Here I go again.

Looking for recommendations for good gun shops in the Fresno area, the Palm Springs area, and anywhere north of Stockton. Just trying to fill out the map.

Replies much appreciated.

John McCormics Guns and Ammo. John's been in the business for more years than i can count. He loves the business and is very knowledgeable. He'll deal on his guns. He sells for 20% over his cost.

Gilman & Mayfields. Just stay away from the short fat guy. He can be a real butt hole at times. Prices are so so.

Herb Bauers. STAY AWAY!!!!STAY FAR AWAY!!!!Their guns are WAY over priced.

Fresno Firearms. Same as above except the owner is a very big butt hole.

Tac Supply. Doesn't have much in stock (most of his clientele are cops) but he'll order a gun for his cost plus 20%.

I agree with what MAgsnubby said,
McCormicks is a good place if you talk to John. that guy knows what hes talking about.
Ed over at Fresno firearms is an "interesting" person. Ive gone in their before asking prices on a couple handguns. His reply? "Why? are you gonna buy today? The price is only good for today" Needless to say I walked right out.
Herb Bauers is a joke. Way overpriced and some of their guys aer snobby if you dont like what they want you to like. But they have a really good stock on hand. Look there and buy somewhere else.
Tac Supply I've had good luck with. Matt did me really good on a couple handguns there in the past year. Way cheaper than anywhere else. But he doesnt really have anything in the store, orders everything. (And he has an airsoft room in the store)
I'm the Outdoors Manager over at the Sports Authority(east of blackstone, not the old Sportmart)
We dont deal handguns anymore but if you need anything in longarms come on by
Or if anyone just wants to come in a shoot the bull for awhile. Im always lookin to meet other gun guys

Didn't realize there were so many folks here from Fresno. I spent a number of years there and still have friends I keep in touch with who live in the Central Valley.

John McCormick is a great guy but he squeezes every dollar out of sale. Can't blame him. I bought my first handgun from John in 1970 (oh my!) when he was a salesman at Herb Bauer's. John's wife passed about 2 years ago and I heard he was thinking of moving mack to Arkansas where he grew up.

Gilman-Mayfield (Bob Gilman and Bill Mayfield) are very knowledgable. They don't keep a large inventory, however. Last time I was in the shop I was disappointed when I realized that I have more guns than they have on display.

I bought my first gun from Herb Bauer's in 1967 (oh my!). Herb was always the biggest gun dealer but he did jack the retail on everything. But, if you wanted to actually handle a particular gun, he had it in stock. Herb died a couple years ago and his brother, Reggie, took over the business.

In the 1970s Bob and Bill were also working at Bauers. Bob was a salesman (sold me my first Colt 1911 in 1973 for $135 retail) and Bill was the resident gunsmith. When McCormick left Bauer's and opened his own shop Bob and Bill went with him and ran the gunsmith operation from that location. After a few years they split and opened their own store.

Can't comment on the other places mentioned as they came long after my time in Fresno, but I can recommend dropping in on John McCormick and Gilman-Mayfield.

Wow, this has been quite a trip down memory lane for me.

Thanks for the replies. I called John McCormick, and emailed him some information about my site. I have a feeling that he won't go for it, though.

Aren't there any good shops north of Stockton?

For price and a pretty good selection of new guns, Wild Sports in Orangevalle (east of Sac)

For a good selection of news guns at slightly high prices, The Gun Room in Elk Grove (South of Sac on 99). Nice indoor range too.

Great Guns (might be Great Outdoors) near 80 and Watt (Sac) has some good stuff too. Cheapest ammo around if you shoot the common calibers.

Other than that, you are pretty limited around here (Sac area) Everything else has either such high prices, or a craptastic selection. I usually buy my stuff from a local internet dealer. JB firearms. Good prices and selection of new stuff, if you can handle the shipping and paperwork delays.

If you get up here to Oroville, be sure to drop in at my favorite local baitshop, Huntington's Sportsman's Store on OroDam Blvd just east of Hwy 70.
(Closed Sundays)
It isn't Cabalas, but they have a small museum, a bunch of good guns and most any loading stuff you might want.
Cheers from Darkest California,
Ross
And oh, yes, they will pick you up at the airport if you wish.

Monkeyleg offers a service called Gunshop Finders. For $10/month, a gunshop can be listed with him. Click on the link in his post to see.

More West of Stockton is Canyon Sports in Martinez, CA. Great place. Ron's as cool as they come.

A place to avoid is Old West Gunroom in El Cerrito, CA. That guy has been there forever and has been a super prick for even longer. I am absolutely amazed that he stays in business. I know he has lost out on many thousands of dollars of business from people I personally know, as well as from myself.
