im so excited. a gun range not too far from me is having an intro to firearms for teens class so i signed up for it. then my little sister (15) heard that i am going so she is coming too and since anyone under 18 has to have a parent with them my dad will be going for my sister. there will be 3 hours of classroom time then 3 hours on the range and we can stay long if we want. we are supposed to be shooting a .22 rifle, shotgun, .22 revolver, .22 autoloader, and some airsoft guns. the class is taught by volunteers and they are trying to get one instructor per person. nobody in my family has even seen a gun in real life let alone shot one so hopefully i can get them all hooked on shooting. the only thing im not looking forward to is getting up early tomorrow.

To really enjoy your shooting experience drop any preconceptions you have and just enjoy beginning at the beginning. Preconceptions divert your attention, clog up your ears, get in the way of reality and slow down the learning process.

Even as an "intelligent" non macho type, I managed to make every mistake possible. Six years and still learning to learn. Still unlearning what I "knew".

Enjoy. Give your family members individual attention and support so that they will be eager.

Good luck Buy Guns I hope everything goes well. Keep an open mind and try to pay attention to the safety talk.

I hope you have a great time on your first shooting outing and always remember to think SAFETY. Let us know how it goes and your impressions.

:D :D :D :D :D

In case no one has warned you , I will. It is addicting!

--Take ear plugs with you in addition to the muffs the range may provide. Don't go cheap on hearing protection.
--Safety glasses are essential.
--Wear a ball cap to deflect brass as it ejects.
--Wear high collar shirts. Particularly important for the female of the species.
--Wear close toe shoe. No sandles, flip flops, etc.

Have a great time. An after action report is expected.

thanks for the tips guys. hopefully i can remember to bring the camera so i can take pics.

my sister was looking at guns online and decided she wants a desert eagle and mack 10 :D.

Desert Eagle and Mac 10, Huh? Well, she has decent role models;

oops! i think that's a mini Uzi. oh well. Have fun shooting!

Your instructors will have a lot of good information for you, and will be getting just about as big a buzz out of the deal as you will. Sharing this with family members should make it extra enjoyable, as long as no one thinks they have to impress anyone else.

Master the safety aspect and you will have a pleasurable lifetime to work on accuracy, proficiency and procurement of interesting artifacts that shoot.

BuyGuns, please tell us where this precious event is to take place!!

I have not been able to shoot since I moved from Ft Laud! We are talking outside..........? Or Fowler St???

I have bought both my wife and daughter-in-law pistols, but they want to shoot outside!!

That sounds very exciting.

First and foremost, learn everything they teach you and pay attention. When getting into the shooting sport, SAFETY is key.

Take things slow, the .22s are fun to shoot, surprising that they're gonna bring in airsoft guns though.

Remember the 4 rules:

1) All guns are always loaded
2) Keep your finger off the trigger
3) know your target. Dont point the gun at anything you do not intend to destroy.
4) Know what is beyond the target and make sure a proper backstop applies.

And the extra rule:
5) Be sure to have fun! :)

EXACTLY.

I have a coworker who married a Japanese girl while she was in the US going to school. Her family lives in Japan and is here this week visiting.

Their biggest request?

To go shooting!

It's apparently quite difficult and expensive to shoot in Japan. These folks had never even SEEN a real gun before today. I was honored that my coworker asked me to take them all to the range. Even the coworker had never held a handgun before.

The interesting part was trying to explain the safety rules to them since they speak no English at all. They were the best "students" I've ever seen. Followed EVERY rule 100%; far better than any first time shoote I've encountered.

Unfortunately I didn't have a .22lr to start them with, so out came the Bersa .380. I took one shot at 25 feet to make sure things were ok (since I had cleaned it the night before) and wouldn't you know it....the only time in my life I put the first shot DEAD CENTER BULLSEYE.....must've been sorta' John Wayne'ish looking to them!

Then came the Ruger P95 9mm, and finally the CZ-40B .40 cal.

They took home a few empty casings of each caliber and a few targets as souveniers. And smiles. BIG smiles. I supplied the guns, all the ammo, targets, and even got them a big discount on the lane fees since I'm a member at the range. They INSISTED on replacing all of my ammo. I tried to tell them that it was way more expensive to buy it at the range (I usually do the WallyWorld value packs), but they insisted. Even wanted to take me to lunch.

Point is, we often take our liberties for granted. These people will never get to shoot handguns again (unless they vist their daughter and son in law again here in the U.S......in which case I'd be happy to have them out again!), and we can do it on a daily basis.....for now. Keep fighting the anti second amendment bigots before our nation ends up like England, Australia, Japan, etc.....

What Guy & the others say.

Remember, listen to the instructor and forget anything you "think" you've learned from watching TV, movies etc. It's entertainment and simultaneously, bovine feces.

You & sis have fun & stay safe!

its an outdoor range in punta gorda. membership for a year is i think 56 for a single person or 65 for a family. their site is http://swfsa.tripod.com and it helps to have a popup blocker when you go there. do you post on fl shooters network?

we all had a great time today. i knew it would be fun but not this fun. with the rifle i had one dead center with the rest in the black, my sister had a couple in the black and a few outside, and my dad had most in the center and first ring after the center. the targets we used for the two handguns were already used so i dont know exactly how i did but most of them were in the black. now all i have to do is get some cash together for a gun. here are some pics.

... :D ... :D ... :D ... :D ... :D ... :D ... :D ... :D

It's always good to see new shooters getting a proper start like this. heck - I'd volunteer my time & stuff for this. I already do it now & again for individuals I come across, but an organized event would be much better.

I'm particularly happy that your sister & dad came along. I imagine that it will be hard for a teacher or other talking head to convince her that guns are inherently bad after this experience, eh?

What are your thoughts on a first gun? Have you decided what you want yet?

What you've done here is going to cost you a lot of money in the future!!:D

This is good though, you'll get to:

1. Enjoy a fun hobby
2. Be better prepared to defend yourself
3. Create lasting memories
4. Excercise your rights

(And this is a very condensed list of benefits)

What did your other family members think of it?

im gonna get a .22 for all of us to use and learn with. not sure what kind though.

both my sister and dad loved it. i had suspected my dad to be more of a "what do you need a gun for?" person but he turned out to be quite the opposite. my mom is more pro now too. its only a matter of time before i get her to a range now.

If you're thinking handguns, there are few .22 pistols that are easier to shoot or more fun to shoot than the Ruger Mark II and 22/45 lines. I think the Walther P22 is a hoot too, but it's not quite as "smooth" as the others. If you really like the wheelguns, S&W, Taurus and Ruger have nice options for you.

(Personally, I have a hard time imagining a better choice than a stainless 22/45. It's easy to operate, cheap to feed - even with the premium Velocitor ammo mine is most accurate with, non-intimidating, not expensive to buy, covered by a great warranty, fun to shoot, and great to train others with. I think everyone should have one. Heck - I got my mother one to use and liked it so much I got another for myself!)

No matter what you do, try to find someone with one or more of these and go shooting. Feel is important.

One thing I will suggest... Try for Stainless Steel. Not only is it "prettier" to an average non-shooter, it is more resistant to corrosion than a standard blued gun. For something that's going to see lots of use, and the occasional bit of accidental neglect, I think it's a good move.
