Hi all looking for a good all-around reload for 45 Long Colt to be used in Uberti 45 and you Uberti 1860 Henry will welcome any suggestions or something that will perform good and keep the pressures were they need to be for that old action.

If you use the "standard" 250-255 grain lead bullet load in your Colt-clone, it is most likely that you won't encounter issues with sights being too short/tall, assuming you've got a fixed sight model Uberti. 7.5 - 8.0 grains of Unique will get you there

This use is what Trail Boss was designed for. All you have to do is find some.

As mentioned Unique, also Bullseye, W231, AA#2, Red Dot. A lot will depend on what powders are available.

Any SAAMI compliant load will be safe in both actions. Stick to published load data for standard .45 Colt loads and you will be fine.

Personally I like using either W231 or HS-6 for all my .45 Colt ammo. (mostly HS-6 these days)

6.0 grains of Red Dot under a 230 LRN gives me an average of 718 fps from my Smith 460 XVR. It is a little dirty and smokey sometimes. 7.3 grains of win 231/hp-38 was just a tad faster and probably cleaner. Trail boss makes for some really slow loads. These are standard 45lc power loads. If I want hot loads I just switch to the big brass. Trail boss is a bit more expensive than the pistol powders. hp-38 is my go to powder, but I also have a big supply of red dot to use up, so I run it when I can.

I mostly shoot the standard 255 grain SWC with 8.5 grains of Unique. My Blackhawk loves them, and trust me, a 255 grain bullet going 900+ fps will kill anything in the lower 48 without an issue.

I've used the following powders in my Uberti SAA. Trailboss, Black Powder, Unique, HP-38 and Universal with all fairly good results behind both 200 and 250 gr L-RNFP bullets. They also work well in my 45 Colt Rossi 92.

250-255 Keith LSWC + 8.5 Unique is my goto load for Colts & clones.

It shoots to the sights with every gun I have shot it in.

Just stick with the data for standard 45 LC actions, not Ruger / Contender, and you'll be in the safe zone. I've used HS6 for this before with really good performance.

As for being SAAMI compliant loads, SAAMI doesn't approve load data, they standardize cartridge and chamber specifications.

45 colt loads

With 6 different .45c guns in the extended family & me the only handloader, we have tried many different loads/bullets. The one that works best for us in all 6, bbls from 4 5/8" to 24", is 250g missouri bullet rnfp (Cowboy #1) over 7.8g Unique and WLP. Fps gain from shortest bbl to longest is about 200 fps.
Accuracy is very good from all and is a standard pressure load.
Enjoy gary

And pressures which was exactly what I was talking about.
No one said anything about SAAMI approving load data, really??
I'll stop now so I don't say something I usually wouldn't!

This question might be better answered in the BP forum.

There are 1860 BP shooters who hang out there that probably never read the reloading forum questions.

Myself?

All I know is a modern Italian Henry reproduction is pressure tested for modern SAAMI pressure ammo.

I do know this much however.
The Henry rifle was never intended to use a round ball.
It is rifled for conical bullets of whatever caliber, that will feed from the magazine.

And round balls in any caliber won't.
