Gonna get my first Nine. I can't buy both of these, so I'll have to settle between one of the two. Both are great contenders. I like the ergonomics of the Walther, more than the Glock. Then there's price point; the Glock being around $70-120 cheaper. Then there's the issue of aftermarket parts, which Glock tends to hold an advantage in. Should I be concerned about the P99's post S&W version?

I know that ultimiately I have to purchase what I will enjoy shooting. But I'd like to hear one more round of opinions between these two fine pieces. I'm kind of on the fence on this one.

What would be YOUR choice between them, and why? Have another suggestions? Go ahead.

I owned a Glock 19 at one time and will never think of buying another. Accuracy was all over the place, and was not as reliable as I wished it to be. I think I obtained a dud, but the experience soured me on Glock.

Now i own four Walther P99's in AS, and would not give them up for anything. They do not need aftermarket parts to be "perfection." I can't say the same for any Glock I have ever encountered.

I wasn't implying that availability of aftermarket parts makes a gun superior to another, I was just stating that I have more options to play with later.

What do you like about your P99's over your Glock?

I have a Glock 19 and just bought a Glock 26. I would get the 19 before the 17. I have read of Glocks going 20,000-30,000 rounds with no problems. They are easy to break down and clean and parts are readily available. Come visit the Glock Club Thread ans see what other Gock owners say. Glock is also endorsed by Gunny R. Lee Ermey. There must be a reason other than being paid for it he obviously believes in the Glock.

The found the P99 to be extremely accurate and mine have been 100% reliable. The P99 is customizable to the shooter, with interchangeable back straps, and a ambidextious magazine release. There are also models with an ambi slide stop, if you can find them. The P99 is also available in three triger systems (AS, QA, or DAO) and offers two cailibers (9mmx19 and 40SW).

I also favor the DA/SA trigger system of the AS. I have the choice of carry modes (DA/SA, not decocked AS/SA, or not decocked with the trigger to the rear SA).

I am a member of a executive protection team, and at the begining of the year, we all switched over the the P99 as our standard sidearm. Formerly it was a group using Walthers, Sigs, Glocks, and Beretta. Now purely Walthers.

I think the best Glocks are their 9mm ones and the 19 is the cream of that crop :D I like the size, the grip, pointability and the way it shoots. The trigger takes some getting use to, but its fine. Also, from a CA point of view the mid size frame is the right size to carry 10 rounds

The P99 is basically a re-engineered Glock 19.

Walther hired former Glock and Steyr engineer Horst Wesp, and combined him with thier own expert craftsmen and Cesare Morini (Olympic pistol grip designer extraordinaire) to create the P99.

The result is a pistol that is every bit as reliable a a Glock, every bit as rust resistant and maintenance free, and a little more accurate (Walther barrels rule).

The grip is simply perfect (for 99% of shooters anyway) thanks to the ergonomics input from Morini.

The trigger reset is as short and crisp as one could ask for on a ~$500 gun.

The mag release is one of a very few properly designed out there. If you've ever bumped a wall with your thumb in the wrong spot, you'd understand.

I had a Glock 19. I loved it.

Now I have a P99, and between it and my wife, it's a toss-up as to which I love more. It's that good.

In short, the P99 is what the Glock wants to be when it grows up.

Edited to add:
*In all fairness to Glock, their pistol does exhibit less muzzle flip, though the grip and trigger of the P99 more than make up for that in terms of split times between accurate shots. It's all personal preference, but I'd shoot them side by side to really understand the difference before I bought either if I were you. Some people actually like the Glock grip (never again for me though).

I would get the 19 before the 17.

Because the 19 is just a little shorter and easier to conceal. I think it is the cream of the crop. It is the best fit for my hand. The only modification I have made is to change the trigger pull from #5 to #3.5, it make it feel more like my 1911's.

However you can't go wrong with the 19 or 17. Glocks IMHO are teh best most reliable most indestructible hand guns made. They're not pretty but they are accurate and reliable, everything you want in a semi-auto handgun.

Well I took the plunge and picked up an Glock 17.
The P99, but in .40 is still on my radar though.

I think you'll be well served with the Glock.. I'm a big Walther P99 fan, but I think most modern quality poly's will serve you well.. It's more a matter of what fits your hand and wallet at the time.

I would suggest that from what I've read the Walther P99's were designed around the 9mm round, and the only negatives I've ever read about P99's involved the 40cal model. Even those problems I think were mag related, not a pistol problem.

My P99c/AS and P99/AS in 9mm are fantasic pistols. Perhaps later on you can check 'em out..

Best Wishes,

J. Pomeroy

Go check out the Walther section at www.handgunforum.net - tons of P99 fanatics there.

As for the S&W thing - P99s are 100% german Walther - same as they always were - they are only IMPORTED by S&W.

Now, the PPKs ARE made by S&W for Walther, but thats an entirely different gun.

US law requires the importer's name to be on the gun if imported by someone besides the manufacturer - hence the S&W on the side of the slide.

P99 is the best 9mm ever made, IMHO. I gave up buying expensive 1911s because I always shoot my P99 better.

For me personally, my first choice of the options listed would be a P-99 Anti-Stress, followed by the Glock 19 and then the 17.

I haven't shot the other Walther trigger options, but consider the AS to be the best striker fired trigger I've fired -- but then I do like DA/SA pistols over DAO set ups.

The Glock 19 is probably the only Glock model I'd consider owning -- good size for CCW, but still big enough to do a service pistol kind of job. I also find the 19's grip able to feel more natural in my hand than the Glock 17 (which may just be me being irrational, but they do seem to point differently for me).

The 17 I do not especially care for, due to the previously mentioned grip angle.
