I only recently bought a G26, so I can't comment on long term reliability. I previously owned a G19, and the Glock 9mm series reliability and simplicity were the primary factors in my decision to go with the G26. Since I am eventually going to get a G19 or G23 for a house gun, the similarity between manual of arms makes sense to me.
My girlfriend, OTOH, decided to go with a XD9 subcompact. It's a little fatter than the G26, but the trigger feels better (IMO, not as heavy or "spongy" as the G26). She prefers having the grip safety, and even with that the grip is slightly smaller and more comfortable for her. Combined with her wardrobe, she can't reasonably conceal the XD9 on her person; it has to go in her purse. The G26 would have been the same in that regard.
The G26 is right at the limit of what I'm comfortable trying to conceal under most of my clothing. It might even get left behind in favor of a Beretta 21A in the summer. I honestly would have preferred the Kahr MK9 to both G26/XD9 for summer carry but can't afford one right now.
I'd consider the XD9 4" model for a house gun, but given the choice I'd still rather have a G19.
