Hey guys - I've been hungry for a precision rifle and I'm curious if this is a good deal:

Police trade in Rem 700PSS 26" barrel 308 with detach mag

Leupold Vari X III 3.5x10 high turrets

Harris Bipod

Pelican Case

$900

It doesn't come with a log book though so I have no clue how many rounds have been through it, it could have a shot out barrel for all I know.

Check the barrel of course, but the only problem I see with this is it's not a face-to-face transaction.

So for it.

Didn't some 700s have problems with the detachable mags falling out when fired?

I'd do a pull and wiggle test on the mag before I bought it.

What type of scope mounts?

$900 sounds like a good price if it isn't beat up.

Local dealer got some of those as nuke plant security surplus (Wonder what they were going to?) and they sold like hotcakes at that price and higher. One owner told me of amazing accuracy.

Remaining barrel accuracy life is the big question but some of those outfits don't practice much.

Mounts are unknown. I'd probably replace with Larue mounts and put a Doktor backup on it

I've read complaints about 700 DM rifles here and at TFL...not sure if that was one of them. I have a 700 LTR DM and the only problem I've ever had with it is that the magazine is relatively easy to insert incorrectly, which will cause the front of the magazine not to latch, and also result in feeding problems. There are two fixes. First, make sure you insert the front of the mag first (mag goes into well at a slight upward angle) and hear two sets of clicks. Second alternative: don't remove the magazine. I haven't felt the need - I load from the top as if it were an ADL or BDL model.

I'd say it's a really good price. The pelican case goes for 100+, bipod for 50+, and the scope for 350+. At that point, without considering the rings and base, you are looking at a $400 PSS. I doubt that they have shot out the barrel, but even if they have you can rebarrel and still not have a bad deal.

police departments operate on a budget. they buy new stuff to replace old worn out stuff. they don't buy new stuff just because they've got money to burn.

i'd be skeptical.

If you know that you might have to replace the barrel, and that doesn't bother you, then buy it. It has probably been shot a great deal. My buddy is a sniper for a PD outside Dallas, and they shoot a rifle until it is worn out, then trade it. Can't imagine any PD trading a SWAT rifle that still had plenty of life left in it.

How much $$$ is the guy looking at to replace the barrel with of at least equal accuracy + installation?

Assuming the rifle might need it.

I just saw one on Gunbroker in .308 brand new for about $775. Of course, the Leupold VX3 is worth a lot. Bipods and cases are cheap.

About $600-$650. Half that price is for the barrel, and the other half is for truing your action, chambering, and installation. If you're installing a new barrel, spend the few extra bucks and get the action trued.
