ok guys. I have a decision to make here. I have a good deal for a Glock 19 2nd generation and another fair deal on the same gun but 3rd generation. Any advantages on one aver the other one besides the rail and the finger grips?

I personally like the feel of the finger grips, but didn't the 2nd gen have finger grips too? If that's the case, I would guess it comes down to how likely are you to add a light/laser to the gun. That's assuming the guns are in comparable condition.

Later,
Chrome...

That's pretty much it. Keep in mind the subcompacts have no rail in the 3rd gens. Just get whichever one feels better in your hand (or whichever is cheaper if they feel no different). Some people like the finger grooves, some hate them, depending on the size of their booger-hooks.

This site has a plethora of Glock info:

I believe the finger grooves came as an improvement w/ the 3rd gen  Now mind you, the 19 is the only one that feels like the grooves work for me, but if the grooves are an issue for you, go w/ the 2nd gen & save a efw $$ while you're at it.

If I could have my way I would take a Glock with the rail and no finger grooves... There is no real advantage with the 3rd gen. They modified the internal rails to accomodate for a mounted light, but it has no affect with the light. You said it was a "fair" deal on the 3rd gen. That would be my answer, go with the good deal over the fair deal.

As a matter of age only, be sure to check for excessive wear on either gun. Also check the mags and make sure they are the newer style.

Again, no real advantage.

I have both, and either one works for me, although I shoot the 2G more often albeit for no particular reason. That just seems to be the one I grab on the way to the range. I do have 4000+ rounds through the 3G, tho'.

There were changes related to the extractor in the 3G but I don't know exactly why they were done. The cut in the slide to accommodate the extractor was changed to a 15 degree angle in the 3G from the 90 degree in the 2G, in addition to the extractor as LCI. Also, my 3G has a 3-pin frame and the 2G has a two-pin frame, with corresponding changes to the locking block. I can't think of any other changes off the top of my head other than the finger grooves.

If I were making this decision today and since the finger grooves are comfortable I would go with the 3G, although you probably can't go wrong with either IMO.

I have a 2nd generation G19 and I prefer the feel over the finger groove frames.
2nd Generation no finger groove Large frame G20 and G21 frames feel much better in my hand than finger groove frames, especially on the larger guns.

I wouldn't mind seeing Glocks with no finger grooves and all the other upgrades offered.
