My Glock 21 has developed a problem that I noticed last time I shot it. The slide lock now engages randomly through magazines and once engaged must be manually disengaged by manipulating the lever with my thumb. Racking the slide doesn't release it either . There's no upward pressure being applied and it acts the same with the gun empty. I don't want to start ordering parts until I check that there isn't an easy fix.

Perhaps you were not careful about re-installing the slide stop last time you took the pistol apart? What you describe happens with the slide-stop spring has not been placed properly during re-installation.

Alternatively, the spring may have broken.

What Loosedhorse said.

And it's easy to damage that spring during reassembly. It's a cheap part to replace. Pick up a fresh trigger spring and takedown lever while you're ordering Glock parts.

With the slide off the frame and magazine removed, press up on the slide catch, let it go, and it should snap down on its own. Likewise with the frame inverted. If it does not do this, either something is seriously binding the lever, or much more likely, the spring is not right for some reason.

Also check to make sure you are not pressing up on it with your thumb during firing with your normal grip.

I'll check on it like you all said. I recently purchased a takedown tool and probaly assembled wrong. I'll fill you all in.
