I am a realitvly new gun owner. I own a 24/7 pro .45.
I want to get a 9mm next. I think I have it narrowed down to a glock 17 or a XD 9mm. I wanted to see if anyone may offer some advice, or have any other ideas on a good solid 9mm semi-auto.

Thanks in advance.

I highly doubt you will get any suggestions or imput on this one, kdubya.

Regards,

Stinger

Just do a search and you'll find a million or so threads/arguments about Glock vs XD. Both are well built and reliable. It's really a matter of personal taste as they have different grip angles, different triggers, and different philosophies on the use of manual safeties (the XD has a grip safety and the Glock does not).

Glocks are fine guns, but I prefer the XD. I have an XD9 and an XD40 and they're the two most reliable handguns I own.

If it's between an XD and a Glock the XD wins on ergos & trigger; the Glock wins on finish durability, track record, and spares availability - Springfield has yet to make even basic spares for the XDs available to the general public, unlike Glock. Either pistol will you serve you well, and I doubt either will break without SEVERE abuse; so go with the one that fits you best.

In other areas the FN/Browning Hi-Power is an absolute masterpiece of a 9mm, the CZ-75B is one of the nicest autos I've handled and it has a relative bargain price of around $400, H&K and SIG both offer some very nice pistols in 9mm, The Beretta 92 is a bit bulky but a solid combat proven design, and the Ruger P-Series autos are built like tanks at a great price. Taurus also has some nice offerings in 9mm. Take a trip to your local funshop and see what pistols feel good in your hand. Tell us what you liked and we'll help you debate those options.

So, I gotta ask. Do you like the 24/7? I am curious for personal reasons. I really like some of the features, but have never handled one. If you like it why not just get a 24/7 in 9mm? I will also add that I am a huge Glock fan. I have a Hi Power, but never use it anymore since I bought the Glock 19.

I like my 24/7. It is a little picky as far as what ammo it likes. I have had luck with LawMan 230 gr. It shoot great, and has very little recoil.
The reason I don't want a 24/7 9 is that I want to try something new and it is also hard to find accesories and stuff for the 24/7.
The .45 I have will remain my main weapon for personal deffense, I want a 9 for target and also something my wife can handle a little better, she is small and the .45 is a little much for her.

Thanks everyone for your comments, I appreciate it

I have an XD-9 and an XD-45ACP.

Today I threw down the range some 250 rounds of various design and manufacture. Only one glitch--which turned out to be my misloading of a 9mm round in a two shot fast load and shoot. I didn't get the first round all the way in the mag before I stuck the second in. The first fed, the second failed to. My Bad on that one.

By now I have around 1000 of 9mm and my 45 is new, it only has 100 rounds thru it as I just bought it Friday.

Gee, Asking for opinions on the G17 vs XD9 is almost like asking to start a war. Everyone will have their own reasons and preferences as to why theirs is the best and no one will consede to the others opinion.

It is best to say that you will need to go out and try each one and buy the one you like. They are both good guns....

I have a G17.... Why, because I bought it 6 years ago prior to the XD. At that time it was the best High Cap gun around. It has never failed me yet... I know that I must have over 5,000 rounds through it and I purchased it used.... Grip angle is different, trigger is different, and safety is different...

again get the one you like, go to a range that rents guns and bang away...

Well I would say that i am qualified to write an opinion on the matter, because i own both, an xd and Glock. so i will give you what i think!

i have a glock 19,
with safari land leather paddle holster
3.5lb disconnect
extended slide release
xs 24/7 big dot sights

and an xd 4" service model in .40!
Fobus roto holster
couple extra mags
pretty much stock!

pro's of xd............
1) i personally prefer the three dot combat sights to the glocks standard sights
2) the sights are metal on the xd and not on the Glock.
3) i prefer the grip angle on the xd, feels more natural and points better for me!
4) i really like the grip palm safety on the glock
5) the cocked indicator is a nice addition.
6) is a little cheaper in price
7) can use lead loads/ reloads in the xd.
8) and finally, i prefer the stock xd trigger to the glock trigger.

Pro's of the glock.
1) More calibers to choose from
2) more frame sizes ie.... single stack (glock 36)
3) less expensive magazines
4) I like the finger groves, it is a little easier to hold onto in wet weather.
5) tennifer finish is great and have had zero wear on the slide, holds up real well.
6) accessories out the ying-yang, they make everything you can think of, because they have been around for so long!

2000rds + in the xd, factory of all kinds, reloads etc!
600rds + in my glock , and 1000's in various other glocks,
i like the glock but for some reason i am still in love with the xd, maybe it will change but the xd is my favorite as of now!But with the upgrades to the glock that i have made it is a real fine line between the two. Hope this helps.

Make it easy on yourself: go to a shop that has both and hold them both. If possible, rent and shoot them both. Pick the one that feels better to you. Both are very reliable pistols.

My personal pick is the XD. YMMV.

GOOD LUCK

This is going to be all up to you my friend. It has been a question with way too many answers and arguement's. In my opinion i prefer the Glock. Both are fine guns and have good background's. If you take a poll you might find that more people like the xd because of it's grip. I know alot of 1911 guy's like it because of the safety grip. They both should do the trick for recreational use. I myself depend on the Glock for defense and my life. I have put over 60,000 round's through my Glock (that's right 60,000 round's-see why i am so loyal).I feel that the Glock just has a longer reputation and has been trusted by more law enforcement officer's than the xd. Now that might change in the future seeing that Glock's really have not done a whole lot of new thing's to there weapon's. But i like the old saying if it ain't broke don't fix it just upgrade. I am sure you will enjoy either one. Or maybe you can get both.

If i remember correctly, the grip angle on the 24/7 is similar to the XD and different than the Glock. Put your hands on both, they are easy enough to find in gun stores. Pick the one that fits your hand better and has a more agreeable grip angle.

I'll take the Glock. Cheap, good track record, easy to maintain and can be found everywhere. I'll then choose the Steyr because of the way it fits my hand and its shootability. I like the XD but I can't seem to find the parts I'll need.

Go to a gun store and handle both. If possible, visit a range where you can rent both for a session. Pick the one that fits your hand best. The XD pistols don't get along with me, but you don't have my hands.

Just bought an XD9 to go with my XD40 Tactical. Great gun. If you can, at least handle both the Glock and the XD. I don't like Glocks because I can't shoot them well. Had the same problem with my Ruger 345. It's about what ever works best for you. Either one is a great choice. Glock has a great track record and Springfield is creating a great track record. The XD hasn't been around as long, but it has been around longer than most think.

Isn't the XD grip frame the same angle as a 1911? Maybe it was rumor.

As far as i know you are right, if it ain't the same it is darn close, but i am pretty sure that the xd grip angle is at 13 degrees! one main reason i like the xd so much!feels great!
