I'm heading to Thailand next week; hopefully, the gf will get a chance to shoot a real gun there.

I asked her last night, do you remember anything I've taught you about guns?

She starts (in a naggy voice)

"FINGER OFF THAT TRIGGER!!"
"wATCH WHERE THAT MUZZLE IS POINTED!!"
"Something about a bullet in every gun or something close to that.."
"FINGER OFF THAT TRIGGER!!"

She said those where the 4 things she remember.. She said it's been a while, and she can't remember much of what I taught her, but she will (even in her deepest nightmares) remember finger off the trigger!

I consider that a win. Because, if she keeps her finger off the trigger, and the muzzle is never pointed at anybody, we are in a great ballpark as far as safety. Guns are always loaded etc.. She was close on that one.. Yes, very important... But I am glad, that everything I've taught her 6 month ago, she can't remember, but what she did glean, was finger off the trigger, and other basic safety rules.

I honestly couldn't ask for all that much more, we are going to go over everything again this week, but I just wanted to say; every female that I have ever taken shooting, remembers "Watch that Muzzle!! Finger off the trigger!!"

So I hope, this encourages everybody to teach someone to shoot; what you teach them, (breathing control, squeezing the trigger, grip etc..) they might not really remember, but we are in good territory as far as gun safety if they remember the safety rules.

Do the world a favor; convert a newbie to the dark side!! :D

While staying at my older brother's house recently, I gave him the full-fledged course, with classroom introduction, thorough immersement in the safety rules, unloaded dryfire practice, followed by 1-1/2 hours at the local indoor range with a small assortment of 3 pistols, and cleaning.

I don't know if Thai food is just called "food" there, but I'll ask!!

Skunk.. shakey hands.. Hmm. Difficult to cure.. but I will try.

FRONT SIGHT!! PRESS PRESS PRESS!!

FRONT SIGHT!! PRESS PRESS PRESS!!

triple-tap? What are you shooting with? 22 Short? :D

1) Guns are always loaded
2) Never point at anything you don't want to destroy
3) Watch your target, and whats behind it.
4) Finger off until ready to shoot

twoblink, you either have a keep-her for a girl friend, or you are the naggy one in the relationship. :p

Fro,

Last gf was a commie. Traded in a Commie for a more tactical upgrade :D

I'm going to be a lot poorer because of it, but only monetarily, not in happiness.

She's a big fan of Skunk's, she likes everything in all black...

Tactical and Cute! Give her a year and some toys, and she'll end up being something like a Taiwanese version of Runt hopefully :p

Both. Ever sit in a car with him for two hours listening to how the M1A is superior because of a low parts count over the AR15, and seen his Cowboy Logistics bloom from a random thought to the Cowboy War Planner he is now? :D

No.

But since I have a M1A and an AR15, I could argue either way, depending on my mood.

One thing about Cowboy shooting, where do you hang tact-lights and night vision optics? Seems to me that with 6 shots, you really want to be sure you hit with them. Solution? Laser grips. Though, after a few shots, the laser might be stopped by all that smoke. :neener:

Basic rules

twoblink,

some years ago I taught my son to shoot, and hammered the safety issues. I could watch him, and he would do just fine, but I was never certain how much he did on his own, or just because I was watching him CLOSELY.

When he was about 18 I told him I was going to trade in an old S&W pistol I had, and he said NO, I want to keep it. I told my wife, and she was uncertain, said "I don't know if he is ready."

So I gave him the gun in its case, zippered up, mag in place. He opens the case, immediately drops the mag out, racks the slide to ensure it is empty, (I already told him it was), but he checked anyway.

That told me he was ready more than anything else I could do.

Twoblink Knows not the true reason for the superiority of the m-1a.

the m-16 is a mere tool. one is like another. all are the same.

The m-1a has a soul. No m-1a is like another, each one is different. Well, that and it lobs 3 times the bullet weight around.

Want a battle rifle? Marlin 45-70 levergun with a long barrel and full-length mag tube. And a scout scope. OH ya. 540grain Garrett +P hardcast @ 1,600fps. Out past 200 yards, bullet drop gets crazy but in urban areas?

THAT is "cowboy tactical" :D

Oh my gosh Jim!!

Skunk was going to go 30-30 lever, I told him 45-70!! You read my mind!!

Cowboy logistics doesn't need lazer sights.. You shoot from the hip on instinct.. It's like "The Force", only with more dust ;)

Agree on the 45-70...gonna try to find a guide gun this weekend.

When I sent my gal this pic:

I got a verrry ugly phone call about "PAWS OFF THE TRIGGER!"

What could I say? She had a point.

Geez...

Marlin 1895CB, with a Scout scope, and AO peep sights, and hot 45/70 handloads would really do the trick.

Thats more than an ounce of lead for every pull of the trigger! More than 12 gauge slugs even.

Actually, its more smoke, if you use black powder loads.

Well, if you want, you can single load some 45/70 with spitzer or spitzer/boattail loads. That ought to keep the bullet drop in the single digits.

I was advising Skunky to get the Rossi Legacy in 454Casull, that way, you can shoot 45Colt and 454Casull, and have a 45Colt single action as the sidearm.

If I'm not mistaken, a 475Linebaugh is made out of the 45/70 case, but the diameter is all wrong. You can't shoot 475Linebaugh out of a 45/70 lever gun.

It is a nice thing to be able to shoot the same cartridge out of your longer gun. Simplifies logistics. Stock up on the sidearm ammo, and get a small stash of long gun ammo. If you run out of long gun ammo, you use the sidearm ammo with a decrease in performance, but at least you are still in the fight.

So out came the Ruger catalog.

Asked the gf which gun she liked.

Single shot revolvers with the pearl grip handles is what got the nod.

I have the coolest gf.

tell thailand i say hello,,,

and i hope to come back and visit again some day

incidentally, the beer there is 20% alcohol not the wimpy 6.8 you might be used to so watch yerself, 2 beers = about a six pack or so and will seriously kick yer booty for ya if youre not careful

and watch it, i don't think those were chicken eggs on my plate either, that morning way back when ...

:D

What a great thread. You people started off my Friday evening, well, with a smile.

Didn't feel that way when I got home. :(
