to blow the pine needles off the top of my shed so I didn't have to climb up there and sweep them off this weekend.

No such luck...

Well, I could understand where you guys are coming from who live in the very rural areas, but I've lived in SoFla my whole life. It's very urban so a tropical storm poses next to no threat. I take only the most basic precautions until its starts getting into category 3 range. Then I start worrying.

FAY

Well! It is one heck of a tropical storm! Just stays and stays, swirls round and round, on patrol for 4 hours last night, rained and blowing! Small bushy trees down, tolls suspended! so the Thruway authority must think its bad, not giving money away seems to be their normal MO.

8AM at this time, the storm is still here, just swirling around, twice the width of Florida!! constant rain.

It is not going anywhere. Well we wanted rain... 10 inches?

Well Sister in Pine Island,Fla did ok , but son over in Melbourne got alot of rain but His home stayed dry. Hey Nimble 1 ever been to Auston's Diner/resturant . Tell them leo sent You and say Hi to Jackie Sue owner LOL.....WVleo

It still isn't that big of a deal. There is a limited amount of flooding, but in Florida that happens even during the summer. The majority of flooding is occurring in rural areas and a couple of trailer parks. Sure, we got rain, but in a normal summer, we get rain every day.

The last couple of years have been very dry, and we were in drought conditions until recently. The lakes were down, and we are still on water restrictions. (Because of the drought, we are only allowed to water lawns on a set schedule, depending on your address. Watering is only permitted 2 days a week) We needed the rain, and even with this storm, we are still below normal for rainfall this year.

That is why we have not seen any significant mosquitoes for the last couple of years. Our total rainfall deficit for the last two years is over 25 inches. This storm is averaging 12 inches (although some areas have gotten as much as 25) so we are still behind.
