Going to first IDPA match. Advice?

Just go to have fun, be safe and enjoy the experience. There will be all levels of shooters, some will be fast and others not. Don't worry about how anyone else is shooting. Just go through the stages with your focus on safety and getting good hits. Expect your mind to go blank when the timer buzzes, don't worry it happens to everyone in some form. My overall advice for your first time goes back to my first sentance. Have fun, be safe and enjoy the experience. Let us know how it goes.

Lots of good information at
http://www.gadpa.com/index.php/ipda/new-shooter-briefing/

Why learn the rules one penalty at a time when you can be prepared?

You must be able to load and holster the gun without sweeping yourself or others.
You must be able to draw the gun from under a concealment garment likewise and without gettting tangled up.
You must be able to reload likewise, keeping the finger out of the trigger guard.
You must be able to move safely with a loaded gun in hand, either shooting or not. If not, your trigger finger must be out of the guard.
You must make use of "cover" shooting standing or kneeling behind it and leaning out to shoot.

All of this stuff can be practiced dryfire without ever firing a shot.

Assuming its your first time in a match period:

  • Breathe.
  • Listen to the Safety Officer. Ask questions if anythings unclear.
  • Think about what you're doing and make your movements conscious ones.

When it comes to the shooting part:
  • Shoot accurately first, speed will come.
  • Keep it simple and shoot to slide lock, drop the empty mag and reload - the other legal reloads will probably confuse you and earn you procedural penalties.
  • Be very aware of your trigger finger and the muzzle direction - you don't want to earn a DQ 5 minutes into your first match.

Have fun, and let us know how it goes.
