Hello all,

My first post here. I've gotten a lot of useful information off of this, and other, quality forums, most recently as I made a decision to switch from a Ruger Sp101 2.25" barrel .357 to a Glock 26 for my everyday carry. Just wanted to post my initial impressions of this switch for others to use as a data point.

I carried the SP101 (in a Bianchi #1S IWB holster) for about three years, both concealed carry and as my woods gun. I really liked it in the appendix position, about 1:30, it fit nicely there, I could forget about it, and it was quite concealable. After a lot of thought, however, I decided that I was really limiting myself tactically by only carrying 5 rounds, thus the switch to the Glock 26. I chose the 26 as it was pretty much the smallest (particularly in grip heigth) of the common double-stacked subcompact autos and has a very proven record of reliability. Yes, the grip is not ideal, but I can get used to that. I placed more value on concealability and function over ergonomics.

After a few days of carrying the 26 (in a Fist #1K IWB Kydex) I am surprised at how much more concealable/comfortable it is than the SP101. I have a hard time getting it to print even in a light T-shirt. The Kydex elminated most of the leather squeak that the Bianchi leather holster produced. The one downside, so far, is that the 26's handle sits lower, closer, to my belt, than the SP101. The SP101 was just a bit easier to get a grip on the handle with my fingers.

I was very satisfied with the workmanship and functionality of the Bianchi holster and in pairing it with the SP101. So far, however, I am pleasantly surprised at how much thinner the 26 and the kydex holster are, by comparison.

Hope this helps someone considering a similiar decision.

You might want to try a Pearce grip extension (+0) to see if it helps you obtain a better grip. You may trade off a bit of concealment but it's worth it for me.

I can't speak for the SP-101, but my G26 conceals a little better than my J-Frame. My Kahr PM9 is the best, but it is capacity limited. I like the 10+1.

Thanks for the input. I bought a pearce extension with the pistol and have it on one of my 10 rnd mags. The difficulty in the draw isn't so much having enough handle for sufficient grip, it's the lack of clearance between the handle and my belt. I don't anticipate it being a problem, just need to practice the new muscle memory of the new draw.

The only real advantage of the small-frame revolver is its more streamlined and rounded contours (if you selected one with a concealed, shrouded or "bobbed" hammer) for carry in tighter spots like a pocket. Otherwise, I find a subcompact autoloading 9mm to be superior in every way. If you lay the two guns side by side - or one atop the other - they are practically the same size.

Sounds like you need to try a different holster. One with the capability to adjust the cant and height of the holster.

the sp101 is not the best choice in concealed revolvers. mostly due to weight and the frame being slightly larger than the j frame smiths. It is more comfortable to shoot however.

I don't see what is so concealable about any doublestack auto I've held onto the compact glocks and it seemed like a short fat stubby gun.
If I'm going to conceal a auto its going to be a Kahr pm9 or a PF9. To carry a G26 I'd just rather carry a G19 or a 1911.

I'm with toivo, I loved the GAP floorplates on the 27 I had. I think it is the one addition other than a smoothface trigger that all the baby Glocks really shine with.

Like "red-rick" said, you may want to look into an adjustable holster. Not tryin to start a this is better than that one type argument but I like my Crossbreed. It will allow you to adjust ride height and forward cant.

I used to CC a Ruger SP101 in .357mag loaded with .38 special JHPs back in 2005. I switched over to a G26 in 2006 and have been CCing it ever since. The G26 is considerably smaller and lighter compared to the SP101 IMHO.

I used to have a Ruger 101 but ended up selling it. Now I have a G26 and 442. My initial impressions for the Glock is positive; both for carrying and shooting.

The G26 is extremely versatile too...

For easiest carry, with 10-round magazine:

And if you need a place to for your pinky finger, and want a few more rounds, Pearce magazine extension (12 rounds):

And for nightstand duty, a 15-round G19 magazine with sleeve:

Different folks, different strokes. I personally don't care for carrying chunky autos either, and I've never been able to shoot them well anyway. I find it more comfortable and easy to carry 1911s and revolvers (plus I shoot them better), but that's just me.

Though I like the SP101 a great deal, for pocket carry it is too large and heavy (for me) and for belt carry (IWB), I do fine carrying larger guns like 1911s, S&W K and N Frames and Ruger Sixes.

Amen!

The J size .38 is best as a backup/hideout gun. And for that the airweights are indicated.

The SP101 is a very strudy gun but it is also very heavy. I have a Smith 640, .357 magnum, and it is in the same league as for weight.

And while I pack a Glock 27, I also usually have a backup, like my TCP .380 or a J airweight .38.

If I did pack a J .38 (or SP101) as primary, I'd pack a SECOND ONE as 5 shots is a might to thin a reed for me.

Let's not forget that the G26 shoots 9mm.......the SP101 anywhere from plink'n .38 to 200 gr. nuclear .357 mag loads. I have shot the G26 a lot, and it's a good gun......but give me my 3" SP101 any day of the week and twice on Sunday. I think it carries just as easily as a G26 with the right holster - in my case that would be a Simple Rugged Silver Dollar Pancake Holster. Nice to be able to carry .38 Spl +P around town and .357 Mag Buffalo Bore 180 gr. HC in the "woods".
Can't do that with a G26.........

i used to have a g27 and in a holster it might conceal better than a j frame but the small glocks are not pocket pistols where the j frame can be

Nice writeup guscoffey. I can't CCW, but as soon as i can I'm going to be ready! I have a J-frame and a 3" SP101, but I'd decided that my future carry gun will be a G26. I don't have the G26 yet, but I invested in a G26 "Blue Gun" to try out concealment and draws. The thickness of the G26 is a disadvantage for carry, but it also allows a good, two-handed grip on the gun. Even without a grip extension, I feel like the grip is just as secure as on a G19, which feels perfect in my hands. This is my main problem with the J-frame and SP101 - the small grip frames don't allow me to grip the guns as securely as guns with "full-size" grips, like the Glocks.

And if you want more power in a Glock 26 package JJE, just get the Glock 27 (.40 S&W) or Glock 33 (.357 Sig.)

Then they match the SP101 in all but Buffalo Bore ammo.

If you like fat grips, keep in mind that you can go much larger on the J and SP101 if you so desire.

Even though I have big hands, I tend to prefer/shoot better with somewhat thinner stocked guns, so no Glocks for me.

Are you sure?

I have my sp101 on the OWB holster right now.

Usually I carry it on a IWB synthetic holster apendix carry under a golf shirt all day without much trouble.

Even more, it is a 3 inch.
