I just purchased a new Glock 21 (45 ACP) and I think that the slide release is not working properly. It is very difficult to release the slide. I have use the tip of my thumb and push down at a 90 degree angle to get it work. I briefly owned a Glock 17 and I know that the releases were small, but, if I recall, were not that difficult to operate. When I mentioned it to the dealer I purchased it from, he said that he didn’t notice a problem.

What does everyone else think?

This sounds typical. Eventually you will get used to it as I did with my G19, or you can purchase an aftermarket extended slide stop. European manufacturers are not big on tripping the slide stop to release a locked back slide, nor free-dropping magazines. (Glock magazines originally did not fall free; this feature was added later.)

it is probably tight because it is new...and it is a slide stop lever (that's why it's small) and you could use the at least at one time recommended by GLOCK "slingshot" method of releasing the slide...works for me...

Many years ago in Glock Armorer's school they specifically recommended the "slingshot" release rather than using the slide stop lever. Kind of explains the reason it is so small...they didn't expect people to use it to release the slide.

Any chance it is hard to operate because you have an empty magazine in the gun?

If so, you are fighting the mag spring tension.

As stated before, that is not a slide release, rather a slide stop. It was never intended to be used to release the slide.

Grasp the slide in the hand, pull to the rear, and let 'er fly forward.
