I have a 2nd Gen Glock 17L. Recently I have begun to experience a number of FTFs. I have tried multiple types of ammo and multiple magazines. The gun has not been modified in any way.

I took it out yesterday and nearly every round was a FTF. It was like the round was only getting halfway into the chamber from the magazine.

I have several Glocks and have never had this type of issue with any of them. I'm not limp wristing it.... Any ideas as to whats going on?

Have you cleaned the barrel & chamber with a bore brush recently?
Have you cleaned and oiled the gun recently?
Both should help.

Going further, it could be ammo related if you have changed bullet styles or brand of ammo.

Or it could be a bad magazine or weak magazine spring.
Tried a different magazine?

Or weak recoil spring with not enough power to fully drive the slide into battery.
Replace the recoil spring assembly.

The gun is clean.
I tried multiple types of ammo.
Also tried multiple mags of varying ages.
I have not tried replacing the recoil spring.... Does a 17L use the standard size recoil spring? Where is best place to buy a recoil spring?

Thanks

Call Glock and tell them your recoil spring assembly is worn and they will most likely send you a new one. Yes, it uses a standard fullsize RSA.

Weak mag springs or

Weak recoil spring or

Weak ammo or

Any combo.

Someone on Glock Talk suggested a recoil spring test they found on youtube. I did the test and the results were fine. I really don't think it is a mag issue as I tried multiple mags. Also the gun is clean and unmodified.

One thing I failed to mention is that it is difficult to remove the slide from the frame. I have several Glocks, and this one is really tough. Hard to get the tabs on each side down so I can get the slide off. Not sure if that is related.....

Recoil spring would be my first thought, especially if the gun has had more than 5,000 rounds or so. A Glock factory recoil spring from Midway is $8, so it's probably worth a try.

if removing the slide is difficult, and the tabs are giving you grief for disassembly, check the front rails on the frame and also check the rails on the slide for peening. I suspect you might have either a loose frame rail insert or a burr thats sucking up all of your slide force.

The rails look fine. I compared them to the rails on some of my other Glock frames. Everything looks the same....

Someone on Glocktalk recommended I try to install the empty slide (no barrel, no recoil spring assembly) onto the frame. The slide installed and was removed easily without the barrel and recoil spring assembly.

I assume this narrows the issue down a bit...

If you or a friend has a G17/G22/G24/G31/G34/G35, try the recoil rod assembly from it in your G17L and see if the issue continues or not. If you still have the issue and either you or friend has a G17 or a G34 (or another G17L), try putting your G17L complete upper (slide, barrel, recoil rod, etc.) on the G17 or G34's frame and see if the issue remains or not. If the issue remains it has to be somewhere in your silde/barrel upper, if the issue goes away, then the issue is most likely somewhere in your G17L's frame/lower. You can also try just putting your G17L's barrel into your or friend's G17 or G34 and see if the issue remains or disappears. I'm starting to wonder if you are having some kind of issue with either the barrel's locking lugs or the frame's locking block itself (have heard of locking blocks cracking years ago (1st and 2nd Gen Glocks)). If finding another G17/G17L/G34 to test with is not possible, your last resort is of course calling Glock and arranging to ship them the firearm to have them work on it. Hope this helps.

I would take a drive over to Glock if it is local or close to you. I am a regular over at GT and there have been several people talk about stopping in for a once over of their pistol. Always heard positive feedback. Shouldn't cost you anything but time and gas .

Maybe the magazine catch in the frame is worn, letting the mags down slightly.
Does your slide always lock back on an empty mag?

In the past I have had a few times where the slide would not lock back on the last round.

Currently, I don't think I could test it as nearly every round is a FTF....

I am considering a drive over to Glock. Its about 20 miles....

No wonder it won't work. Oil it.

Running 'em dry causes premature wear on parts, as well as malfunctions...

Yep going to Glock is the thing to do...

I sent my 1988 17L in a few years ago to have it gone through and tuned up with all the new items it needed...Only cost me shipping one way, they sent back via Fed Express overnight, for no cost to me:D

I sent them the L slide (and the Std one I picked up years later off of E-bay before they went anti firearms)...Both gone over and sent back...

Great firearm...

Regards
