I love my mini-14. It is cut down to 16 inch including blind pinned compensator. and it sits in the buttler creek folder. it is the old pencil thin barrel but with its short barrel setup i grately reduced barrel whip thus reducing flyers. That being said I am in the market to build my own ar15 now and also want a ak47 and ak74.

This looks like a decent set up

Doxiedad, this looks like a pretty decent setup for under a grand. This is just an example to show you that there are plenty of options out there:

Here's your S&W Optics Ready AR - $799

Magpul MBUS back up iron sights front and rear set - ~$90

Primary Arms M3 Style Red Dot w/high mount - $79

You're in for under a grand minus shipping.

I agree seanie. If you are set on getting a S&W those are the accessories I would choose. Personally I would go with a Colt rifle.

I cant blame you at all, the Colt will definitely hold value better. Some times it's good to start middle of the road and upgrade though.

Well, I usually try not be the annoying guy who suggests something totally different than what the OP asked for, but since you're still hemming and hawing 4 pages later, I will throw this in.

Did you consider a Politically Correct Assault Rifle, as touted by John Taffin? It is a lever action rifle. 30-30, 45/70, 44 Magnum, 357 Magnum. In addition to being suitable for big game, they're also great looking, easy-handling, and historic. Not that this matters yet, but they probably would be the last rifle to be targeted by the gun-grabbers in government.

Actually, now that I typed that, I realized it would be a good reason to buy the AR now and the lever-action later, hehehe.

Magpul's website says that their MBUS front sight can not be mounted on a gas block front rail due to heat. I found the M&P15A on CDNN for $869.

Question about that primary arms m3, It says to use on an AR15 to use the high mount. Will that allow me to look below the scope to use the iron sights if needed?

I think the folks who always suggest building your first AR just to save a hundred bucks often forget how much they have in the tools necessary to build one. Build one if you wanna build one, buy one if you wanna buy one. At least it will have a warranty.

The high mount is just so you can get a proper cheek weld. If you need the iron sights, it's best to remove the optic. Unless you go for the current buzzword among "tactical" circles, co-witnessing.

I disagree with the notion that you can build a better rifle for less than the price you are looking at for a SW. You may be able to build one with more gizmo's but to come out cheaper you will have to buy the lower quality parts out there. For weekend plinking this probably doenst matter but i'm of the belief that paying a little extra for quality is always better in the long run which is why i say go with Colt. I also don't agree with buying a cheaper "first" gun or optics. Paying for low end, selling it for a loss and then buying what you really wanted is more expensive than just buying it the first time. I've learned both of these lessons the hard way.

With the Primary Arms optic with high mount you can look through the optic and see your iron sights. You can most likely get the red dot to cowitness with your iron sights. That is why you need a high mount.
Too bad you couldn't get the Magpul front sight to work on that gun. I guess other front sights are much more expensive.

Thank you for not referring to them as "assault rifles" ,, My first was a bushmaster XM-15,, 16" barrell i dropped a nikon 3x9-50 on top of it and it was a perfect 200-yard coyote-gun !! The thing still runs as smooth as a old viking sewing machine, but i seem to have gravitated back to the bolt-guns.(currently using a rem-700 .243 VTR) i am looking to drop a red-dot sight unto it and maybe practice some 'urban assault tactics' but it just dosent flip my switch anymore, am more interested in .22 LR conversion kit so i can teach my 13-yr old some run-n-gun games, he LOVES to shoot it as it is (.223) but cant seem to justify cost versus "fun factor",,, now that i think about it i'd better run an-oil-soaked patch thru it and lube - up bolt ,, it's been standing in back of gun-cabinet for months now un-touched

Ordered my rifle today :)

Went with a S&W M&P15A. I like the fold down troy battle sights on the rear. I also want to thank those who suggested CDNN. Got it for $870 shipped with 10 20 round mags.

My local gun shop has the same rifle for $1250 plus tax. I don't mind spending a little more to support local gun shop, but $400 is too much.

You made the right choice. My cousin has a S&W M&P AR (Alphabet soup anyone?) and its a great rifle. Accurate, reliable (with quality ammo) and very sturdy.

Some folks like Ak's, others have Mini 14 (I have a Mini), but if I were getting a new rifle, it would be an AR15. For what you get with an AR, they are pretty damn cheap...its a lot of gun for the money.

Good luck with your M&P, I think you will be pleased.

Love my S&W M&P15 MOE (more alphabet soup, anyone?). You'd be hard pressed to find a better AR-type rifle for under $1k.

Glad to see you got the rifle you want. If you are looking for a decent optic that will not break the bank take a look at the Nikon M223 series. I run the 1-4x on my AR and find it to be a very good scope for the money. My only gripe is the small objective does not offer the widest field of view.

I'm loving the rifle so far. Haven't had a chance to put many rounds through it yet though. Working on stocking up on ammo and learning to shoot the irons before I put an optic on it.

Thanks to everyone for their advice and input :)

One of my first rifles was a SKS then i got an AK i customized it made it all tacticool loved that rifle i call this my eastern block phase. I said i had no use for a AR. Then one day for no reason i got an AR and have never looked back. I love these rifles and have owned many since, there are some types not so good but all rifles are that way if you do your home work buy with confidence.
