Im trying to decide on which one to get. i know the glock is very reliable but it seems the ruger is also, plus its alot cheaper. what are the pros and cons of each? would u recc. i just save and pick up the good ol' 19?

Don't own a Glock 19, but I own a Glock 17 and a Ruger P95.

The Glock is slimmer (at least it feels that way). I also like the trigger better on the Glock as it has no change between 1st and subsequent pulls.

Both have horrendous sights out of the box.

The Ruger's default mag size is 15 rounds which matches the Glock 19, but Mec-gar makes flush-fit P95 mags that hold 17 rounds so you have the potential for higher capacity in the P95 (if you insist on flush fit mags).

That's the pro-Glock things. When it comes down to it though, when it comes to reliability I would put the Ruger absolutely in the same category. It flat out works and works 100% of the time. It also costs a good bit less.

If I was on a budget and wanted a handgun right now, I'd probably opt for the P95 - which is actually what I did as I bought that as my first handgun 9 years ago when I was still in college. I simply couldn't have afforded anything more. Still have the gun and will never sell it :).

Of course, IMHO - the Ruger SR9 is a more apt comparison to a Glock. I don't own one of those, but have shot it and personally I'd opt for that for just a little extra over the P95 but still less $$$ than the Glock.

well you are comparing a full sized hammer fired pistol to a compact striker fired pistol... apples and pickup trucks difference.

lol i understand that, but size wise its closer to the 19 then the 17... at least from what i see

I currently have a Glock 19, and used to have a Ruger P95. The Glock is a little sleeker, and has a consistent trigger pull. Easy to work on.
The Ruger is a little clunkier, most have a decocker or safety if you like that, I think they do have a DAO option as well.
I settled on the Glock, but really the Ruger is a fine pistol as well, less expensive as you've noted.
Both my Glock, and the Ruger, were 100% reliable, no difference.
If the money makes a difference, the Ruger will do fine.
Which one feels better in your hands?

Have you shot both? Truth be told it is dumb to go buy whatever gun someone on the internet tells you to get. We can tell you the differences, our personal preferences, etc., but only you can tell which one you like better.

Well I've shot the 19 many times and although I do like the 17 better, it's just to big. I've rented the p95 at my local range and after about 20 round it just wouldn't feed. Even called the range master and he took a look at it and took it off the display for repairs. They did mention it had gone through thousands of rounds obviously, but so has the Glock and that NEVER gave me Any problems. So as far as reliabilty goes, maybe I decided to rent the ruger on the wrong day which kinda threw me off a bit. Money is a bit of an issue, and I do like the looks of the ruger more then the glock, but after seeing what happended I just can't make up my mind.

If those are your only two options, get the Glock.

While the Ruger P series are pretty good pistols, I have seen the occasional dud.

My friend bought one that had feed problems. He sent it back to Ruger and they fixed it but he's since lost confidence that it will work when he needs it most.

The Glock 19's and 17's are excellent postols with mild recoil, good accuracy and legendary reliability.

It is also extremely easy to purchase parts and upgrades for the Glock pistols.
Not so much with the Ruger P series.

Truth be told. The P series is on its way out, being replaced by newer more sleek Ruger semi autos.
The Glocks though are here to stay.

I have owned a P95, many years ago and while it gave me no problems, I just didn't like the ergonomics. It just never quite felt right in my hands.

On the other hand, I own many different Glocks and shoot competitively with a 17 & 22.

I have both a Glock 19 and a Ruger P95. I personally like the Glock better. It's way easier to conceal, has a better/more consistent trigger pull, a solid track record with more law enforcement agencies and militarys, easier to field strip, easier to find reliable higher capacity magazines for and you can easily find accessories for it if you choose to do so. That being said, IMO the Ruger P95 is the best full sized 9mm going for $300 brand new. Both should serve you well, I just prefer the Glock.

Unfortunately it's nearly impossible to carry concealed in California, so it will be mainly plinking, home defense, and at my place of work (which is legal in Cali). The plink/HD part says 17 all day... But since i plan on having it at my place of work, I'm leaning towards the 19. Once again....I'm stuck deciding!

I've had the P95 for years, have never failed to have it go bang. An excellent American made product. I'd buy it again!:)

If both cost exactly the same $, I'd buy the Glock. I'm used to the platform and I love the 19. If I was being cost conscious, I would not hesitate to buy that Ruger. No other (except for maybe a Sigma) competes at the <$300 mark.

I am not a big Glock guy, but think they make a good gun. I also believe Ruger is very much under rated.

But given this choice, unless there are some subjective reasons the OP does not talk about, like my own reasons for not being a fanboy for the Glock, I would recommend the Glock 19.

Get the Glock, can hardly go wrong. This all assumes that the gun fits you and your mission for the new weapon.

Only you can write your own mission statement. (AKA: What do I want from a new handgun and why? In the end only person you have to satisfy is yourself.)

No real bad choices here. Good luck.
