If you're willing to pay at least $600, the VZ-58 is held superior to the AK by many; it has a milled receiver, but it's about a pound lighter than a stamped Kalashnikov. If you're on a tighter budget, the Saiga rifles are imported from Russia in a neutered form, but they can be restored to pistol grip configuration relatively easily. They start at $330 or so, and I've seen pistol grip conversions done for as little as $80. Of course, there are also the Romanian WASR-10's; Century's drunk monkeys have a reputation for screwing them up, but they make decent shooters when in good shape.
Well said, I would put my VZ.58 up against any AK and expect it to come out on top every time. It is just as reliable (if not more so), significantly lighter (3lbs lighter than a AK-47, about 0.5lb lighter than an AKM), much more accurate, and most importantly it has great ergonomics (something that is dismal on the AK). The construction is also fantastic, and the trigger pretty darn good (likely due to being striker fired). I paid $585.00 from TGI and I am very happy with the purchase.
If your budget doesn't allow for the VZ.58 then a Saiga and conversion parts are the best option. I converted my Saiga-12 a couple of years back for about $450.00, but you can do the same with different components for about $100.00. The Saiga is the best AK pattern rifle made IMO.
If forced to choose anything other than the above, I would go with a WASR, it is inexpensive and they have been decent in my experience. They are not accurate, by any stretch, but will go bang and are "pattern" sufficiently to hit targets at 100yds or so.
Another decent option is the Ruger Mini-30, it is very well constructed, but expect accuracy similar to the Saiga at a price akin to the VZ.58. However it is a very nice handling rifle, weight is moderate, and sights are good (better than the potential accuracy IME). There are much worse options. If you should decide on the mini, just remember that you need to stick to OEM magazines for proper operation (they aren't the cheapest, but are now available in 20rnd configuration).
Additionally there is the SKS. A fine rifle, but with the recent increase in cost, the internal magazine (or iffy AK mag. conversion), and awkward handling characteristics, I find it to be a poor choice at this time. However it is still worth mention, as you may disagree with my assessment.
