Hey guys, my latest problem that I've come up with is having a glove box gun. I want to be able to just throw it in my glove box and I don't want to have to worry about it getting banged up. This would be for little errands as running into town for a little bit, or going out to grab some fast food if I don't feel like making anything. When I'm only going out for 10-20 mins, it is really a pain to holster up and possibly have to change clothes in the process. So instead of holstering up, I want to be able to grab this gun and throw it in the glove box when I'm leaving the house for a short amount of time. My carry gun is a full-size 1911, I'm looking for something smaller and more rugged. I'm not looking to spend very much, $400-500 MAX.

So far I'm looking at:

Ruger SP101 .357 mag

Glock 23 or something similar

Suggestions or insights?

I'd say with a glovebox gun your first consideration should be the finish. Someone on this board had massive issues with an otherwise good gun, just because of the finish and because of the fact that it was in a car.

The SP101 is a perfect choice. I opt for a stainless .38spl revolver myself. No mag to unseat, no chamber to worry about loading, harder to corrode, just ready to play.

I think either of those are too nice for a truck gun... IMO... Frankly, I like the Norinco L213... 9mm, cheap but also a cool gun with some history.

But, it I had a SP101 or a Glock I would consider them at the high end of my collection.

An inespensive revolver. I have a Rossi 351 5 shot .38 special. Interestingly it's actually manufactured by Taurus. It already has a few bare spots on the bluing on the cylinder. Not a great revolver, but, it works.

cz 82: high capacity, have a enameled painted on finish that won't rust or give you problems in the car, use cheap ammo, are more powerful than .380, ambidextrous, can be stored DA or condition 1 locked, etc. etc.
all for around $200. mags are expensive, but that won't be a problem for car carry.

Why not a pocket gun instead? Glove box gun is useless if you're not in the vehicle. I've taken to keeping my 629-2 3" in the car, but always have my P3AT or S&W M37 in a pocket if I'm not carrying something larger IWB.

+1.

I keep my P64 in the glove box of my work beater, in its pocket holster. Since I can't carry when inside the gates of my job it serves the secondary purpose of being able to be pocketed when I need to run errands on my way to or from work.

I've used a couple Rossi revolvers for glove box guns for years.

I have a number of S&W J Frames but I'd rather use the Rossi for jobs that might get the gun scratched.

Pocket gun would definitely be a good idea. Just throw an LCP in your pocket, then if you are just getting gas, or run quick into the store and something happens, your gun is not outside in your truck. If you want something bigger though, I would go Glock, their finishes are pretty durable and its gonna go bang everytime. Heck, with a Glock, instead of putting it in your glove box, you can chamber it and tie it to the hitch, and it will still be good to go when you get there.

How much good can a defensive gun carried in the glove box do you........really ?

If you're not actually in your car when you need it, you're never going to get to it.

If you drive up on something and think, "Hey, I might need my gun over there," then why not drive away and call 911 ?

If you're the victim of a carjacking, you still can't reach it in time to do anything about it.

I'm not a big fan of pocket guns, but I'd take a .380 in my pocket over a .45 in the glove box.

In my truck, its the SP101 but in the car,

I have the S&W model 65 with a 3" barrel. Some times I carry the SP101 IWB as well .

J&G sales has those Smith Model 64's for about 200 bucks.
Stainless finish, .38 4 inch barrel.
Sounds like an ideal glove box gun to me.

Used Stainless Revolver

I'd look at a used stainless revolver in either 357 or 38 special. You can pick one up used and not spend a lot of money....your choice smith, taurus, ruger. Stainless will cut down on rust problems as long as you do your problems with keeping it clean. Revolvers are good knocking around guns....no magazines to worry about rotating...simple...hard to tear up....also i'd look at a revolver with fixed sights...another part that will not mess up when thrown around VS adj sights.

My carry gun in public is a smith 642 Airweight 38 special. Stainless steel..fixed sights...hammerless. Not much to tear up or snag on anything.....The Rugers are I know pretty much indestructible..SP101 is a good gun and heavy.

Just make sure you dont leave it in the car overnight, what if it got broken into?

Its more trouble to keep up with a gun stowed in the car than it is to keep up with a gun stowed on your hip, or over your shoulder.

Not to mention, its not much use to you locked up in the glove box, when MS-13 comes at you with a machete at the stop-n-rob.

I really don't understand this whole "truck gun" concept.

The lingo has traction in the gun blogs, but in application, its a really stupid idea.
Like somehow its a gun you will abuse and neglect, but you will depend on in emergency.

Somebody's gonna have to explain that one to me.

I prefer a gun on me AND a car gun. There are times, especially pocket carry, where you absolutely cannot draw a carry gun while seated at the wheel. With two guns you have a "car jack" gun in the car, and a carry gun already on you when you hop out to go inside some establishment of some sort.

Anyway, back to the topic at hand, my car gun is a Glock 36 held in a car mounted holster in easy reach.

I didn't see where the OP is from, rust is hardly a problem in Colorado. Melting in the glove box, maybe.

Also, we don't know if he can CCW. So, all the advice about pocketed guns into the stop-n-rob may be off base. Frankly, if he can only have one in the glove box, I'd go with the biggest practical .45 or 10mm, or maybe .40, since it won't have to be concealed, he won't be carrying it on a belt all day, and won't have to dress around it. If I didn't have to worry about all that, heck, I'd carry a rifle. Or a shotty. 12ga says "you're about to have a bad experience" in a big way. Ooh! How about a Judge, with 00 buck and .45lc?

Remember...bring enough gun.

Jeff

If it's the OP's decision to have a glove box gun who am I to tell him otherwise?

I have a S&W 66 2 1/2" in my center consol as a just in case option.

Of the ones he mentioned I'd go for the Ruger SP101. Load it, stick it in the glove box and forget it. Just keep it seperate from your insurance card and registration in case of a traffic stop or whatever.

Also, make it your religion to lock your car each and every time you leave it and never park or leave it in a "questionable" area. Cars get broken into, s**t happens.

I am only trying to understand the concept, per my questions above. Maybe he can explain it, or maybe he hasn't really thought the concept thru.

Would I rather have a gun in the glove box over no gun at all? Of course, but it's a poor substitute for a gun carried on the body, but this is too inconvenient for the OP:
it is really a pain to holster up

I wish him well!

I would not simply toss a Glock loose in the glove box. I suggest a DA or DAO pistol or revolver, preferably stainless. The SP101 you mentioned is nearly perfect. I also would not recommend carrying your vehicle registration/insurance papers in the same compartment as a gun, as this would create an awkward moment in a LEO encounter. Move these to the sun visor or another compartment.

OK I’ll try

No, its right where I left it, on the seat with a towel over it in easy reach at all times.

Not to mention, its not much use to you locked up in the glove box, when MS-13 comes at you with a machete at the stop-n-rob.

No, if I’m in the store (standing) I can easily grab my 642 from my pocket. This is somewhat problematic sitting in my truck.

I really don't understand this whole "truck gun" concept.

Come on dude, it’s a gun kept in a truck, what’s to understand.

Who said anything about abuse? Mine is cleaned and lubed about every two or three weeks. The lube seems to disappear quicker than normal. Must be the Florida heat

Somebody's gonna have to explain that one to me

I have done my best.

Thankyou and Amen!!!
