I want to add ghost ring sights to my Rem. HD 870. What are some good ones out there, and how much should it run with installation?

Looking at these websites the cost can be from $140 (~$170 w/shipping both ways) at Wilson for its TrakLock sights; to
$335 (~$385 w/shipping) to $435 (~$485 w/shipping) for LPA or MMC Tritium sights at VangComp.
The sights, alone, from Wilson, can be ~$115. Wow!; huh? It makes buying a 2nd shotgun sound like a good deal.
Being relatively new to shotgun ownership (within last 5 years) and knowing these costs, I bought my shotguns already with factory GRS's.

I have the Trijicon Trac-lock's on my 870 (previous owner paid for and installed them), and while they certainly work and are robust, I'd probably go for a set that had protected ears for the rear rather than the "naked" ring that the Trac-lock's have if I was going to purchase and install a set.

If I decided they were necessary at all that is, and having a 1300 that has just a bead, I'm not convinced they are (despite being a nice to have item).

FWIW.

Cruc

My 1st used 870 I bought for HD had a 26" barrel on it. I replaced it with a Remington 20" improved cylinder barrel w/ rifle sights. I can hit silhouettes at 100 yards w/ slugs.

Thought about ghost rings initially, but the price turned me off.

I think ghost rings make a shotgun more accurate but not as fast as a bead.
Anbody else think this?

The cheapest ghost-ring set I know is made by Mossberg for their 500-series shotguns - see here for details. It's only $63, and is of good quality. I've fitted this set to Mossbergs and Remingtons - you just need to drill & tap receiver holes in the Remington. Recommended.

Did you run into any problems with the elevation adjustment screw protruding into the thinner reciever of your 870?

I have a Mossberg 500 and like Preacherman I believe they are easily the best buy in ghost ring sights.
I got mine from a forum member for $25 but would have gladly paid the $60 for them.
the only thing I do not like is the hole is a tiny bit too big for my preference in a hunting gun (shooting slugs at deer), but as a defensive weapon the large hole is nice and fast.

Sir Lancelot, nothing's as fast as a bead. GRs are not much slower.

Much good work is still being done with beads.

i don't even have my beloved 870P yet (damn IRS refund is still 5 weeks out), but i'm starting with a plain bead (cause Dr. McC recommends it), and because i agree with crucible:

"I'd probably go for a set that had protected ears for the rear rather than the "naked" ring that the Trac-lock's have if I was going to purchase and install a set."

+1 on that.

If i add GR's later, i'm looking for something more like what the P'man suggested, those Mossberg GR's, but i hope to find one with wings AND a larger rear aperture. (Looks to me that the Wilson GR's have a small aperture.)

So far, these would be my choice, but i'd really rather have an even larger rear aperture.
