Giving in to Old Age

When my time's a little closer to over,I'm going to leave some of my little collection to one of my stepsons, provided he gives his brother a token sum of money for his share. One likes guns, the other would probably pawn anything I left him,si doing it like that saves him the trouble.A good number of them will be given to others who are less fortunate or are just starting out.Selfish as it sounds,I want to see someone's eyes light up when they get a surprise like a nice custom rifle when they've been using some kind of beater because that's all they can afford.

Thanks to all for your good wishes. I wish that my kids and all nephews/nieces were shooters. One nephew and grand nephew by marriage are...they got all my reloading gear/bench/brass/powder/primers/bullets and two rifles, the rest save one rifle at the end get sold.

I did get a kick out of my 19 y-o grand nephew; when he was 11, I taught him to reload and mentored him in producing some .30-06 Sprg hunting ammo that his dad used to bag an elk that year. The two of them could not have been happier then, so this year I gave them the shop and my Win 70 EW in 7mm RM and my Ruger African in 6.5x55 Swede (private sale w/ NICS checks). My way of paying it forward. Grand nephew wants to be a hunting and fishing guide and is going to MT this summer to apprentice...he'll get my rods/reels/gear and another rifle. Since he's 6'4 and growing, he can't have my waders (they won't fit) but can have my wading boots and neoprene socks which will fit...for the moment. They promised to send some game meat to me from this year's hunt and some fish from the 2022/2023 winter ice fishing escapades if I'm still around to cook and eat it. My only regrets are that my kids are vegetarian/vegan and vote Blue but my son has three surly dogs that'll piss on my grave so all will be right with the world at the end.

My best wishes to all. May you all find good hunting, fishing, and long-range targets that show your hits as well as health, long lives, sharp eyesight, and prosperity.

Harry

Thank you for sharing. My dad was down to two guns in the end, both revolvers. One had been his sidearm during a stint as a rural Colorado deputy in the eighties (the same period in which I was policing here in Florida) and the other is a snub made the same year in which I was born.

Those guns came home with me after W5HTW signed off for the last time the week of Christmas in 2010, in Torrance County, New Mexico. One of his buddies called me to tell me they would hold SK for him while I was out there that week.

A person never knows what will happen in life. I'm 78 years old and at the top of my game in deer hunting and enjoying life. I have been a deer hunter for over 56 years and things just seem to have come together in the past 20 years and I am strong for my age. I take every opportunity to help my friends who are struggling so they can get the most out of their outdoor experiences. I hunt with pre 64 Model 70 Winchester rifles and I plan to keep my favorite rifles until the day I die and I have a list of people each one is to be given to after my death. I'm giving them to younger hunters in rural western Oklahoma so the rifles can continue to be used. I thank God every day for the wind in my face, the cold in the winter, and sound of coyotes telling me dark is near and it's time to go home. When deer hunting conditions are right I can feel it in my bones and I can smell the hunt. I will never get too old to watch the sun come up each morning and set in the evening. Best wishes to Flatbush Harry, Patocazador and all of my older friends on the forum.

I used to think that way..

Then I was involved with a friend of mine's families after he passed away this January. Now I'm determined not to put my family through the same thing.

Last month I sold two guns, and I'm hoping to sell a 3rd this month or next. So, another 65 to go. Currently I'm only moving the stuff I have no use for and I could see myself getting down to 30 or so in a year or two. I'm using the money to upgrade a couple and go on a guided hunt this fall.
