im looking for some opinions on the glock 21! considering a new 45 and i love my glock 17 but am unfamiliar with the g21...

This is just my experience...

Grip is a little wider than the 17. I've got small hands but others with larger hands like it more. 13rd magazine capacity is nice.

The gun seemed a bit less forgiving in recoil than a 17, having said that
I haven't had any faults (only witnessed others).

Great Gun

I have a 21 SF and love it. The recoil isn't bad and the gun shoots great! I've had it for about a year now, about 3,000 rounds through it without one failure.

I like mine well enough. Not as accurate as my 1911's, but good enough for its purpose. If you like the 17 it will be familiar, but is much thicker. If you have smaller hands it may not work for you. I would look at the 21SF with the smaller grip. Even though my hands are on the large side and I have no trouble with the regular 21, if I were buying now I would probably go with the 21SF.

If you are worried about the grip size, get the 21 SF. I have both, but the SF is considerably a better fit.

The G21 is one of the best guns on the market.

A friend of mine was buying Glock 21 a year or so ago and that is when I first became aware of the "SF" model. It makes a big difference for me. When I was in the market recently, I decided on a Glock 30 SF and it feels very good in my average to smaller hand.

Mine was plenty reliable and pretty accurate to boot. It was a softer shooter than my G17, and way less recoil than my G22. I did end up selling it, though, because it was just too big for my little hands. I'm interested in getting another if I could pick up a G21SF for a reasonable price.

To me the Glock is superior to the Sig and the HK, for several reasons.

Reliability of Glock, Sig, and HK is the same, so that is a wash.

Target accuracy might be better with Sig or HK, but Glock has very good accuracy also, and for practical purposes, there will be no significant difference. By that, I mean that if you ever have to use your Glock for self defense, it will be plenty accurate to handle the job.

The Glock finish is tougher and more durable than Sig and HK.

You can pretty much be your own gunsmith if you buy a Glock and have internet access. Youtube.com has videos that pretty much cover everything.

The Sig 220, while a nicely made weapon, has a high bore axis, and low capacity.

I can see no improvement with the HK that justifies its price over the Glock.

I agree with everything you said there Balrog except that you may find the ergonomics and accuracy of the new(ish) H&K 45 worth it enough to justify the price difference. Then again you may not. I would take a Glock over any of the other H&Ks any day however.

The "SF" is a must, even if you have big hands IMO. I would press you to get it even more if you are used to a G17.

I had a HK45, and it is an improvement over the USP, but I found the interchangeable grip swells to have a little amount of movement. It is an improvement, but I don't think its worth $350 more than a Glock.

The G21 referred to by me as the “Polymer Brick” for its simply outstanding ergonomics. I own Glocks and I’m generally favorable in opinion of them but the G21 configuration I’m not that enthusiastic.

If it were I the S&W MP45 would be my selection

I used to think the same thing til I tried the SF model.

awesome info guys! just what i was looking for!
i can tell that theres a generally good opinion of the g21 especially the sf. i havent held the sf but i will take your reccomendations and see how it feels. question?? i assume the g21 sf and regular model use the same old g21 magazine correct?? also...what do people think the odds are of glock coming out with a g21 gen 4 anytime soon??

Its a nice gun,I don't think the grip is as enormous as everybody makes it out to be, but may I suggest checking out the S&W M&P45 before purchasing it? I'm a big glock fan, but that m&p is sweet, I plan to buy it as my first .45 handgun.

Regardless of what others say, when I shot the G21SF compared to the G22, I noticed that the 21SF (.45) had CONSIDERABLY lower recoil "pop" than the 22 (.40). It shoots very well and accurate for a .45 and also the fact that you can poop out 13+1 rounds where it eats...That's a LOT of firepower in .45! Get it if you can!

Decided against the HK or Sig?
So did I.
I ended up bidding on a Glock 20 10mm, had one years ago. The 21 is a solid gun. I like the 2ng gen Glocks like this one.

With glocks I stick to 9mm models exclusively. They are the most durable and problem free in this cal.

I''m kind of surprised the Glock guys haven't responded to this one. I'm not a Glock guy, but I don't think they are interchangeable.

Be aware, Glock has 3 or 4 different versions of the Glock 21SF.

There have been quite a few internet comments about problems with the models with the ambidextrous magazine release (the one on the right side). The picatinny rail version has this. I also find this one less comfortable in the hand, and in spite of my relatively small hands I would buy the regular 21 over the 21SF with ambi mag release.

The G21SF with the Glock rail and single side mag release is the one I would pick. I find it the most comfortable of the Glock 21 models and there haven't been any reported problems.

It is unclear what design Glock is going to stay with, or if they will continue to offer all the different versions.

I have a 21 SF....it's an excellent handling and shooting weapon...however get the one with the glock light rail that can use even the older G21 mags and is NOT a PITA to fit holster wise...I have the picatiny railed model...and that is my only complaint....wished I had the glock railed SF instead....I also owned an older 21....great gun but it was BIG....the SF model feels MUCH better! just remember...get the glock rail version! A 3.5# connector is a good call to IMHO

I like my 21SF - I find the recoil easier to control with it than the 1911. Yes, the 1911 is more accurate but dang 13+1 is nice. The accuracy of the 21 is just fine. I shoot mine at USPSA to shoot major and it is doing just fine. I did have trouble with Wolf primers not going bang but good primers work fine.

Whenever someone says "GLOCKs are great, but stick with 9mm," I wonder if I'm really that lucky. My G21SF is the most reliable and accurate (shooting unsupported) center-fire handgun I've ever owned. And I consider it the most ergonomic grip of all my pistols!! The only jam it ever had was when the slide couldn't close all the way, because the cartridge was deformed. I shoot this gun MUCH more accurately than a G19 or G26. My only handgun I can shoot better is a Ruger .22 target pistol.

I suspect that the non-9mm longevity concerns are due to the GLOCKs in .40 SW, and possibly the early slimline G36. But the 21/30 are based off of the 10mm G20/29 platforms. Most would agree that these models are durable (if not over-built) and reliable.

By most accounts, the G21 is one of the most accurate and soft-recoiling .45's made -for it's size and weight. I have med-large hands and, after reading negative reviews of the size and shape, expected the G21 to be awful in hand.

On the contrary, I found the original Gen 3 ergonomics to fit my hand perfectly. The dreaded hump fit my palm very....ergonomically....and, after shooting the G30 and loving the accuracy and ease of handling, can't wait to pick up a G21.

The extra size actually serves to center the first digit of my trigger finger perfectly on the trigger. That can only mean better accuracy and control.

It's definitely my next Glock purchase.
