Okay, I am going to be bringing the M1A Springfield scout I am buying home in a few weeks......

What are some good factory loads to try out.... for SHTF scenes and just plinking, getting rid of the pesky neighbors Just kidding

I don't have a reloader so thats out.....maybe next year.....:p

Has a 4x fixed scope on it now and will get a ACOG later for it, so it will have to stay under 100 yards for now.

Where is a good source for M1A mags?

44mag.com is where I bought my mags. I will be getting my Loaded soon. I got exited and bought some mags before the gun even came! As far as ammo I have no clue!:what:

Well I'll be beat about the head for suggesting it, but I bought some of the Taiwanese Type 57 M14 copy mags from Ammoman and all of them ran flawlessly. 16 bucks each.

As for ammo, good luck.

Good .308 today is .308 that is in stock.

Midway was having a sale on Winchester 308. Take off $100-150 for selling the spent brass, it is not a bad price for new factory ammo.

Ditto on the 44mags.com, great prices and good folks to deal with. I have 20+ T57s for range mags, they all seem to work just fine, but at $24 for new GI mags, tough to justify the $$ for T57s. Dan's has T57s for $75 for 5, shipping included http://www.dansammo.com/odds.asp He is a good guy to deal with and the mags look new in oily wrappers.

T-57's or USGI?

It's an easy decision. USGI. Checkmate Industries, (CMI) is the only current USGI manufacturer for M14 magazines. T-57's are good, but can be a "crapshoot". I had 10 of them which had to be totally stripped and refinished. They work great now, but can't hold a candle to my CMI's. Unless you're willing to buy em 500 at a time, the best place to get them is at, as mentioned above, 44mag.com - the price is right - the mags are the genuine article. Avoid at all costs "USGI Spec" or "functions like USGI" - you'll be disappointed.

As for ammo, surplus is still out there and deals can be had, but it's getting rare. As a rule, I steer clear of Indian 7.62x51, though I understand 70's manufacture, (produced by the Brits) is GTG. I got lucky and stumbled on nearly 3,000 rounds of 1969/1970 Lake City tucked away in a gun shop. I have also been shooting South African, Port and Aussie. That's pretty much dried up. Last weekend I tried out some Georgia Arms 150 ball and 168 Match. Good stuff...HTH...

Congrats on the Scout!

I really like all the old british empire stuff, plus American and Canadian. also i like the South African, good for basic/ and return to zero for me. what may really float your boat is to get a bunch of old S. american/ nazi stuff, such as veezuelen, chilean, argentinean, that stuff. Had some really great ragged hole groups with the Venezuelan.

44mag.com is the place for M1A/M14 mags.

Ammo....buy South African surplus if you can find it. I'm too poor to shoot any factory loaded stuff. Was able to pick up a case 1260rnds of SA for $450 at last weeks gun show. SA is getting really hard to find.

Hornady 155gr TAP. I keep a few Enblocs and FAL mags loaded.
