I'm looking at buying my first Glock and my preference is for the larger size models like the 17/22 or 34/35. I like the .40 for it's ability to be converted to other ammo like .357 Sig and 9mm, but I'd like to know from those here what they think is a better model: the 22 or the 35 and why?

EDIT: BTW, I'm not going to use this as a concealed carry gun.

If you're going to carry it, I would recommend the 22 over the 35. If it's gonna be a range toy you might as well just go for the gusto and get yourself a 24.

Do you have any other pistols in 9mm/.40 that are similarly sized or mostly smaller? I would be inclined to go for the 22, because I believe it would be a bit more versitile.

Currently, my pistols include a G19, a SW shield, and a P22. I kind of want a bigger pistol, either a G22 or G34. For me, I kind of see a G17 as redundant compared to what I already have. A G34 is different enough from the 19 the justify it. Maybe my scenario is similar to yours?

I'm not a Glock guy, but I read a Tom Givens (Rangemaster Training http://rangemaster.com ) post in another forum where he talk's about his transition from the 1911 to Glock ("the 1911 is a one bad guy gun in a three to four bad guy world"). He said he initially started with a G23 thinking it would emulate his 1911 Commander, a gun he loved. He hated it. He then went to a G22. It was better, but still didn't care much for it. He then got a G35 and has been carrying it ever since.

I believe he uses a JM Custom Kydex IWB holster for carry. http://www.jmcustomkydex.com/p/IWB3.html

Kinda sorta.

If I wanted to downsize to a smaller size, it would be relatively easy to buy a used G19 for a few hundred dollars and I'd still have the G35 as a larger pistol.

Larry Vickers on the other hand, has commented he doesn't care for the G34/G35 guns as much since he doesn't like the open slots in the slide.

I'll just bet if you look hard enough, you'll find Larry Vickers recommending a ported Glock too...

Agreed
The 17/34 22/35 debate really boils down to whether you prefer a belt holster gun or a slightly shorter belt holster gun.

The smaller Glocks usually make the best everyday CCW pistols.

17 can be concealed IWB. The 34 is not as easy. The 34 comes with adjustable sights and 3.5 pound trigger connector as standard. The flipside is that the factory sights are mediocre and should be swapped out and the 3.5 pound connector is an easy swap. The longer sight radius on the 34 does help.

My take would be 17 or 22 for carry, 34 or 35 for gun games. I have well over 20,000 rounds through my G17. I have shot the 26, 27, 19, 21, 22, 34, 35 & 17L.

In the subject guns & calibers, I have/had a G17gens3&4; G34gen3; G22gens2,3,4; G35gen3; and a G31gen3.

I don't care for versatility and prefer choosing, shooting, or carrying the right gun for the purpose at hand.

I'd rather have a complete gun ready-to-go than to have barrels, magazines, ejectors, and sights for one caliber which all need to be installed along with bringing the correct ammo to the range or carried. Reliability can vary with aftermarket barrels or a given Glock could be completely reliable with a conversion barrel. Only spending the money and trying it will determine that reliability. Entire slide assemblies can also be bought/put together for the G22/G35 guns, although Glock doesn't sell just a slide directly to customer.

The longer G34/G35 wasn't too much of a bother compared to the G17/G22 for carrying, usually inside the waistband. The slide is 1" longer and you may want something shorter. I do usually carry my G19gen3 most of the time.

I don't worry about the open slide cut of the G34/G35. In an urban setting or at the range, I wasn't using these guns in dirt, sand, or gravel to any extent. I also carry a backup gun, however. For my LEO work, I'm now issued and must carry the G17gen4. If carrying my G34gen3, it's off duty or I'm just enjoying shooting it at the range.

My department switched from .40 to 9mm and I sold off my G22 and G35 guns for lack of use or interest. They were just taking up space in my safe. I still have a G23gen3 as my last .40 gun should I want to shoot that caliber.

A note on the G34/G35. Glock typically has two versions which may be stocked by a dealer. The standard commercial version will have a "MINUS" or 4.5 pound connector and an adjustable rear sight.

A "Blue Label" version will have a 5.5 pound connector and fixed sights. That's the way it was with the G35gen3. I suspect it'll be the same with a Gen4 version. My dealer's website indicates the G35gen4 "Blue Label" has an adjustable rear sight, but the website could be in error regarding that rear sight.

Agree, it not much harder to coceal the 34 over the 17.

Just for ha ha I coneceal carried my 34 w/RDS. Didn't feel any different than my 17.

Amazing how many big time back in the day 1911 proponents (Chuck Taylor, Ken Hackathorn, Larry Vickers, Tom Givens, and a few others) are now advocating and carrying Glocks.

I like the 17/22 over the 34/35.

Just my .02,

I started my quest looking for a 19 for my carry gun but ended up buying a used 23. Ordered a Bar-sto 9mm barrel for it and had grip work done to it. Then I stumbled across a 17 with a grip that had been professionally re-cut to the size of a 19 grip and then re-textured. It is nice having the 17 length slide and longer barrel with the smaller 19 grip. I (me) wouldn't carry anything longer than the 17.

I did have a 17L at one point......that was not a comfortable carry gun, guess it was never intended be one either. LOL

The 34/35 is the same length as a full size (5") 1911, they're not hard to conceal. I think they look better/cooler and they shoot great and make for fantastic home defense choices. I like my G35 Gen4 fine, I have a 6" KKM .40 barrel for it that will throw 180gr JHP over 1375 fps and a 6" 357 SIG barrel that will throw 158gr XTP's (.357") over 1450 fps. Oh, and I have a LW 9mm barrel to shoot 9mm out of.

It's an awesome gun.
