Emergency question...

What position is the firing pin supposed to be when the gun is field stripped?
Is it normal for the firing pin to be protruding out of the firing pin hole?

The reason that I ask is that a small foreign object (gun oil cap) was accidentally lodged inside my gun as I was putting it together. (I have no idea how it got there! I know...stupid right?)

I only realized it after trying to put it together.

So.. after dry firing the gun (as it says in the manual...prior to field stipping it) and then field stripping it... I noticed that the firing pin is still in the "fire" position....meaning... it is protruding out of the hole. Now...I'm worried because part of me don't ever remember it being that way when I field strip the gun. (But my memory can be playing tricks on me...due to my stupid mistake. Now, I'm second guessing myself.)

Is this normal? Can anyone verify this for me. Thanks.

The striker should be protruding through the breech face after the gun is dry fired and then disassembled. Before reassembly it is a good policy to hold the slide with the bbl pointed up and press the safety plunger in,you will hear the firing pin(or striker whichever you prefer)fall back down. Then shake the slide, you should hear the firing pin move back and forth inside its channel. This tells you there is no foreign objects or debris in the channel and the striker is moving freely.
