I'm looking to buy a fair amount of self-defense ammo, and looking around I realize that besides your regular golden sabers, gold dots, etc. I don't know what's a good round. Anybody know of any good deals online right now on a decent round (not looking for $1 a shot)?

If you want decent and at a good price I recommend the Winchester white box 147gr or 124gr JHP. They seem to perform just fine and they are at a very reasonable price. They also use low flash powder and a quality HP. I wouldn't feel bad at all about carrying it. One of the best deals going on defense ammo is the Federal 9BPLE which can be found in bulk at great prices.

You can get Federal Law Enforcement surplus 115gr JHP 9mm +P+ for around $15 a box of 50 or if the +P+ scares you you can get Federal Hi-Shock 115gr or 147gr(conventional HP standard pressure ammo for about the same. Surplus LE ammo is probably the best buy for premium defense ammo in a per round cost.

Fiocchi makes a potent European standard velocity 1,280 fps 115r JHP that runs just under $15 a box and 147gr ammo that's just over 1,000 fps. They're currently loading Hornady XTP bullets at a lower velocity for more money but the bullet is one of the best.

My gun handles +p just fine, but I've never tried any +P+ in it. Would I want to get some better springs or anything?

My favorite 9mm hollowpoint, regardless of price, is Federal's HST, specifically the 147gr. +P load.

Lucky for me, they're quite affordable too. About $18/50 at ammunitiontogo.com.

You can get the Federal Hi-Shok and the +p+ 9BPLE at ammunition to go for $15.95 a box/50. This is a great buy and I purchased 250 rounds of each a while back and had it at my door within five days.

i want to cosign Kind of Blued on the federal HST.

I also just ordered some HST 147 grain 9mm +p, and some 45acp 230grain +p from Ammunitiontogo.com over the weekend.

The best 9mm ammo right now would likely be:

9 mm:
Barnes XPB 105 & 115gr JHP (copper bullet)
Federal Tactical Bonded 124gr+P JHP (LE9T1)
Speer Gold Dot 124gr+P JHP
Winchester Ranger Talon 124gr+P JHP (RA9124TP)
Winchester Partition Gold 124gr JHP (RA91P)
Winchester Ranger Talon 127gr+P+ JHP (RA9TA)
Federal Tactical Bonded 135gr+P JHP (LE9T5)
Federal HST 147gr JHP (P9HST2)
Remington Golden Saber 147gr JHP (GS9MMC)
Speer Gold Dot 147gr JHP
Winchester Ranger Talon 147gr JHP (RA9T)
Winchester Ranger Bonded 147gr JHP (RA9B/Q4364) FBI Load

All of them have passed thorough FBI protocol testing. If you don't see a particular load on the list, then it probably didn't pass the testing. My favorite is the Federal Tactical Bonded 135gr+P.

Here's a good source for most of the ammo here:

+1 for ammunitiontogo.com (no www. in front)

As for the +P+ 9BPLE stuff, its labeled as +P+ but as far as reported pressures, its only at +P level of 38.5k PSI.

If you want decent and at a good price I recommend the Winchester white box 147gr or 124gr JHP.
+1 on the 147gr. It's accurate and reliable. Never had a problem in my Glock 19. Box O' Truth says it tests very well, both for penetration and expansion. I have it in all of my 9x19mm guns.

And at Walmart, it's VERY reasonably priced compared to other personal defense ammunition.

I thought it generally ran $16-17 a box of 50? That's about the same price as the Federal HST from ammunitiontogo. Now, there is shipping added if you buy online, but there's also sales tax if you buy in the store.

If your comparing only to Federal HST. Most other premium JHPs are running more like a buck a round or more.

FYI - Double Tap offers 9mm Luger +P
in 115 gr., 124 gr. & 147 gr. with Speer Gold
DOt JHPs, $27.95/50 rds
and 500 rds @ $259.95

1,000 rds in an order and free shipping.

I ordered a box of the above in 147 gr.
since it's 1,135 FPS, as well as some .38 Special
+ P x 2 as a friend also wanted to try
the same stuff and I also got a box of .45
ACP. Ordered 8:30AM Monday Utah to SE
Washinton STate it was here Wednesday afternoon
$11.29 shipping.

I use the Win WB JHPs in 9MM for range/backup HD
ammo.

Cabela's had Speer Gold Dot bulk ammo for a really great price a few weeks ago in their bargain section. It was ammo that was sold as practice use only due to a slight variation from quality or something.

500 rounds for $165 in a plastic ammo can. Can't find the link right now. They had free shipping on orders over $150, too. That's what, 33 cents a round?

I've been going to my local gun show and picking up Wolf brand 9mm Luger for $9.00 bx. i haven't purchased any online because they are more expensive and you have shipping involved.

Also the local MC Sports has been running sales on ammo. I purchased some Fiocchi 9mm for 10.50 bx and some other brand (I forgot the name but it used a steel case instead of brass) for 8.99 bx.

I hope this info helps.

Winchest 115 grain Silver tip. Premium ammo, good ammo isn't quite as expensive as some of the others.

I bought Remington 115 JHP for $23/100 box at Wal-Mart. I don't know how good those are but I read they expand reliably.
