Good deals on Spyderco.

I saw the Blade HQ sale after posting about the sale at Knives Ship Free. With both retailers offering significant discounts at the same time it leads me to believe something is up at Spyderco. They are moving out old stock at a discount to introduce something new would be my guess. www.smkw.com is showing 30% off Spyderco too.

Considering almost everything except gasoline has gone up in the last 2 years I didn't feel Spyderco knives price increases were excessive. Benchmade no longer makes anything that I feel justifies the price. Good knives, but they have priced themselves over my budget.

Maybe they are just trying to move unsold stock, but IME when companies discount things this heavily they are planning changes. Leupold discounted the VX-1 and VX-2 heavily right before discontinuing both of them and replaced them with the VX-Freedom.

I prefer Brooks running shoes. Right before Father's day the street runners, (Adrenaline 22) and their trail runners,(Cascadia 16) were selling for around $100. Normal price was $140, they advertised it as a "Father's Day Sale". Right after July 4th, they introduced the updated Adrenaline 23 and Cascadia 17 at the regular price.

My feelings EXACTLY

Truth is the quality of knives coming out of China (yep…may my lips fall off…) and Taiwan puts a lot of pressure on these guys. Wasn’t long ago you could get a handmade custom for around what they are asking for many models. Just too hard for me to justify it on my salary.

Interestingly enough, it has caused me to consider brands I never really considered like Buck and Kershaw.

If it were a few select models I would agree but it appears their entire catalog is being discounted.

Great deals on some great knives. Spyderco is upgrading steel on some products from CPM S30V to CPM S45VN. Keyboard commandos can split those hairs, but everyday pocket knife users just saved some dollars. There's also quite a few K390 steel models, so I guess those didn't sell well. A good amount of salt series knives, which is a pretty specific application. There's a ton of VG-10 knives, so maybe those models will get a steel upgrade. Sales always seem to include premium steel knives with small blade lengths. And as expected, everyone's been trying to sell the Spyderco "Pochi" dog knife for years.

That would be reasonable if only one company was discounting, but if you look at the other knife sale items it appears that the knife companies are jumping into the "Christmas in July/Prime Days" phenomena while people are being motivated to turn money loose. Decades ago knife and gun sales would bottom out right after Father's Day and stayed in a slump until hunting season then peaking for Christmas consumption. Now the internet marketing and the barrage of summer sales designed to get people buying instead of playing outdoors puts people into the buying mood and companies don't have to "hibernate" through the summer.

I waited too long and SMKW sold out of what I was looking at but I ended up grabbing what I really wanted as an out of stock back order OK from Knifecenter. Now I’m just hoping it shows up by October.

Motivated by this sale, I scoured the local ads and I picked up a couple Spydercos second hand locally for really discounted prices.
