okay, went to gander mtn, here is what i saw in the used case.

one sig 225/p6 one mag, some scratches and bluing wear. fit my hand pretty well, but the trigger in da was mush, and single action was not even near crisp. they wanted 350 plus tax.

one walther p38 1 mag well worn 299

six walther p1's. 2 mags and holster, 299

offhand, although it was a bit bulky for carry, i liked the sig design and controls, but i preferred the blade sight on the walthers, maybe because i am used to a blade sight.

Go with a Hi Point C9. Made in America, and holds 7 +1. They're extremely cheap. I got a used one for $100 and it has actually exceeded my expectations. I bought it to abuse at the range, and have yet to experience a failure. I think it is a fluke because I've heard so many bad things about these pistols. For the price I paid, I'm liking mine more and more every time it chews through a full magazine. Accurate enough too.

There is a problem. We can list all kinds of pro and cons about these pistols, but they all do the job well.

We who are providing guidance are not you. Trying to cover all the pros, cons, objective, and subjective material is not going to help since we can not know which will and will not work exclusively for you. Try and handle or fire as many types presented here as you can.

Moral, common sense, and ethical reasons say the gun has to fit you and that you will become proficient with it.

For instance, I have short stubby fingers. The Kahr K9 and S&W 908, new, guns were out of my price range. I went with a Makarov.

This is in part why I like revolvers. Easy to find or change grips to make sure they fit. Can be done with some pistol makes and models, but not all.

Ruger P series P95s and P97 pistols fit me though they are supposed to be to blocky. Couldn't get the other double stack pistols to give a proper fit. Not at the time.

Wanted somthing for CCW carry this state was supposed to get. Only the Taurus PT111 fit me. The others were too much of a compromise in feel or fit.

Just one of those things, personal choice, and personal fit.
There is enough difference in the regular 9mm. , 9x18, and the .380ACP to consider. What's your tolerance and ability to handle recoil? With any of these pistols learned techniques can take care of that, but that has to be considered.

Maybe the Bersa in .380 is all you need or want.

The 3.5 inch barreled pistols such as the S&W and Kahr K9 split the ballisitic difference between the compact hideaways and the full service pistols. These do it better than the shorty 3in. barreled ones. Not by much, but the advantage is there.

Pistol barrels are measured in such a way that part of the cartridge is in the area that is included in the barrel measurement. This means there isn't 3 inches of actual barrel for the bullet to travel down to get velocity or leave the barrel.

Slightly over 2 inches or less. Less actual barrel. Less actual ballistics. Less need for reliance on a +P cartridges, if actually needed to begin with.

There youhave it.:)

there is a lot of good info here. it may take me a while to locate a pistol at the right price as i don't have a large selection of gun shops around here. i would also like to handle as many as i can to check ergonomics, trigger feel etc.

thanks for the input.

i finally found one that met my requirements. one of the local gun shops (40 min away) had a somewhat used (about 90-95% overall, with the major condition issue being some light pitting on the left side of the slide) 39-2. after some talking it was able to come home with me for $300 plus tax. he also included a one year parts and labor warranty . after adding two boxes of ammo, and a like new uncle mikes mirage holster, it was $365 out the door. maybe not the best deal, but the gun just felt right!

thanks again for all your input, i'll let you know how the first range trip goes.

i took the 39-2 to the range today. it is very comfortable to shoot. i need to work on the accuracy though. my groups at 50' are about 12" (free standing strong hand only). the rear sight has a slightly wider slot than i have been using, and i need to get used to the trigger. hopefully i can cut those groups in half with some practice.

Enjoy. You did alot of looking G2.

yea, and i was disappointed with a number of guns that i thought would work well until i handled them. particularly the smith 3953 (which is simalar to the 3913 i believe). i had thought from the beginning THAT was the gun to buy, but when i found one to hold it just didn't fit my hand. it pays to look around.

sorry no pics at this time.

If you can slide on the 9mm, i'd get a Makarov in 9x18mm or i'd get a CZ-52 in 7.62x25mm. Both are less than 300, for a little over 300, then you can get a Sig P225. Good luck
