Okay, so i am looking for a good 9mm compact pistol, and have come up with the Glock 26 and the Springfield XD 9 3". Are there any reliability problems with either model? (i know, i am talking about two very reliable guns) Or long term problems?
Thanks.

I can only attest to the G26 - it has gone bang with everything I have tried - it is not as accurate as my G17 - shorter barrel and sight radius, (more the Indian, not the arrow I suspect), but it is easy to use, clean, and shoot

Can't comment on the XD. Never even held one. Got my G26 back when it was a new model. Love it. Like oneounceload, I also had a G17. But I shoot better with the G26 ( go figure ). I think the G26 is a bit thick in the grip ( for carry ). The XD might have it beat there.

I only recently bought a G26, so I can't comment on long term reliability. I previously owned a G19, and the Glock 9mm series reliability and simplicity were the primary factors in my decision to go with the G26. Since I am eventually going to get a G19 or G23 for a house gun, the similarity between manual of arms makes sense to me.

My girlfriend, OTOH, decided to go with a XD9 subcompact. It's a little fatter than the G26, but the trigger feels better (IMO, not as heavy or "spongy" as the G26). She prefers having the grip safety, and even with that the grip is slightly smaller and more comfortable for her. Combined with her wardrobe, she can't reasonably conceal the XD9 on her person; it has to go in her purse. The G26 would have been the same in that regard.

The G26 is right at the limit of what I'm comfortable trying to conceal under most of my clothing. It might even get left behind in favor of a Beretta 21A in the summer. I honestly would have preferred the Kahr MK9 to both G26/XD9 for summer carry but can't afford one right now.

I'd consider the XD9 4" model for a house gun, but given the choice I'd still rather have a G19.

i am a huge xd fan, i have a service model with over 11k rds through it, and i use to own a sa xd sub compact model with over 1500rds through it, they are both great guns and i have never had an issue with either one of them, as a matter of fact i plan on picking up another service model soon.

i am not a fan of mini glocks.

so the choice would be clear for me.

XD has the definite benefit of the grip safety in my book. Also, SA warranty and customer service are superb. Glock does have a better finish, though.
Still XD though. Just my opinion.

The Glock G26 has become my EDC. In fact, I intend to buy a second G26. Why? Will...just because I really like the G26, I carry it every day, and don't want to have to use a different firearm if it needs a substitute.
